The Grey Township Craftswomen
finished up their Christmas
crafts project by making 48
fresh Christmas arrangements for
the residents of Huronlea Home for
the Aged, Brussels.
On Monday, Dec. 10, the girls got
together at the home of leader Ingrid
Backx to put together the
arrangements. Christmas mugs were
filled with oasis and then the
arranging got underway. The
members used cedar, pine, spruce,
yew and holly to cover all of the
oasis in greenery and then they
decorated with both natural (pine
cones, dried lemon slices, globe
thistles, sumac and berries) and
Christmas decorations (small
Christmas balls, presents and bows).
In about 90 minutes, 48
beautifully decorated mugs werefinished. On Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. the 12members went to Huronlea –
everyone taking their own creations.
Members, with the help of staff,
delivered the arrangements to
all the residents in their rooms with a
few extra arrangements left
in the dining room and the nurses
station. When everything
was delivered, members sang
“We Wish You A Merry Christmas”
to the residents as they were
leaving.
Thank you to Steve Cook whohelped to organize the delivery andwho provided us with refreshments
afterwards.
Members who successfully
completed this 4-H project were:
Amanda Morrison, Julia VanNes,
Grace VanNes, Alida Swart, Johanna
Blake, Kesley Rathwell, Jolande
Oudshoorn, Ingrid Boettcher, Femke
Backx, Emma Baan, Jeanette
and Charlene Schramm. Leaders
were Ingrid Backx and Monique
Baan.
Jane Muegge, agriculture and
rural economic development advisor
for the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
(OMAFRA) recently announced
that she is retiring at the end of the
year.
Muegge made the announcement
to Huron County Council at its Dec.
12 Committee of the Whole
meeting, where she is a monthly
fixture.
She said that while no final
decision has been made as to how
she will be replaced, she will be
available to help when that person
does come along.
She asked councillors to indulge
her at the meeting and allow her a
few minutes to speak in order to
review her career and all the
programs she has been involved
with over the years.
Muegge recalled that she was one
of the first people to work with rural
economic development in Huron
County, working with the current
head of the Huron County Planning
Department Scott Tousaw, as well as
Professor Wayne Caldwell, who has
worked extensively in the
community.
She remembered acting as chair
for a pre-amalgamation public
meeting for the soon-to-be Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh when people
were upset about amalgamation.
She was one of the founding
members of the Huron Agriculture
and Water Festival, which has since
grown into one of the county’s
biggest festivals.
She also works on the Rails to
Trails project that runs through
Huron County, working with both
farmers and members of the public.
