Machinery arrives as Winthrop store to be demolished
It’s here one day and gone the
next. The snow caused a great deal
of excitement for people last weekand now this week it hasdisappeared. The river and creeklevels are quite high with the rain
received late Saturday and Sunday.
Along with the changeable weather,
comes many people getting sick.
Colds, flu, coughing, chills – you
name it and I have heard of many
with a variety of symptoms. Take
care out there and hopefully
everyone will be well for Christmas.
My apologies to Graeme Craig for
missing his name in the recipients of
the Queen’s Diamond JubileeMedals two weeks ago in my article.I was told his name and in myscribbling notes, missed his name.
Congratulations to Audrey Cardiff
on her 80th birthday party. She was
surprised when all her family was
able to attend the dinner at
Cinnamon Jim’s and really surprised
when members of the Harmony
Kings arrived to sing. The surprises
continued when they returned to find
a house full of friends waiting to
congratulate the birthday girl.
Audrey and Jack’s family includeColleen, Allan, Janet, Catharine,Stuart and Rob. Congrats to Audrey.Congratulations to Betty
Campbell on celebrating her 80th
birthday on the weekend. A lovely
come and go was held with a great
crowd dropping in. The family
enjoyed a dinner following the
afternoon activities. A surprise was
Santa and Mrs. Claus dropping by
and wishing Betty happy birthday.
Betty’s children, Laurie and Julie
and their families all attended.
Wednesday evening last week was
a little hot in Walton. A small tractor
on the lot took fire and the fire
department was called. They had the
fire out quickly and no other damage
was caused.
Congratulations to the McGavin
family on the honour of the display
at the Huron County Museum. The
McGavin name has been honoured
on the wall of the Ontario
Agriculture Hall of Fame at the
Museum. Gordon McGavin was
recognized with a framed replica of
his exhibit that hangs in the Hall of
Fame at Heritage Park in Milton.
Russel Bolton was also recognized
for his contributions in Agriculture.
I hope Margery Huether is feeling
better and is soon back to Seaforth
Hospital. At last info, she was still in
London and has had surgery on her
back. She will moving to Parkwood
for recovery and then hopefully back
to Seaforth. Our thoughts are with
the Jacklin family as Joyce Jacklin is
in Stratford Hospital.
Congratulations to Don, Lenore
and Brent Scrimgeour on celebrating
their 39th anniversary of the store in
Blyth. They had CKNX on hand and
the store was busy all day with many
dropping in to congratulate the
family.
Christmas is only three weeks
away. It’s time to get your Christmas
shopping done. Don’t forget to
support the local stores and keep the
village of Brussels thriving. TheSanta Claus parades in Seaforth andBrussels were nice parades for ourarea with a good attendance. Friday
night was a little cold and windy but
Brussels weather was better.
Machinery has arrived at the
former Winthrop store this week.
The building is to be taken down and
maybe this is the start. McGavin’s
were robbed during the night on
Sunday evening. The investigation
is ongoing at this time.
There is probably a lot more news
around the area and I would
appreciate folks giving me a call. I
am out and about – but miss some
news items.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week and kicking off December

Looking good, doing good
For the last 30 days the men of McGavin Farm Equipment Ltd. participated in ‘Movember’ in
an attempt to raise awareness, as well as funds, to help battle prostate cancer. Over a dozen
men participated in the month-long challenge with Justin Laporte, third from left, coming out
on top of the contest, which was judged by the ladies of the business. By the end of the month
McGavin Farm Equipment raised nearly $1,000 for the cause, $500 of which was donated by
the business directly to Prostate Cancer Canada. From left: Randy McClure, Brian Wiersma,

HE council accepts library changes

Huron East Council accepted
changes made to the floor plan for
the Brussels Library by chief
building official Paul Josling at their
Nov. 20 meeting.
Josling presented his plan to
councillors saying that it would
simplify the library’s design while at
the same time cutting costs.
In short, Josling proposed that the
steps on the new north elevation of
the building be removed and that the
building be pulled to the north to
keep a straight wall along that side.
“I felt this would reduce costs
considerably both in the cost of the
foundation and the cost of the roof,
as it simplifies both the roof and the
foundation,” Josling wrote in his
recommendation to council. “It
would also reduce costs as the
angled entrance and steps, etc.
required would be very expensive to
construct. This would also eliminate
some costs for materials in that a
door is eliminated.”
Josling said the change also
increases the floor space for the
interior of the library.
“This proposed change in plans
also eliminates a large portion of the
hallway inside and that gives more
floor area to the library room and
the programming room on either
side of the hallway,” Josling wrote.
At the meeting, Councillor David
Blaney defended the plans, saying
that Josling won’t be able to “fix
everything” with the library, just
make them as good as they can be
for the project with the help of
architect John Rutledge.
Councillor Les Falconer agreed
with Blaney saying that the project
has been going on for too long and
that it should be completed sooner
rather than later.
“It’s about time we do it, but let’s
do it right,” Falconer said.
Prior to the council meeting,
Josling had met with Rutledge and
the building committee where
Josling’s proposed changes were
reviewed.
A motion was then made to accept
Josling’s proposed changes and re-
tender the project with a projected
construction start date of spring,
2013. The motion was accepted.
