It seems like the whirlwind followed up the North Line and continued straight to Brussels on a northern path. Trees were downed at Jack Ryan’s and at Rob McIntosh’s place. It skipped to the bush of the Huron Tract (across from Chris Lee’s) and toppled a few trees near the road. It again hopped over to the next mile and toppled a few trees on Moncrieff Road. A big jump and the wind levelled the new shed being constructed at Mike Cronin’s. Therewere plenty of small and largebranches off many trees in the areaas well. A stepladder, eavestrough and stakes were relocated into our yard from the wind. Andy Vanderveen’s place, near Blyth, was struck badly with a lot of trees damaged. Even the soybean crop was uprooted in places and has had to be replanted. The wind can certainly do a lot of damage in a short time. The fire trucks were called to a fire on North Line on Tuesday evening. A house on the former George Love Jr. property suffered fire and water damage. It has been rented for a few months and occupants were not injured. The Fire Marshal was on the scene the next day to investigate the cause of the fire. A family shower was held at Duff’s United Church for Kelly Ann Dalton last week. She is the bride-to- be of Adam Keys and a wedding is planned for September. The showerwas hosted by her aunts, DonnaMcClure and Dianne McCallum. The church basement wasbeautifully decorated by TinaMcClure in lime green and purple. It looked very festive for the 20 or sofamily members gathered. Big winner Rhonda and Bruce Fischer, left and centre respectively, were the grand-prize winners at the annual Brussels Lions elimination draw last Saturday evening. Brussels Lions Club president Gerry Exel, right, presented the couple a cheque for $4,000. (Photo submitted) Madill Sr. and Jr. Boys Rugby teams perform well Congratulations to the Senior and Junior boys rugby teams from F.E. Madill Secondary School. The Senior boys are WOSSA champions and are heading for provincial play or OSSA in Cobourg this week. Some Brussels area boys include Nic Gowing, Nathan Watson, Shea McLean and Cody Higgins. The Junior boys team won the Huron- Perth Championships in Stratford and are heading to the Barbarian Cup for provincial play in Aurora this weekend. Many of the Brussels area boys on the team include Hayden Ten Pas, Brody Ten Pas, Stuart Higgins, Brock McLean, Arden Coultes, Reece McArter, Bryce Armstrong and Matt and Mike VanWyk. Good luck to both teams in their quest to be provincial champs. Get-well or fast-recovery wishes go out to Kathy Elliott. She has had hip surgery (again) and we wish her well in her recovery period. I’m sure she will be up and around before we know it. Paul and Dianne McCallum held the fourth annual Long Branch Biker Bash this past weekend at their farm. The rainy and cool weather kept some of the bikers from riding, but all that arrived had a good time. There were about 50 brave diehards hit the road for the ride to Neustadt and area. They had a rest break and then travelled back to the McCallum farm. The weather was a little nicer coming home and even the sun tried to peek out for them. The group grew to about 125 for the evening meal and night’s fun. They held a raffle of many donated prizes and raised money for the Sick Kids Hospital of London. It was a good day with many riders coming from London, Kitchener and the surrounding area. It is a gathering of great people to have fun, enjoy a motorcycle ride and raise money for a great cause. The Somers family gathered on Sunday to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of George and Fannie Somers. Ross and Judy Somers had the happy couple out for dinner on May 31 to celebrate the anniversary and then all the family arrived on Sunday. They had around 35 of the family members attending. George and Fannie had five children, Ross, Roger, Rick, Randy and Janice. I asked Fannie why Janice didn’t have an “R” name and she replied” I don’t know – I couldn’t think of one”. Happy anniversary to George and Fannie! Celebrating birthdays this past week and kicking off the month of June include Neil McGavin, Sister Teresa Ryan, Scott Henderson, Kyle Pryce, Patricia Andrades, Jamie Gerber, Bill Humphries, Ernie Lewington, Shelley Coleman, Scott Dalton, Jillian Houston, Jeffrey Parr, Merle Hackwell, Sarah Tipple, Jacob McGavin, Sharon Stephenson, Jim Campbell, Kennedy and MacKenzie Strong, Jesse Wilkinson and Ashley Williamson. By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON Martin back from Laos for visit Wendy Martin has been a busy girl since arriving home. Wendy and her parents, Howard and Alice have been kept busy with driving to visit relatives all over the area. They have made numerous trips to St. Jacobs and Kitchener area, as well as around Brussels. It was nice to say hello to Wendy at Cinnamon Jim’s the other day. Wendy will soon be returning to Laos. We have finally had the much- needed rain for the crops. Gratefully, it has not been a downpour flooding the fields, but an on-and-off gentle rain. You could almost see the corn and beans jump up a couple of inches with the moisture. Traffic delays on Brussels Line have been common this past week, as they have been resurfacing the road. They cover about two kilometres a day and they were in Walton by Thursday evening. They had started on their way back to Brussels on Monday morning and probably will be there by the time you are reading the newspaper. Congratulations to Frank and Grace Dolmage who are grandparents to a big baby boy. The proud parents are Brian and Jess Dolmage and new son, Austin, is welcomed home by sister Shayna. Congrats to all. Neil and Marie McGavin were away for a few days to Picton, in Prince Edward County. There were approximately 35 gather to celebrate the 55-year reunion of Neil’s graduating class of 1957, from the University of Guelph. They enjoyed a great time together, visiting and going out for dinner on Tuesday evening. The McGavins also went to Ottawa to visit with old friends who also celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary lately before returning. Former area resident, Neil Turnbull, is visiting in the area. He is here from Calgary for about 10 days to check over his properties and see old friends. NEWS FROM WALTON Over 300 replies for pork dinner A good crowd of over 30 attended the Holy Trinity Sunday at Duff’s United Church. Roelf and Diety Bos greeted worshippers upon their arrival. Rev. Peter welcomed all. The scripture reader was Patty Banks. There was no anthem this week as the choir is saving their voices for the mass choir this coming weekend for anniversary. Rev. Peter’s sermon was entitled” Of Water and Spirit”. The gifts of offering were accepted by Neil McGavin and Don Baan. The sacrament of Communion was delivered by Monique and Emma Baan and Teresa and Craig Baan. Announcements included that the big weekend is almost here. Our special anniversary celebrating 100 years of the Duff’s United Church building is this weekend. The last anniversary meeting will be held on Tuesday evening and all were invited to attend. RSVPs for the porkchop dinner have numbered over 300, so many people are attending this great weekend planned. If you haven’t replied, we will have enough to feed “some extra”, but a quick call to Neil or Phyllis would be appreciated, just to be sure. Local folks are reminded to drop of a picnic table for use if they can. The extra seating will be very appreciated. A reminder that story boards are to arrive ready to display on Saturday or Sunday, if they haven’t been dropped off already. The Saturday night dance has had an extra feature added. The Brussels Pipe Band will perform at 7 p.m. before the dance outside. Nothing sounds better than the sweet sounds of the pipes in the open air. The guest speaker for the Sunday service is Bob Heywood. “Walton Has Talent” has many confirmed acts, so it should be an enjoyable afternoon following the barbecue. We hope to see lots of familiar faces and many faces from the past to help celebrate Duff’s milestone. HE buys iPads for councillors Huron East Council authorized the purchase of iPads for every member of council at the May 15 meeting. After several months with paperless agendas, the issue returned to the forefront when councillors needed a device to use for their agendas. Going to a paperless agenda, said Treasurer Paula Michiels, will save the municipality $1,700. The initial cost of the purchase of 12 second generation iPads is $4,932, but there was a relatively inexpensive option of upgrading to third generation iPads for a total cost of $5,988. Michiels said the money for the iPads has already been placed in the budget, so there will be no additional impact on the budget. In fact, Michiels said, there will be funds left over with the iPads coming in under budget. Several councillors felt there was no need to purchase second generation iPads when the third generation of the devices was so inexpensive. However, Michiels said the difference between the two is minimal, especially considering all that the councillors will be using them for. Deputy-Mayor Joe Steffler, however, simply wanted to accept Michiels’ report and proceed to purchase the second generation iPads. “Let’s just accept Paula’s recommendation and get on with life,” Steffler said. Councillors passed the recommendation to purchase second generation iPads with each councillor being given the option to upgrade to a third generation on their own, with their own funds, if they so chose. Councillor Nathan Marshall then asked if a councillor who put their own money in to upgrade an iPad would then own the device at the end of the term. The answer was no, but that a payment plan for a councillor to pay the full cost of the device could be put in place if they wanted to in fact own it at the end of their term.
