OESTREICHER History of the Exeter District Co-Operative Manager: J. A. PETRIE Secretary: KENNETH HERN Treasurer: WM. B. TAYLOR When speaking of Exeter District Co-Op, we must keep foremost in mind those who made this adventure and project a possibility — the pioneers, the provisional directors. To these people a large share of the credit belongs. These people gave unstintingly of their time money and ability to promote organization, to achieve and make possible that vision looked upon by many to be an impossibility but today has materialized into a business of magnitude in reality. Special tribute is due to these pro visional directors —- John Quinlivan, Edward Chambers, Cecil Rowe, Ron ald Williams, Percy Passmore, Edward Kraft and the president, William Oestreicher, and those chosen as directors later during the period the mill was built, such as Wellington Brock, Harold Rowe, Asa Penhale, Edgar Montieth. The idea of this Co-Operative sprang up in the farm forum dis cussions .sponsored by the Stephen Unit Federaton of Agriculture. The president of this Stephen Unit, now the president of the Co-Operative, met with the directors of this Stephen Unit to plan ways and means and, on motion of John Quinlivan and seconded by Ed Chambers, a joint meeting with the Usborne Unit was called and at this meeting the decision for a Co-Op was unanimously approved, the provisional directors chosen and a charter applied for. This was in September, 1944. After obtaining the charter, business operations were commenced on a three-day basis in the same building just renovated, with Percy Passmore selected to act as manager. Soon the business grew to a full time business and George Tay lor was appointed as manager. Progress continued . . . Almost immediately it became apparent that the need of a feed service mill was a necessity to serve the growing demand for these prepared feeds. BUILDING OF FEED MILL This was in the spring of 1946 at a meeting of the membership when the decision was made to build a modern feed mill and mixing station. It took courage, patience and determination. The directors and management in charge got busy on a canvass for funds and, in spite of many disadvan tages and the odds against us in securing building materials, a most back ward spring, and almost cropless year, today Exeter District Co-Op is en joying one of the most up-to-date modernly equipped feed servicing plants in Western Ontario. It not only serves the membership, but the whole countryside. This summer in July* the building known as the Opera House Block —in which the uptown business was conducted since its origin—became the possession of the Co-Op and immediately rebuilding and renovating com menced. Today it is one of the attractive business set-ups in Exeter. We, the Co-Op membership, management and directors, most heartily invite everyone to see our new store ... to enjoy its services. Our aim is to give you, the town and community, the best possible Service* Vice-President: OSCAR TCCKEY Director: ALBERT GAISER Director: EDWARD CHAMBERS Director: EDGAR MONTIETH The Story of Directors OSCAR MILLER For the past few years Exeter District Co-Operative has carried on the business of handling farm Supplies and a few items of electrical ap pliances. This business wad done in a store which Was extremely run down and in bad need of repair* Because the Co-Op did not own the building it Was practically helpless as far as remodeling Was concerned. In July of this year, the building Was purchased from Mr* Glen McKnight of Exeter and, on August 11, the job of remodeling was commenced. Today We are proud to Welcome you into our new store, whoever you may be* The interior of the store is now a thing of beauty, to which the credit may go to Messrs. Ford and Farquhar, two young men starting up in the building line, and who have proven themselves by the beautiful job they did on our store. Modern office space, long streamlined Counters and bright built-in display shelving on which will be displayed all classes of hardware, electrical appliances, and perhaps household utensils, as well as radios, refrigerators, deep freezes, washing machines and Other special* ties too numerous to mention.
