On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold steady. Choice steers and heifers sold $109 to $112 with sales to $125. Second cut sold $104 to $109. Cows sold $1 to $2 higher. On Thursday veal sold on a very strong active trade with beef calves holding steady and holstein calves trading easier. Light lambs sold steady and heavy lambs sold $10 higher. Sheep sold steady and goats sold steady to last week’s prices. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on a strong active trade. (Denny Scott photo) By Nathan Stevens The last two weeks have been a mix of good and bad news for Canadian farmers and the Agri-food industry. An E. coli tainted meat incident originating at the XL Food plant in Alberta has raised serious concerns about our food safety regulations. On the other hand, the Federal Red Tape Reduction Action Plan represents a tremendous opportunity to reduce the regulatory burden on farmers. These two developments highlight the importance of carefully balancing the regulatory system to ensure safe food without placing an undue regulatory burden on the players within the food system. On the negative side, the XL Food plant incident highlights the fact that things can and will go wrong from time to time. The risk of tainted food products exists for large and small operations alike, but the impact felt is directly related to scale. While the reasons for the E.
