THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2012.Over 250 people attend Remembrance Day ceremony Annual turkey dinner feeds 550 at Brussels arena Preparing for the dinner rush Duff’s United Church in Walton hosted their annual turkey supper at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Nov. 7. Shown here getting the desserts ready are Sharon Stephenson, left, and Marie McGavin. (Denny Scott photo) The Walton Duff’s United Church annual turkey supper was held last week with a terrific turnout as usual. The sold out supper fed 550 folks and everything went very smoothly. The many heads of the different sections were well prepared with all they needed and managed to get everyone fed in record time. Congrats to all the men and women of Duff’s United for doing a great job and thanks to all who support the dinner. It was deer hunting season last week and there are a few less Bambis to hit on the road. Many of the groups report actually getting less deer than other years. The good weather, or too much corn still standing may have been why. Maybe the deer are getting smarter! It is best to keep your eyes open though as deer collisions are up across the County according to OPP reports. Ross and Mary Procter, their son Chris and friend Jason have returned from a two-week trip to the west. They flew to Edmonton and rented a car to travel to many of the great sites of the province. They attended the antique motorcycle convention at Wetaskiwin, travelled to Banff and Lake Louise. They also visited with an old friend at Swift Current, Saskatchewan. They had a great time with Chris as their chauffeur and are glad to be home. Our get-well wishes go to George Cousins who has had surgery on his wrist. We hope he gets along well in his recovery. We are hoping George Adams is improving as he is in hospital. He was taken to hospital last week and is in Stratford at time of writing. There is changing scenery around the country side. The house on the former Fisher farm, now Terpstra, on Hullett McKillop Rd. was taken down and the tree stumps uprooted and burned last week. A second farm, the former Smith farm, now Terpstra, on Canada Company Rd. also had the same treatment. It makes quite a change on the properties. The Gowing/Adams families gathered for a get together to celebrate the marriage of Heather Gowing and her husband Kenny, who were married this past June in Bermuda. Heather is the daughter of Ken and Nancy Gowing, and the granddaughter of Viola Adams and Betty Gowing. The two families met to enjoy a social evening of visiting, sharing a meal and catching up everyone, while the couple was home for holidays. The couple has lived in Bermuda for seven years and continue to live there. They played continuous photos of the wedding for everyone to enjoy. Following the meal, a lively and very talented group of four young people arrived to provide entertainment for an hour. The Blazing Fiddles are a musical group who play fantastic music with violins, bass fiddle, spoons and piano. A very enjoyable evening for all. Welcome to Roy and Donna Fisher who have moved into Brussels. We hope they are enjoying their new surroundings and being so close to everything downtown. Congratulations to Nicole (White) and Mark Olson on the birth of a second daughter. Claira Grace is welcomed home by big sister Lyla and happy grandparents are Randy and Donna White and Neil and Ruth Olson. Returning from a wonderful trip is Valerie Gratto. She and a high school friend took a 14 day Panama Canal Cruise. They started out on Oct. 5 from Fort Lauderdale and arrived Oct. 19 in San Diego. They took this particular trip because it had relaxing sailing days between stops. They left Fort Lauderdale and sailed for two days and then stopped in Cartegna, Columbia for a tour. It is a very old city with lots of bright coloured buildings and very narrow streets. They saw a huge old fort that overlooked the city. The next morning, they were at the mouth of the canal at 6:30 a.m. and their “time” was slotted for 7:30 a.m. They were told that the passing through the canal was booked a year in advance and you have to be on time. You enter the canal from the Atlantic Ocean into Limon Bay that takes you to the first lock – Gatum Lock. You then sail into the huge Gatum Lake, where the ships wait to go out into the Atlantic. The Canal crossing is 38 miles long but is very slow going. A “pilot” goes on board in Limon Bay to help the cruise ship pass through. It takes eight hours to go through and you slowly follow the “buoys” to keep the ships in the deepest part of the passage. The surrounding area all along the canal is rainforest and apparently there are a lot of “mudslides’, as you see dredging boats all along. You come to the last two locks – the Pedro Miguel Lock and finally the Miraflores Lock, where they saw a tall building with balconies and Here it is the first week of November and on a particular nice day last week many farmers were busy. There were some harvesting of white beans, some soybeans and others combining corn, even wheat still be planted. Manure spreading was also popular since the ground has dried some. I have heard of many who have completed the harvest and now the job of washing up equipment and putting it away forthe winter begins. It is hard to believe after enjoying the beautiful weather on Remembrance Day, that Monday was cooler, windy and wet and is a taste of what’s in the future. The joy of living in southwestern Ontario is our changing seasons, and we are almost through the fall season. Christmas is only six weeks away, so if you like to spread out your shopping, it’s time to start. Remembrance Day was a beautiful day and the attendance proved the fact. There were approximately 250 people at the service at the Brussels Cenotaph. It was nice to see people of all ages in attendance. Families with grandparents and small children participated in laying their poppies on the wreaths. It is nice to see adults bringing their children withthe hope that they too, will carry on the Remembrance tradition as they grow. If not for the sacrifice of 117,000 Canadian soldiers, we may not enjoy the freedoms we have today. The poppy is worn for about two weeks before Nov. 11 to honour those who have served and is placed on Nov. 11 at a cenotaph in respect of those who have fallen, a final act of remembering. The Walton Hall catered to its first family Christmas get together on Saturday. The Armstrong family of which Lillian (Armstrong) Appleby and her family are a part enjoyed a turkey dinner downstairs. Over 40 guests gathered then went upstairs to visit and await the arrival of a special guest. Santa arrived to their delight and they had a great afternoon visiting, enjoying snacks and watching the youngsters having fun. The ladies of the hall board who helped for the day included Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Barb Durrell and Judy Emmrich. Jo-Ann and Judy had decorated the hall in its Christmas finery on Thursday evening. The Chesley Saddle Club held its annual meeting and pot luck social later on Saturday evening at the hall. They had a good crowd attend and reports are they had a very successful year and great weather for their trail rides. They enjoyed a social evening following the dinner. Congratulations to Chris and Erin Blake who have moved into their new home last week. I’m sure they will find it wonderful and the boys, Mason and Foster, will have plenty of room to run as they grow up. ✂✂ ✂✂ Flu Clinic Line:519-482-3416 ext. 2511 or toll free 1-877-837-6143 ext. 2511 www.huroncounty.ca/health Get your flu shot early this year.
