Falling behind
The Walton Brewers could be looking at trouble at the end of the season if they continue to
give up games like last week’s 4-2 loss to the Belmore Stingers. (Jim Brown)
Brewers not living up to defending champion moniker
The Walton Brewers are not
playing like the defending Huron
County Fastball League champions,
and, opposing teams are taking
advantage of the way the Brewers
are playing.
Playing at the Walton ball park for
the first time this season, last
Tuesday, the Brewers were handed a
4-2 setback by the Belmore Stingers.
A three-run second inning was all
the runs the Stingers would need to
win the contest, they added an
insurance marker in the sixth inning.
Walton scored single runs in the
fourth and sixth innings.
Scott Cox started on the mound
for the Brewers with Jeff Smith
coming on in relief. They combined
for seven strikeouts.
Barry Young rapped out a pair of
singles for the Brewers. Bruce Pearn
connected for a triple and Scott
McDonald and Scott Leonhardt each
hit a double. Getting single base hits
was Darryl Houston.
Veteran player Scott McDonald
said they just couldn’t hit the ball
and that Belmore pitcher Kris
Wright pitched better than the
Walton hurlers.
“We seem to be very up and down
as a team,” he said. “We can’t find
the ball from one game to the next.”
Because the Brewers are
defending league champions,
McDonald said every other team is
out to beat them. “But, we’re not
playing like we’re the top team right
now,” he concluded.
The Brewers hosted the Brussels
Tigers on Wednesday at the Walton
ball park in a game rescheduled
from June 19. The Brewers are home
to the Wingham Hitmen on Tuesday
beginning at 8 p.m. at the Walton
ball park.
The Tigers are in Fullarton on
Sunday for a 7 p.m. contest against
the A’s. The Tigers host the Goderich
Grizzlies on Wednesday, beginning
at 8:30 p.m. at the Optimist ball park
in Brussels.
The Blyth Barons are in Zurich on
Sunday for a 6 p.m. contest against
the Rangers. On July 11, the Barons
travel to Wingham for a 7:30 p.m.
game against the Hitmen.

Bringing the heat
The pitches were blistering fast and the bats cracked like
thunder when the Londesborough Mites welcomed
Crediton last Tuesday night. The Londesborough squad
also took on Benmiller on July 2 and will host their next
home game on July 31 against their southern neighbours
from Clinton. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club wrapped up the month of June
with a bang. On June 28 the
Thursday night men shattered their
previous record with 88 golfers
hitting the links on a hot muggy
night. Joel Riley, Kent McPherson,
Barry Capling, Don Bone and Steve
Nixon all shot 39 to share low round.
The closest to the pin winners were
Jay Marston and Ken Mathers
with Doug Vanderwoude, Jeff
Lockridge and Brandon Rybicki
taking home prizes for longest putts.
The hidden score winners were
Riley, Greg Tiffin, Ken Saxton,
Dave Ireland, Mark Gibson, Harry
George, Wayne Whytock and Barry
Edwards.
Tuesday, June 26 the senior men
had 29 golfers on a beautiful
morning to play golf. Gerry
Edwards fired a sizzling 37 for low
score as well as claiming the prize
for longest putt. Carl Good took
home first place with Clayt Ruppel
second and Lloyd Lamont third.
Bill Deans was winner of closest to
the pin.
On Wednesday, June 27 the club
hosted the Women’s Shelter
Tournament. The 66 golfers enjoyed
a nine-hole scramble before joining
in the dining lounge for lunch and
prizes. This again was a very
well-run tournament for a great
cause.
This Friday, July 6 the club will be
having its monthly wing night.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
All this week the club is having its
annual kids’ golf clinic. It is fantastic
to see the over 50 children enjoying
the golf camp. Hopefully many of
the kids will become the future of
the club.

North Huron Township Council,
during the June 18 meeting, set a
policy in place regarding the storage
of information attached to the new
biometric entry system now used at
the North Huron Westcast
Community Complex in Wingham.
The system, which uses
fingerprints converted to binary code
as identification, needed a policy put
in place regarding the storage of
information related to individual’s
identities.
It was explained that the
fingerprint information and its
corresponding identification
information are served on separate
servers to prevent abuse.
For extreme circumstances other
methods of entry are still available at
the complex.
RECREATION SURVEY
The results of a survey produced to
determine recreation information in
North Huron was presented to North
Huron Council during their June 18
meeting by Director of Recreation
and Facilities Pat Newson.
Newson said she was pleased with
the intake and that the survey data
would used to help better target the
annually released North Huron
Recreation Guide.
She also stated that, through the
survey, the Recreation and Facilities
Department had discovered that they
could benefit from looking into the
Ontario Games, a province-wide
competition.
BLYTH BASEBALL DIAMONDS
North Huron Township Council
will be receiving a report from
Newson regarding a request to have
the baseball diamonds in Blyth
upgraded that wasn’t dealt with in
time for it to be achieved in 2011.
Council will also be inviting
members of local service clubs and
baseball organizations to council
meetings to deal with the issue.
