Against Zurich, in Exeter, last Thursday night the locals pound ed out a 43-7 victory, Marilyn Pfaff pitched all three games for Exeter. Airport Teams Doing Well To say the least that’s being very modest. The baseball team (currently giving Mitchell a bat tle for first place) is the hottest nine jn the loop. The A softball squad has yet to lose a tilt in league competition this season, and the B softball team is clean ing up everything in sight. It has won thirteen starts without a setback. Locals Win Bawden Trophy The Exeter rink, skipped by, Ken Hockey, with Ulric Snell and Lex McDonald, kept the Bawden trophy in Exeter in the Treble Tournament last Wednes day afternoon. A full entry took part in the competition. Last year’s,,trophy winners skipped foy M. Reed of Seaforth, were the runners-up to the Exeter rink. Legion Team Trims Hensall The Legion softballers took Hensall into camp__ last Friday night by an impressive 16-6 score. Johnny Rliude and Fred Baynham divided the Bantams Also Win The Exeter Bantams Dashwood on the home last Thursday night by of 18-3. Chuck Parsons tossing for the locals. Frank Taylor will also be starting Huron Express, winner at Strathroy. Dashwood Hits Win Column The Dashwood Intermediates finally crashed the win column in the Huron-Perth standing. After coming within striking dis tance op several occasions they trimmfed Lucan 10-5. Ray Yelle was the winning pitcher. Makes Fine Start Youthful Bob Russell fine start on the mound Intermediate squad on night and for the first seven innings held the league-leading Mitchell team to three runs. His easy motion and coolness on the slab, plus his fine control, should give Exeter a fair sort of a twirler in the very near future. Mitchell Leads League This season the Huron-Perth adopted, a point system in figur ing the league standing, was done in order to get away from replaying, tie games. Hav ing played more games, Mitchell now is on top. However, if the standing was on a percentage basis, both Centralia and Clinton would be ahead of Mitchell, tied with a .700 percentage, Mitchell is going along at a .643 'clip. So Sorry In the report of last week’s game foetween the Exeter lassies and Dashwood, we credited Mari lyn Pfaff with -a home run in stead of Eileen Hodgins. Thank You, Leroy! Before Monday night’s game got u n d_e r w a y at Community Park, umpire Leroy .O’Brien claimed Exeter had the best dia mond in the league. Eight runs in the eighth frame gave the league-leading Mitchell Legionnaires a thumping 11-3 win over the locals mu the home diamond Monday night; Up until the eighth it was a close struggle with the locals pushing two runs across the plate in the second to overtake Mitchell’s one-run lead. The visi tors tied the game up in the fourth and broke the deadlock with a single tally in the seventh. ' Manager Joe Creech started youthful Bob Russell on 'the mound for Exeter and uptil he began to tire in the eighth the fifteen-year-pld twirler turned in a <fine chore. While he struck put but one man, Russell had excellent control and issued no free passes in the first seven frames." In that time not more than five batters faced him in any one inning. Most of them hit grounders that were easily handled by the infield. In the eighth frame Mitchell batters went to the plate twelve times before Exeter halted the rally. Shaw went in to relieve Russell but was unable to cool off the opposition. After pitching to five men, Glover took over and struck out Chessell, the se cond man to face him. At the plate Darling, Robinson and Penhale each clipped two hits in four times at ibat. Darling and Robinson both knicked Mal- co for a double. The Mitchell hits were scattered fairly evenly ■amongst the lineup with Weber having the best average, two for four. What is the 'proper decision? Answer Since asking this question, I have heard a lot of controversy about it, around the town, how ever the answer is—The runner is not out, the ball must be held in one or both hands to complete a legal catch. This column has got a scoop on two or three important plays this year, the most recent is the double penalty that should have been called on the Exeter catcher in the Exeter-Centralia game, however here is another one. A very when Rule In legal “Time” and iplay shall be sus pended until he calls play again, and during the interim, no player shall be put out, base be run or run sedyed. Time shall not be called foy the umpire until the ball be held by the pitcher while standing in his position, except in case of accident to a player or umpire. On Close Plays If the ball and runner reach the base <at the same time the runnei’ is safe, also on any force play, or a .play on a runner “tag ging up’ after a caught fly, the balks must reach the base bef ore the runner; otherwise he is safe. Base Detached From Fastening If a base runner in attempting to reach a base detach it from its fastening before being put out, in all fairness to him shall be declared safe, this is a rule numerous teams go wrong on and think they must follow the base. Don’t do it, you don’t have to, as it is a definite rule-—Rule 49 Section 10. Are You Guilty Of Rule 58 Under no circumstances 'Shall a manager, captain or player dis pute the accuracy of the umpire’s judgment and Delaying The There are this district are helping to ruin the .grand old game of baseball. I speak chiefly of pitchers and catchers, catch ers are taking too much time to put on pads at the commence ment of an inning, and pitchers failing to deliver the ball to the batsman within the alloted time of twenty seconds. Umpires can call a ball on any pitcher fails .to do this, so when they start doing it, don’t \ say didn’t know, your fans are ing to see a baseball game. Change Of Players You may change your players at any time you desire, except when the ball is in play, tor which reason the .umpire should call time, but when one pitcher is substituted for anotli§i\ the new pitcher must continue to pitch until the batsman then at bat is put out, or has reached first base, or until the. side has been retired. A pitwh hitter going in to replace a man at bat (bats man) Will take the count that was on the batter he replaced. Scoring note — If tile first batter liad two strikes mt him, and the pinch hitter misses the third strike, charge the first batter with a strikeout, all other cases, charge the second batter. Did You Know That 1. A complete inning is two innings. 2. Base runners can steal on a foul tip. 3. A team must have nine players before starting and dur ing a game. 4. The Umpire in Chief (Plate Umpire) authority to declare a game for feited. 5. In the Major Leagues, the home team must have at least one dozen balls on the field dur ing a game. 6.
