THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2012.SportsDual homers put Tigers over top of Stingers in HCFL A pair of two-run home runs by catcher Steve Scholl helped the Brussels Tigers defeat the Belmore Stingers 5-1 in Huron County Fastball League play at the Optimist ball park in Brussels on Friday, Aug. 3. The second home run by Scholl was inside the park with Scholl sliding safely into home plate. Rene Douchment went the distance on the mound for the Tigers. Ben Pletch connected for a double and drove in the other run for the Tigers. Contributing one single apiece were Ty Sebastian, Nathan Watson and Jason Kellington. Veteran player Doug Shawn said Douchment pitched a strong game for the Tigers. Steve Scholl’s two home runs helped at the plate. “We received some timely hitting and some strong pitching tonight,” he said. The Tigers hosted the Fullarton A’s last night (Wednesday) at the Optimist ball park in Brussels. The Tigers travel to Zurich on Sunday for a 6 p.m. game against the Rangers. Next home game for the Tigers is Aug. 24 when they host the Sebringville Sting beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the Optimist ball park in Brussels. The Brussels Tigers withstood a seventh inning rally by the Blyth Barons on Aug. 1 and scored an 8-6 decision in Huron County Fastball League play at the Optimist ball park in Brussels. Jason Kellington provided the big blow for the Tigers as he connected for a home run. Ty Sebastian also hit a home run and added a single. Jamie Hickling hit a double and single with Corey Campbell getting a double. Rapping out single base hits were Doug Shaw, Adam Corbett and Jamie Cook. Chris Stewart connected for a triple for the Barons. Scott Bromley collected a double and a single. Adam Cronin and Mike McDonald each hit a double with Mike Kerr and Steve Hewitt each rapping out a pair of singles. Ty Sebastian went the distance on the mound for the Tigers. Scott Bromley started on the mound for the Barons with Adam Cronin taking over in relief. Veteran Brussels player Doug Shaw said it was a sloppily played game. “Ty Sebastian pitched a good game,” he said. “we had timely hitting when we needed it.” Veteran Blyth player Mike McDonald said Steve Hewitt played a good game for the Barons. He added that they came back in the seventh inning and made the game close. “Their pitcher pitched a good game,” he said. Brewers still struggling Despite their best efforts on Aug. 1, the Walton Brewers just couldn’t find footing against the Sebringville Sting and lost 13-2. (Jim Brown photo) Blyth tops The Blyth Barons were able to edge out the Fullarton A’s during Huron County Fastball Action on August 3 at the Blyth ball park. The Barons were down 6-2 until a three-run homerun by Robb Finch started a rally that put them on top by a score of 8-6. The Barons were able to hold on to win the game 8-7. The Brewers hosted the Sebringville Sting on Aug. 1 and were handed a 13-2 setback. Getting singles for the Brewers were Darryl Houston, Brandon McGavin, Jeff Robinson, Paul Dolmage and Steve Hoff. Paul Dolmage started on the mound for the Brewers with Scott Cox taking over in relief. Veteran player Dolmage said the team is still struggling. However, with just over half of the schedule completed (The Brewers played 11 games of an 18-game schedule as of Aug. 1) they still have seven games remaining to get back to winning. The Brewers made the return trip to Sebringville on Aug. 8. The Brewers hosted the Zurich Rangers on Tuesday and travel to Goderich on Aug. 21 for an 8:30 p.m. contest against the Grizzlies. By Jim Brown The Citizen Barons edge out Fullarton 8-7 The Blyth Barons outlasted the Fullarton A’s, 8-7 in a Huron County Fastball League contest played Friday, Aug. 3 at the Blyth ball park. Trailing by a score of 6-2, Robb Finch clubbed a three-run home run to get the Barons to within one and then Shawn Bromley clouted a solo home run to tie the game at six. Blyth went ahead 8-6 and then hung on in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory. Craig Elliott went the distance on the mound for the Barons. Bromley also added a single. Elliott had three singles to help his cause at the plate. Chipping in with single base hits were Mike Kerr, Dana Doherty, Casey Boven, Steve Cook and Adam Cronin. Veteran player Mike Bromley said this was a good win for the Barons. “We received some timely hitting,” he said. He said Robb Finch’s three-run homer and Shawn Bromley’s solo shot were key for the comeback victory. He noted that Craig Elliott chipped in with three hits. The Barons were in Fullarton on Tuesday for a rescheduled contest against the A’s. Blyth travels to Belmore on Friday for an 8 p.m. contest against the Stingers. Next home game for the Barons is Aug. 24 when they host the Walton Brewers beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Blyth ball park.
