Comrade Deb called the meeting to order. She reminded everyone that Zone Commanders will be attending the October meeting and uniforms or appropriate dress is required. The fish fry crew went to Mitchell for the final away fish fry event. The Mitchell Hawks hockey team had a promotional evening for their home opener game. Buying a ticket for the fish fry got you a ticket for the hockey game. The idea went over very well because the crew fed over 300 folks before the game. Helping out the Branch were Glenn Bridge, George Adams, Lisa Glanville, Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins, Deb Caan, Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald. The final fish fry event for the Branch will be at the Branch on Oct. 13. All Comrades will hopefully come out and support the Branch and celebrate their membership by paying their 2013 dues and being an early bird. Memberships paid before Dec. 1 are eligible to win their 2014 dues. The early-bird winner for September was Jim Brown. Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald attended a “brainstorming” meeting at the Clinton Branch on Sunday afternoon. The meeting was about We would like to thank everyone who attended our Grand Opening of Huron Country Hardware. The positive comments and well wishes have made us appreciate our community even more. Final Fish Fry to be held Oct 13. Colour tour of Wawanosh Nature Centre enjoyed Oh my it’s October already and starting in just like we like it, sunny and crisp. October is a month with many traditions that only the days of autumn allow – cleaning up the gardens, getting the property ready for the snow and wind, the Belgrave fowl supper, world-wide communion and of course Thanksgiving. So lots of details are flying around in people’s heads and several lists on the table. So here’s to a grand October. One of the traditions of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority folk is the annual colourtour of their property at theWawanosh Nature Centre. Sundaywas the day and a good one it was for strolls in the woods and a wagon ride around the meadows and hills. Large ant hills were the hit for Robyn and Jill, the many coloured sumac was my high point and Ralph enjoyed watching the girls handle the several domestic snakes brought there by Sciensational Sssnakes, a company that introduces people to the real story of snakes, not the scream and run reaction. They did their work well for the two girls with us and many, many others had their pictures taken (as proof) that they really did hold several very long snakes. Several families from Brussels were seen enjoying the fun afternoon and the work of the Maitland Valley Foundation and staff. Thanks. Did you know we have a Cultural Department in Huron County? For the last couple of years trees in Huron County have been decoratedin September a theme of interest, toincrease the arts here. Now all youneed to do is walk to the gazebo on Turnberry Street and you’ll see our submission, prepared by the Horticulture Society. They are letting Huron County see their abilities, their gardening sense and their sense of humour. Jim Prior has offered to post this masterpiece on the country website for all residents to vote on their favourites. So of course we think our tree is much superior to Wingham, Goderich, Exeter and Bayfield but the only way that will be official is if you vote. Get to your nearest computer and visit www.communitree.ca and then vote for the Brussels entry. Thanks Horticulture members for taking the time and interest and most important to give us a smile for art. Friday is the last market day for this year. Be sure to get your fresh food as well as a start at Christmas shopping. The United Church folks want to help you get ready forThanksgiving dinner with less stress,so visit their bake table. Lots of piesare being prepared as you read this. We all know that food made in Huron County is the best so make your life easy and visit the market on Friday. As Canadians we really shouldn’t need a day to be thankful, everybreath we take should be full ofgratitude when we know whathappens in other places. In the tradition of our ancestors we will gather, enjoy the bounty that is ours and share a time of love and leisure. Happy Thanksgiving. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY Kathy Workman welcomed 28 people to the fall meeting and extended thanks to all the members who spent time during the summer weeding, watering and maintaining flowerbeds and boxes at the Conservation Area and at the four entrances to Brussels. In early July Mildmay Horticultural members on their annual bus trip enjoyed the Mitchell and Rammeloo gardens and the butterfly garden as well as lunch catered by Cinnamon Jim’s. The society is selling crocosmia and camassia bulbs as a fundraiser for both Brussels and the Ontario Horticultural Association. If you are interested contact any member before Oct. 20. Sandra Machan introduced Carol Reinink of Sunset Springs Greenhouse who brought a dozen new perennial varieties for a plant “show and tell”. She also demonstrated making an outside fall arrangement which can be converted to a Christmas/winter arrangement. Janet Hoonaard, Joan Jacobs, Lois Lee and Kathy Workman have taken up the challenge to decorate a “communitree” as part of Culture Days in Huron County. Check out the tree at the parkette beside the gazebo on Turnberry Street and vote at www.communitrees.ca Joan Jacobs and Mary Thomas served tea and sweets to end an enjoyable evening.
