School marks a somber time
This time next week pupils will be
back in their classrooms for another
year. I have always found the first
few days of each new school year
very melancholy. Things always
seem to take on a more serious tone
with the beginning of classes. The
warm weather and long days tend to
make everyone relax and enjoy the
‘roses’ of life more. The weather
even seems to take on a new feel
come Labour Day, reminding us fall
is on the doorstep. So you have just
a few more days to do anything still
on your summer wish list.
There’s been so much splashing
and giggling around our pool these
past two months, I hate to have that
end.
Remember when a local television
station used to ask every evening,
“Do you know where your children
are?” Seems it might be a good thing
to consider again. Some young folk
must be finding the summer too long
for there has been some minor
damage occurring at the school
recently, once with a policepresence. Some happenings weredaylight events.
Things may be somewhat more
hectic than usual that first week in
the halls of Hullett Central Public
School as relocated pupils and staff
learn to adapt to their new
surroundings.
The Hullett community is pleased
to welcome the newcomers from the
Blyth Public School and trust
you will find our school to your
liking.
We will all need to be more
vigilant when driving with the
school buses back on our area roads.
With the turn of the calendar page
comes the start of fall activities.
Note that the Londesborough United
Church will be holding its annual
pork chop supper on Sept. 29 at the
Londesborough Hall. More details
to follow.
The Londesborough United
Official Board will hold a meeting
on Tuesday, Sept. 11 beginning at
7:30 p.m.
Aaron Popp was injured on
Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Walton
motocross attempting to avoid
another spilled rider. He was taken
to the trauma unit at Victoria
Hospital in London and treated for
broken vertebrae, broken ribs and a
bruised lung. He returned home to
Londesborough on Wednesday in a
body cast. The cast will be a fixture
for six to eight weeks dashing any
hope of playing hockey this winter. The doctors have told him he is to beoff his bike for a year. The bike can
be repaired when Aaron is ready to
ride again.
The village offers congratulations
to Betty Hulley who celebrated
turning 80 last Sunday. Family
members and a few close friends
enjoyed time together over a meal at
the Benmiller Inn.
Later that afternoon Betty greeted
relatives and friends at a ‘come and
go’ tea at the Londesborough
Community Hall.

Fletcher presides over service
at Hope Chapel Cemetery
Londesborough United Church
minister Terry Fletcher presided
over the annual Memorial Service at
the Hope Chapel Cemetery on
Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26. The
Hope Chapel Cemetery is located on
Hullett-McKillop Line west of
London Road. A larger than usual
number of persons were present to
pay their respects to the family
members interred there.
Members of the Londesborough
United Church senior choir sang the
old hymn, “Look to the
Lighthouse”. Other hymns, “Rock
of Ages” and “Amazing Grace” were
accompanied by Ila Cunningham.
Terry chose Joshua 24: 32 as his
supporting scripture verse.
Trustees of the Hope Chapel
Cemetery will hold a meeting in the
basement of Londesborough United
on Monday, Sept. 10 beginning at 7
p.m. Others are invited to attend to
offer concerns and comments
regarding the cemetery.
In memory
Terry Fletcher of Londesborough United Church was the
guest speaker at Sunday’s annual Hope Chapel Cemetery
memorial service. Fletcher braved the high winds to deliver
his address and lead the service. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
