HOWARD FERGUSON, MANAGER Phone Last Weeks Question There are baserunners on first and second base, the hatter hits a long fair fly ball, .the left fielder and the centre fielder start running for it, collide and are both knocked Should the .umpire call moment they collide rendered unconscious? Answer This answer comes unconscious- time the and are u n d e r Suspension of Play, apd while it may seem inhuman, it was writ ten for a very good reason, namely —- to stop players from feigning injury. So tiihe could not be called until the ball is re turned to the infield and held by the pitcher, on the rubber. Well here we are on the home stretch of our league and now each and every team will be bat tling just a little harder every game for an extra two points. The nights will soon 'be .getting shorter, so get those games started on time, and above all, keep reading that rule book. , Entitled To Bases Under this rule any thrown or pitched ball that strikes an um pire shall be in play and base runners shall be entitled to all the bases they can .make. Coach Interfcrs With, Play Any thrown ball that strikes a'coach on foul ground shall be considered in play, but if in the opinion of the umpire the coach intentionally interferes .with the thrown ball, the baserunner or runners must return to the last base touched, and the coach is penalized by the removal from the playing field. So you see, it is a very foolish coach who will not try his best to get out of the way of thrown balls. Interference (Batter’s Out) If the batter attempts to hinder the catcher from fielding or throwing a ball by stepping outside the lines of the batsman’s position, or in any way inter feres with the catcher, except if a baserunner attempting to steal is put out, the batsman shall not be out. Mlany people think this is a double penalty, but it is not. Must Touch All Bases A baserunner must touch each base when advancing, in legal order, and .when obliged to re turn to a, base must retouch the base or bases in reverse order. Should a runner miss a base on what appears to be a home-run the umpire will not call the run ner out until the play is ap pealed, and the ball thrown to that base before the runner touches said base. In the Huron- Perth AA-Star Game Jerry Smith missed second base by a fraction of an inch, but as the second baseman did not see it, I did not call the play, otherwise Jerry’s thrpe base hit would have re sulted in him being called .out had the second baseman for the Northern group or any one of his team, appealed the play, and touched the base. Ball Hits Batsman And Bat This is a play that happened last week in the Major League. A pitched ball hit the batsman and also his bat at exactly the same time, and then rolled along the ground - this ball was not swung at, many people believed the batter would be given a base. Umpire ruled it was a foul Did H . a the second called out ini- 2, If a .baserunner passes preceding runner, runner shall be mediately*. 3, A Jjatsman fails to^take his one minute after called for him, 4, A heavy penalty is imposed on Major League players if they throw the last hall >of .the game to the spectators. This is to safe guard against a scramble in the stands which might pause an in jury to spectators'. 5, A balk in Baseball entitles all runners .to advance one base. In softball it is a called ball by the umpire, 6, Ash is the most satisfactory wood for baseball bats.
