The Citizen, 2012-12-20, Page 40PAGE 40. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012.By Jenna McDonaldThis week Ms Armstrong’s Grade7/8 class had visitors from CentralHuron and F.E. Madill Secondary
Schools who came in and talked to
us about high school choices and the
fourth pathways: university, college,
workplace and apprenticeship. The
next day we had a visit from Jeff
Piro who works for the board office
as the co-ordinator for co-op classes,
OYAP, dual credit courses and high
skills majors. He shared many things
with us. We were amazed to find outhow many choices we had once wereached the senior grades in highschool. Did you know, for example,
that you can take a high school and
college course at the same time and
get both credits and it costs you
nothing? Did you know that in some
cases you can start apprenticeships
when you are still in high school?
Did you know that in co-op
education you can go to classes of
your choice and then work for half a
day? On behalf of my class I wouldlike to thank our guests for theirtime. On Tuesday this past week the
school council organized carol-
singing in Londesborough. Those
who participated had a wonderful
time and enjoyed the hot drinks after
the event as well.
By the way, only in math problems
is it okay for someone to go out and
buy 90 watermelons.

Hello everyone, Ben here. This
week a dairy educator, Miss
Anneliese, came to Hullett Central
on Wednesday and Thursday. She
spoke to JK - Grade 6 about different
things and we are looking forward to
another visit. In the Grade 3/4 and
4/5 classes they learned about food
pyramids and food chains for a cow.
The Grade 5/6 students learned
about the importance of milk, the
parts of a cow and they reviewed
Canada’s Food Guide. The younger
grades learned about growth and
change in animals. Happy holidayseveryone, that’s all for this week. Ihope to write you soon.By Morgan HowsonLast week the Grade 1 students

land and lives in Toronto), as well as
letters of support from Huron-Bruce
MP Ben Lobb and Huron-Bruce
MPP Lisa Thompson.
He said he thinks that the site-
specific agreement is a good thing
because it keeps control in council’s
hands, so that if the land does change
hands, although such a change is not
something he’s hoping for in the
immediate future, the issue would
return to council for a decision.
He said he is planning on doubling
his staff when he moves into the new
building, going from 11 employees
up to 25. He said that while that
might not seem like a lot of jobs to
add to the local economy, every little
bit helps.
“It all helps, it really does,” he
said.
North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent
spoke in favour of the amendment,
saying that the land has not been
used for agriculture for nearly 50
years since the school was first built,
so he had no problem with it being
zoned for a business such as Euro-
Parts.
In fact, he said, the landscaping
costs would be sizeable if council
did want to convert the property
back to an agriculture use. There
would also be heritage concerns as
well.
Goderich’s Deb Shewfelt,
however, was skeptical, saying that
council should look on both sides of
the coin and be cautious.
Huron East’s Joe Steffler
supported the idea because of its
economic development aspect.
“Approving this only makes sense
for our economic development,” he
said.
Bluewater’s Paul Klopp said he
supported the application, but had a
number of issues with the Provincial
Policy Statement which was holding
the application up.
He said that he has watched for too
long as cities take prime agricultural
land out of production in order to
expand the limits of cities, but then
they turn around and dictate how
rural municipalities can use their
own land.
“I think this is the best example of
what we should do,” Klopp said.
“We have someone who comes in
and does their homework.”
Council then approved the
application. Director of Planning
Scott Tousaw told council that there
is a 20-day appeal period and that
will have to be circulated before the
application can be finally approved.
