Improved defensive work nets two wins for Ironmen
Sports
An improved defensive zone
coverage helped the Wingham
Ironmen record a pair of victories on
the weekend in Western Junior C
Hockey League play.
Aaron Armstrong had two goals
and five assists on Friday evening as
the Ironmen scored a 9-4 decision
over the Hanover Barons at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex. On Saturday, at the Mount
Forest District Community Centre,
Armstrong and Derek Elliott had
three goals and two assists each as
Wingham posted a 9-3 victory over
the Patriots.
Drew Gross netted three goals for
the Ironmen on Friday, with Brayden
Pellett chipping in with a pair of
markers. Single goals were tallied by
Cole Pellett and Josh Stewart. Brett
Brophy, Gross and Elliott collected
two assists each, with single helpers
going to Dylan Williams, Matt
McCracken, Matt Baker, Darren
Kerr and Stewart.
Alex Kuntz scored two goals for
Hanover. Single goals were tallied
by Cole Pellett and Stewart. Brett
Brophy, Gross and Elliott collected
two assists each, with single helpers
going to Dylan Williams, Matt
McCracken, Matt Baker, Darren
Kerr and Stewart.
The Ironmen led 3-1 after the first
period and took a 7-2 advantage into
the third period on Friday against the
Barons. Wingham outshot the
Barons 38-36 and were 0-4 on the
power play.
Coach Russ Sutton said the
players came ready to play.
“The guys came out, ready to play
and were hungry for a win. We
haven’t had one in four games,” he
said. “It sure showed tonight.”
The Ironmen received scoring
from all four lines.
“All our lines chipped in tonight,
which was good and it makes it
easier on our number one line,” said
Sutton.
He added that when they have
secondary scoring it makes the team
deeper and more of a threat.
Player Cole Pellett said it was a
good game. “I think we played a full
60 minutes out there and we were
working hard and we got a bit of a
roll going now,” he said.
Pellett, who returned to the lineup
after missing the start of the season,
said it was good to score a goal.
“Ìt’s good. It gets the monkey off
my back, but the guys are helping
me out a lot,” he said. “I’m starting
to feed off their energy.”
He returned to Wingham because
he wants to play for the Ironmen.
“There’s no where else to play,” said
Pellett.
The Ironmen erupted for six
unanswered goals in the third period
on Saturday as they skated to the
decision over the Patriots.
Cole Pellett added two goals to the
offence and Nic Carter chipped in
with a single marker. Justin Jacklin
and Gross picked up two assists
apiece. Single helpers were collected
by Brophy, Kerr, Carter, Drew
Shantz and netminder Justin
Hammond.
Mount Forest outshot the Ironmen
35-29 and Wingham was 0-5 on the
power play. Scoring for the Patriots
were Dean Nixon, Luke Richardson
and Matt Marshall.
The Ironmen play a pair of games
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex this weekend.
On Friday, they host the Walkerton
Hawks and on Saturday they
entertain the Kincardine Bulldogs.
Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
AA Lightning girls started their
weekend against Whitby Wolves.
Scoring the lone Lightning goal was
Megan Wilton with the assist going
to Jamey Cunningham. All the girls
played a great game against the
Wolves but ended up losing 3-1.
Great game Megan Wilton.
In the Lightning’s second game
they played the Brampton
Canadettes. The girls played their
hearts out against the Canadettes but
some penalties made it hard on the
Lightning. Cara Calhoun scored the
lone unassisted goal of the game
from a shot from the point. As the
game came to an end the Canadettes
came out with the victory 4-1 over
the Saugeen girls. Great game in net
from Julia Beaven and on wing from
Hana Solinger and Jaymee Nolan.
Game three had the Saugeen
squad playing the Eagles from
Boston. The Eagles came out flying
and took the game by a score of 4-0.
All the girls played a great game and
should be proud of the way they
played this very disciplined team.
The final game saw the Lightning
girls playing the Chicago Mission.
As the game unfolded, the
Lightning played a great first period.
As the second period went on
disciplined play allowed the girls to
score their first of the game. With
her first goal of the year Emma
Swift put the girls on the
scoreboard.
In that same period Madison
Beishuizen scored the team’s second
goal. In the third the girls kept up the
high pace and Jaymee Nolan scored
the third goal with the assist going to
Calhoun. An exceptional game was
played by Beishuizen.
On Saturday, Nov. 10 the Saugeen
Maitland organization held its
annual sponsorship appreciation
day. With the first game scheduled
for 12:30 p.m. the PeeWee AA girls
took to the ice to play the Oakville
Hornets.
Oakville opened the scoring in the
first. Thirteen seconds later the
Lightning struck and Jayme Nolan
put the puck in the net with the
assist from Alyssa Andrews. Not 30
seconds later the Hornets answered
back with their second goal and
ended the period ahead by one.
In the second period the action
was back and forth and at the five-
minute mark Jaymee Nolan netted
her second of the game and brought
the Lightning back even to start the
third.
In the third the Hornets scored
two more goals and ended the game
winning by a score of 4-2. Although
the girls lost the game, they played a
very good game.
