British Bulldog
Whether you call it British Bulldog, Octopus, Bullies,
Bullrush or Seaweed, these kids called it fun. During the
Vacation Bible School at the Zion Mennonite Fellowship on
Cranbrook Road, youth got to enjoy some fun and
fellowship through games like those shown above and
some crafts and lessons last week. (Denny Scott photo)

It’s Monday morning as I write
this and a lot is happening here. First
I watched Canada AM coming from
downtown Iqaluit and enjoyed the
tour of the town as they celebrated
Nunavut Day. The celebration was
to recognize the many small
communities and the talents that
they have, as they make up the
youngest population in Canada’s
newest and largest territory. After 20
years of negotiations this new
governing body was established in
1999.
The show this morning showed
their mace, made from Narwhal tusk
and several large jewels from this
large area. Six artists worked to
make it a reality. It is carried into
each session of parliament where
they do their work by consensus.
Imagine! Filmed footage showed the
vast beauty of this unique area
showing mountains, fiords, icebergs
and tundra. A small container
garden with the gardener showed the
flowers that are on the tundra if you
take the time to bend over to find
them. Yes it is a beautiful place. We
were there a few years ago to see
Peter Workman and it was neat to
see again the familiar communities,
buildings and places.
Meanwhile this morning Festival
Hydro is replacing poles along
Turnberry Street. Watching the new
hole being dug on our lawn
reminded me of being at the
dentist – water goes in and it’s
vacuumed out. A very sophisticated
truck with two men, CT Enterprises
from Zurich, pulses water into the
intended hole and everything but
large pieces of shale gets sucked out.
Pretty neat to watch and no worries
about hitting sewer and phone
lines.
Jill and Robyn kept us company
last week. The enthusiasm of
children is the only way to watch
life. They see things that we miss.
I’d forgotten how nice mud feels in
your toes and fingers. An electric
fence was a new lesson for them as
well. Over the mill pond in
Tottenham, the blooms of the
fireworks could be seen, even with
the full moon in the sky. Awesome!
One of those memories that will
remain.
Kid’s Corner is fast approaching.
They need magazines, toilet paper
rolls, etc. – you know all the stuff
needed for crafts. If you would like
to share give Elaine Armstrong a
call. It’s needed for Aug. 13-17,
you’d be welcome as well.
Be sure to keep hydrated, it’s the
only body you have, so be nice to it
as we cope with the heat.
Enjoy all the fresh produce that
is maturing now.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

At the Branch
Cadets reviewed, given awards
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a quiet week around the
Brussels Legion Branch. The
Homecoming Committee met on
Wednesday evening for the twelfth
time and finalized details on most
events. Nanci Ducharme filled in as
bartender on Saturday for the small
group of Comrades.
This is a reminder about the sign-
up sheet for working at the food
booth at Homecoming.
It will take all Comrades pitching in
to help at least one shift. Call the
Branch if you cannot drop in or
expect a phone call soon.
Homecoming is only two weeks
away.
The executive meeting for the
Branch is being held on Tuesday,
July 18 at 7 p.m. Comrades should
note the change of date.
