The service was conducted by the Brussels Legion and officiated by Padre Sandra Cable and Poppy Chairman John Lowe, not pictured. After the opening prayer, President Deb Cann brought a wreath around the room, welcoming those in attendance to place their poppies on the wreath. Placing her poppy at the service is Mary I. Humphries. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Remembrance Day service marked by good weather We had fine weather for the Remembrance Day services. The warm temperature and lack of precipitation seemed out of step with the occasion. The memories for the eleventh and the horrors of war seem more real when the weather is rotten. The depth of thinking and remembering of our military history is significant. Services held across our great land offered a chance to recognize the history we share, only because we had men and women ready to offer the ultimate sacrifice and were there to answer the call for duty. Thoughts and memories are very personal and each person handles those thoughts in their own way, with the common day of remembering on the 11th. So for another year the poppy is on display as a reminder of the debt we owe to so many. It’s bird time in Brussels again. A pretty yellow canary has been flying with the sparrows on Tory Hill. Yes it is a canary, bright yellow, curved beak. The little one has been watched by Joan Jacobs since August and eats heartily along with the sparrows at her feeder. She – thebird, not Joan – has no interest inthe nice cage with canary food thatis waiting on the deck. In the meantime the orphan canary is coping well with her freedom. She also goes to eat at the Legers as they too have the food she likes. The list is getting longer of folks who wonder about her winter plans. If you’re missing your pet, come to the rescue soon. The 5R’s Community Thrift Shop celebrated another year in business last Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Twenty-one years as a main street business: is reason to celebrate, especially when you think about the changes in the economy during that time frame. When the 5R’s opened in the Mitchell building in 1991, only the Salvation Army had similar stores in our area. As the economy changed, so did the resale business: now most towns have consignment or second hand or thrift store in many, many forms. As a not-for-profit enterprise, we have survived some great ups and several very serious downs, as an ever-changing volunteer board has guided its success well over these 21 years. Thanks go to retiring Cookie and Elsie and welcome to the new board members Alicia and Susan, who join Linda, Melody, Judy and Ruth. Volunteers are what kept the doors open and as one of the originals Wilda Higgins was recognized as valuable and continues to give her time to us every Wednesday afternoon. thankyou Wilda. Joan Jacobs, one of theoriginal women hired gave her finalstaff report at the meeting. New volunteer forms were approved and Joan filled hers out with severalother so the store can continue to bea service to our community. We spent the weekend in Barrie. Ella and Sloan are keeping Curt and Julie alert. Time in a pool is still thebest way to tire kids and of coursethe adults.Take care of yourself. Bye now, Betty G.W. At the Branch Hundreds attend Brussels service By Jo-Ann McDonald “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, or the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” These solemn words were repeated at hundreds of Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The Comrades of Brussels Legion Branch 218 and members of the community of Brussels gathered at the cenotaph at the Brussels Legion to observe and participate in the ceremony of Remembrance. Comrade John Lowe, Poppy Chairman of Branch 218, President Deb Cann and Padre Sandra Cable of the Branch led the service. The comrades of the Branch, Brussels Legion Pipe Band, Brussels Cadet Corp 2967 and members of the Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders along with around 250 community members observed the ceremony under the warm sunny skies. The members paraded to Melville Presbyterian Church for the service conducted by Pastor Elwin Garland. A light lunch was enjoyed by many at the Branch following the service. The service at Huronlea was conducted again by Comrades John and Padre Sandra Cable delivering the message to the 45 residents in attendance. The wreath was presented to the residents to pin their poppies on followed by the Comrades of Branch 218 in attendance. Thanks to Betty Campbell for providing the music for the service. A light lunch of cheese and crackers was served to the residents following the service. The regular activities of Branch 218 were conducted during the week. The Cadets met on Tuesday evening and practised the drills for Remembrance Day service. The Thursday night darts had more darters attending the second night of play. There were 12 darters enjoying the evening of fun. Winners were: first, Ron Schmidt and Catrina Josling; second, Marlene Rutledge and Sandra Josling; high, Sharon Robbins, 120; Ron, 140. Come out and enjoy a night of darts and fun anytime you can. Teams are random draws of players each night. Anyone in the community is welcome. The Friday night supper of roasted peameal bacon was enjoyed by a small, but dedicated crowd, who always know the meal will be good, of only 20. This week will be roast beef. The Brussels Legion was the venue for the joint family gathering of the Gowing/Adams family. They enjoyed a meal provided by the Branch. Working for the Branch was Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy Lee and Mary Bradshaw. The Remembrance Day luncheon was served by Comrades Greta Zehr, Linda Bird and Mary Bradshaw. Many Comrades have been under the weather this past week. We hope Comrade George Adams is feeling better after a stay in hospital.
