Grade 7, UCW serves meal for Hullett graduates
The school year 2011/2012 has
come to a close. Hullett Central
Public School held their Grade 8
Graduation on Tuesday, June 26. It
was an emotional and nostalgic
evening for both parents and the 18graduates. The graduates havecompleted a first level of educationon their road to adulthood and a
career.
The evening began with pictures
and the banquet at the
Londesborough Community Hall
catered by the women of
Londesborough United Church and
served by the Grade 7 class.
Everyone returned to the school
for speeches and awards.
A slide presentation of the
graduates’ time at Hullett Central
Public School was enjoyed by all.
When the school year 2012/2013
begins in September one familiarface will be missing from the halls ofHullett, Mrs. Nancy Pickell.Nancy’s mother says Nancy
wanted to be a teacher from the age
of five and she earned her teaching
degree in Alberta in 1968. She began
her career in a portable in Sarnia
teaching Grade 5. At the
encouragement of her principal
Nancy became a reading specialist
and enjoyed helping pupils in five
different schools in that area for two
years.
She moved to Goderich when she
married and taught at both Huron
Centennial School in Brucefield and
Clinton Public School. Following anumber of years at home raisingchildren Nancy supply taught fornine years. She came to Hullett
Central 14 years ago.
She remarked that her most
memorable teaching moment was
actually this past year when her
Grade 3 class got to Skype with
Chris Hadfield and a class from
Prince Edward Island. She described
the experience as phenomenal.Nancy feels privileged to haveended her career here at HullettCentral where she has appreciated
the way the community supports the
school. She says Hullett will always
hold a special place in her heart.
Retirement means more visits with
her grandchildren on Vancouver
Island, time to travel and camp and
to read.

Sod Busters hold first meeting
By Evan Krebs
The Huron County 4-H Sod
Busters held their first meeting on
June 12 at the Hensall branch of
Thompson's Ltd. This year the club
has many returning members and a
few new ones too.
Marty Krebs, Yard Supervisor, led
the group on a tour of the mill
including the bean cleaning and
bagging sections where the group
got to see the many
machines and the stacking robots in
action.
After the tour, club leaders Brian
McGavin and Carol Leeming went
over what we would be doing for
this club and the meeting dates with
the members. Everybody is excited
to get practising plowing once the
wheat is off.
Our next meeting will be on July
10 at 7 PM at Hyde’s Equipment
south of Hensall. We are looking
forward to a tour of the various
tillage equipment. If you are
interested in joining our club and
learning how to plow, please contact
one of our leaders.
Lucknow man fined $1,000
Kyle Dorscht of Lucknow was
handed over $1,000 in fines
stemming from a Feb. 18 incident in
Howick.
Dorscht pled not guilty to a charge
of over 80 milligrams of alcohol in
100 millilitres of blood, pleading
down to the lesser charge of careless
driving. He also pled guilty to
charges of speeding and driving with
an open container of liquor in the
vehicle.
Police were conducting a radar
patrol in Howick, Grant said, when
they detected a vehicle travelling
through the area at a high rate of
speed.
After determining that the vehicle
was travelling 130 kilometres per
hour in a 90 kilometres per hour
zone, police pulled the vehicle over
to find Dorscht smoking a cigarette.
Immediately, Grant said, police
noticed open, empty beer cans on the
passenger seat and full ones in the
car as well. At first Dorscht denied
drinking, but later admitted to
consuming some alcohol that night.
Police conducted a roadside
breathalyzer test and Dorscht failed,
Grant said.
Hunter found Dorscht guilty and
imposed a fine of $295 (which
included court costs) for the
speeding charge, $175 for the open
container charge and a fine of $750
for the careless driving charge, for a
total of $1,220 in fines. Dorscht was
also given a three-month driving
prohibition where he may only drive
for employment purposes.
Dorscht has six months to pay the
fines.
