SportsIronmen top Sailors twice to up record to 13-10
The Wingham Ironmen improved
to 13-10 in the Western Junior C
Hockey League by scoring a pair of
victories over the basement-dwelling
Goderich Sailors over the weekend.
Netminder Ben Errington
recorded his first career shutout on
Friday evening at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex as the
Ironmen posted a 6-0 decision. On
Saturday, at the Maitland Recreation
Centre in Goderich, Wingham
scored a 5-1 victory.
Captain Aaron Armstrong again
paced the offence as he scored once
and picked up four assists.
Defenceman Brett Brophy netted a
pair of goals while single markers
were tallied by Brayden Pellett,
Drew Gross and Joey Terwoord.
Blair Goss collected a pair of assists
with single helpers going to Cole
Pellett, Greg Scott, Steve
Kerr, Terwoord and goaltender
Errington.
The Ironmen dominated play
throughout the game, but were only
able to stake out a 1-0 advantage
after the opening 20 minutes.
Wingham scored four times in the
second period and added one more
in the final frame.
Coach Russ Sutton said it was a
tough start to the game for the
Ironmen.
“We played okay. Goderich came
out strong. They came out to play
tonight and they were firing on all
cylinders for the first 20 minutes
anyways,” he said. “With the
experience of the guys and our
speed, [we] kind of wrote them
down.”
The coach noted that Goderich
made a couple of mistakes and
Wingham was able to capitalize on
them and the play started to shift a
bit.
The power play was working for
the Ironmen in the contest.
“We tried a few different things
tonight, some different players, we
though we’d try to mix it up and we
ended up with two power play
goals,” said Sutton. He added that a
five-minute major penalty really hurt
Goderich.
Netminder Errington said it was a
pretty good game. “Good offence
throughout the game. Well played
defence too. A shutout, I can’t
complain,” he said.
He said it felt good to get that first
shutout. “It’s good to get that
monkey off my back,” said
Errington. “Hopefully keep that roll
for tomorrow.”
The netminder said it wasn’t too
difficult, but there were a few
interesting scrambles in front of the
crease. “But, we got through it,” he
said.
Derek Elliott paced the offence
on Saturday as he netted a pair
of goals and added an assist.
Getting single markers were
Pellett, Terwoord and Nic Carter.
Armstrong and Brophy collected
two assists each with single helpers
going to Terwoord and Matt
Baker.
Chace Duckworth scored for
Goderich.
Wingham outshot the Sailors 39-
15 and the Ironmen were 4-7 on the
power play.
The Ironmen have a single game
this weekend, a Sunday afternoon
contest at the P and H Centre in
Hanover at 4 p.m. against the
Barons.

On Dec. 2, the Blyth Brussels
Atom Reps posted a 10-2 win over
Elma Logan.
Previously, on Dec. 1, the team
lost a tight match against Seaforth
2-0.
The game was tied 0-0 in the
second period when a Seaforth
player stole the puck and scored on
a break away.
The score remained 1-0 until
the last few minutes of the third
period.
The reps pulled the goalie for the
extra attacker, but Seaforth added
the empty net goal to win 2-0.
Driving to the hole
Efforts by players like Hunter Broda, shown here trying to
outmanoeuvre an opponent from St. Marys District and
Vocational Institute, helped propel Central Huron
Secondary School’s (CHSS) Senior Boys Basketball team
to the consolation finals at the St. Marys Invitational
Tournament. CHSS was edged out in the finals. (Photo
