Ironmen split games in weekend Junior C action
The Wingham Ironmen earned a
split in their two Western Junior C
Hockey League contests played on
the weekend.
After falling to the five-time
defending league champions
Walkerton Hawks, 4-1, on Friday at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, the Ironmen
travelled to Goderich on Saturday
and scored a 7-0 decision over the
Sailors.
Aaron Armstrong and Travis
Donaldson each had a goal and two
assists on Saturday, to lead the
Ironmen to the decision over the
Sailors. Drew Gross, Nic Carter,
Andrew Scott and Derek Elliott
each collected a goal and an assist.
Brayden Pellett chipped in with a
single marker.
Netminder Brandon Vanderschot
turned aside all 31 shots he faced to
record the shutout.
Wingham outshot Goderich 38-31
and were 2-4 on the power play.
The Ironmen held period leads of 3-
0 and 5-0.
The Ironmen played well on
Friday evening, just not well
enough to defeat the five-time
defending league champions.
Goals by Adam Alexander and
Connor Patton gave the Hawks a 2-
0 advantage after 20 minutes of
play. Louderkin Elder made it 3-0 in
the third period before Pellett
scored for the Ironmen, with help
from Evan Ducharme and Gross.
Wendell Cameron rounded out the
scoring for the Hawks. Each team
had 26 shots on net and the Ironmen
were 0-8 on the power play.
Assistant captain Brett Brophy of
Wingham said he thought the
Ironmen played ‘fairly well’ for the
second game of the season.
“There are a few small things we
can work on,” he said. “We have to
toughen up in our own end,
eliminate those second and third
chances.”
He said that two or three of the
Walkerton goals were the result of
rebounds.
“We have to bear down in our
own net and out-muscle those guys
and get that puck out,” he said.
Although Brophy admitted
Walkerton is a good team, he really
didn’t think they showed why they
are the five time defending
champions. He said they are a
strong team, they battle hard and
have four solid lines. He added that
they have good defence.
“I think we have the team that can
beat them this year,” said Brophy.
Coach Russ Sutton of Lucknow
said it was a great game for the
Ironmen. “We worked hard and had
our chances and just couldn’t
capitalize on the chances we had,”
he said.
The Ironmen had two apparent
goals disallowed. Sutton said the
first one was disallowed because the
referee said the puck did not cross
the goal line and the second one was
disallowed because it was knocked
in by a high stick.
The coach begged to disagree. On
the second disallowed goal, the
coach said the referee was at a bad
angle because the stick was waist
high when it got knocked in.
According to the Sutton, the
Ironmen had trouble with the power
play because of a lack of
communication by the players.
“All in all it was a good game,”
said the coach. “The guys worked
hard, they didn’t quit and played
right until the end.”
He said the score could have been
4-3 for the Ironmen. He indicated
that Ben Errington played a real
good game in net for the Ironmen.
He was solid when the team needed
him and he played the puck well.
The Ironmen are on the road for a
pair of games this weekend. The
team travels to Hanover on Friday
for an 8 p.m. contest against the
Barons and then travel to Mitchell
on Saturday for a 7:15 p.m. game
against the Hawks.

PeeWee AA team ties
Sarnia, loses to Barrie
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
Girls AA team played two games
this past weekend. On Saturday the
girls outplayed Barrie in the first
period. As the second period
finished, the girls were down and at
game end they lost a tough battle 4-
1. The goalies played an excellent
game.
On Sunday the Sarnia Lady Sting
came to Wingham to play. As the
first period started the girls were all
over Sarnia scoring one goal by
Jaymee Nolan. In the second period
Sarnia came back to tie the game. In
the third the girls went ahead on
another goal by Janelle Smeltzer,
but after a tough bounce, Sarnia
scored to end the game in a 2-2 tie.
Midget AA Lightning
win exhibtion game
The Saugeen Maitland Midget
AA Lightning won their third
exhibition game of the pre-season
by a score of 3-1 over the Kitchener
Lady Rangers on Saturday in
Wingham. The Rangers opened the
scoring in the first period, but the
Bolts stormed back with three
unanswered goals.
Early in the second period, Lexi
Smith tipped a Kelly Gribbons shot
in front of the net to score the first
Lightning goal. Maddie Duncan
also earned an assist. Smith scored
her second of the game before the
end of the second frame with assists
going to defence pairing Sarah
Biesenthal and Jamie Simpson.
Gribbons closed out the scoring in
the third, burying an unassisted goal
after stealing the puck in the Ranger
zone.
Next Saturday, the Bluewater
Hawks make a return trip to face the
Lightning at home in Wingham at
2:30 p.m.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club had a busy week full of many
highlights from a hole-in-one
Thursday, a beautiful wedding
Saturday and a successful barbecue
on Sunday.
The sudden change in weather put
a damper on some golf action but
didn’t harm the spirit and hard work
of many of the members. The
Tuesday ladies had their day washed
out but most of them still managed
to get out another day throughout
the week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19 the senior
men had 16 golfers hit the links. The
same group went home with most of
the awards. Lloyd Lamont won low
net; Bill Brown, second and Glenn
McMichael, third. Ed Hofmann and
Jamie Sanderson were longest putt
winners. Don Bone won the closest
to the pin as well as low gross with a
round of 40.
The Thursday night men had 50
golfers and shattered last year’s
record for golfers for the year but
was overshadowed by long-time
member Russ Taylor’s hole in one
on the fifth hole. Great shot Russ!
As well as Taylor’s closest to the pin
award other winners were longest
putts, Trevor Hopf, Richard Inglis
and Brandon Rybicki with hidden
score winners Brian Skinn and Larry
Pellett. Terry Anger fired a 37 to
capture low gross honours.
Saturday the club was pleased to
hold the wedding of Terra and Kyle
Aldridge. The happy couple were
married on the golf course followed
by a buffet supper and reception in
the dining lounge. The 90 family
members and friends didn’t let the
inconsistent weather conditions stop
them from having a great time.
Sunday, Sept. 23 the club held its
10th annual fall barbecue. Over 450
hungry patrons enjoyed a barbecue
beef and ham buffet catered by Jeff
Cardiff. Curling committee
chairman Lloyd Morrison did a
terrific job of putting his team of
fellow volunteer curlers in place to
help make the barbecue another
huge success.
The ladies closing golf and dinner
is scheduled to take place on
Tuesday, Oct. 2 with the Wednesday
morning senior men’s closing on
Wednesday, Oct. 3.
