Winthrop Store closing after more than 40 years
The cool weather of last week
hopefully is all gone and the warmer
weather of spring is upon us. The
spring grain planted a few weeks ago
is up and showing nicely. Farmers
have worked most of their fields and
the corn planting is in full swing.
The lawns are a rich green and most
everyone has had to cut their lawns
at least once. Travelling along the
road, I have seen the beautiful
trillium flowers blooming in the
woods, as well as those nasty yellow
dandelions. There is also the arrival
of babies. I have seen baby bunnies
at my house, baby Canada geese at
the pond, some baby foxes scattering
to hide in a drain, a newborn foal inthe field and numerous baby calves.Yes, spring has sprung!Neil McDonald has been in
Ontario for about 10 days. He stayed
with sister Karin McDonald Calhoun
in Bayfield and was kept very busy.
He has a home in Bayfield that is
being remodelled and he was busy
with landscaping. He helped his
sister out with a few odd jobs and he
spent time here at the McDonald
farms. He spent time cultivating and
helping the men with other field
work. He found time to visit with
many of his old friends of the area
and to go out to dinner with Aunt
Peg. He had a friend from Chatham,
who had been at dentistry school
with him in 1975, spend the day and
he showed Bruce around the Walton
and Bayfield areas. He was a busy
fellow while in Ontario. Neil
returned to Vancouver probably to
have a rest.
Margery Huether returned from
Florida and jumped right into
entertaining. She hosted the birthday
party for Betty Knight who
celebrated her 80th birthday. Thegroup of 14 ladies went toMillington’s in Brucefield andenjoyed a delicious dinner. They
returned to Margery’s home for
birthday cake and ice cream. The
ladies able to join birthday girl Betty
and Margery included Jean Bewley,
Isabel Wheeler, Yvonne Knight,
Nora Stephenson, Marion Smith,
Dona Knight, Betty McCutcheon,
Donna Knight, Merle McIntosh,
Teuni Smith, Mary Morrow and
Margery’s friend Annette.
Enjoying a vacation in Mexico and
the Mayan Riviera were Andy and
Sara Overholt and Mike and
Michelle Dauphin and friends. They
had a beautiful resort, enjoyed great
food, fantastic weather and a great
time. Unfortunately, Mike Dauphin
came down with the flu just after
arriving for a few days, but admitted,
that you can have a good time
watching others.
Our condolences are expressed to
John and MaryLou Driscoll on the
loss of her brother Bill Taylor. He
formerly lived in Varna and our
sympathies to his family. Our condolences to Nick andKelly Marshall on the passing ofNick’s father Elvey Marshall of
Seaforth. Our sympathies to the
family.
The funeral for Ruth Sheill was
held on Saturday at Brussels United
Church. Our condolences to her
family.
The village of Winthrop changed
this week with the closing of the
Winthrop Store. It has been owned
and operated by Doug and Gail
Schroeder for almost 43 years. They
began in 1969, purchasing the store
from the McCluskie family. They
had been married only two weeks
when they began operating the store.
They raised their family of two boys,
Steve and Brad, there. They have
been there to serve the community
any time of the day or night. They
opened early in the morning and
stayed open late at night. It wasn’t
unusual for them to get a call in the
late evening, after closing, because
someone forgot to pick up milk or
bread for the morning lunches. They
had a little bit of everything for
everyone. Groceries, dairy, meats
and cheeses, bread, hardware, candy,
local newspapers, cleaning supplies,
oil and odds and ends that a farmer
might need. They served gas, diesel
and propane, carried barrels, garbage
cans, water barrels, flowers andChristmas trees. They have soldtickets for barbecues, buck and does, church dinners, draw tickets,
entertainment shows for any and all
community events. They have had
the postal outlet for many years and
know most everyone in the area.
They have employed many young
people of the area and gave them
their first jobs. It certainly will be a
change for the customers they have
served over the years and for them to
not meet and greet the many faces
who came through their doors. Our
best for Doug and Gail in their
retirement from the store business
and congratulations for a job well
done for the past 43 years.

4-H club displays bread creations
The Grey Township “Bready
Bunch” 4-H club held its
achievement program on Saturday
morning in Cranbrook. All 19
members along with a couple of
parent volunteers set out from the
centre of the village to collect road
side garbage.
Members were surprised at the
amount collected and the variety of
garbage found. Upon returning to
the Cranbrook Hall, members set out
their bread items they made. Some
of the bread items were: French
bread, cinnamon buns, cheese bread,
nut bread, muffins, bread sticks,
pretzels, teddybear bread, braided
egg bread, spelt bread, whole wheat
bread, corn bread, sourdough
bread and a variety of flavoured
butters.
Members, parents and siblings
enjoyed sampling it all.

Blyth native shown in
award-winning photo
Derek Ruttan, a photographer with
The London Free Press, was
honoured with a National
Newspaper Award on Friday in
Toronto.
His photograph was taken at TD
Waterhouse Stadium during the
Western Ontario Secondary School
Association’s senior boys 100-metre
hurdles. The picture shows Blyth’s
Grant Sparling pulling away from
the pack of other participants
running the event.
Sparling won the gold medal in the
2011 event. He is now attending
Dartmouth College in Hanover, New
Hampshire where he is a member of
the “Big Green” track team. He
placed second in his first hurdles
event at the second meet of the
indoor season. A hamstring injury,
however, forced him to miss the rest
of the outdoor season.
Sparling expects a full recovery,
however, and will participate in track
and field once again this fall.
Ruttan’s two nominations on
Friday represented the second and
third times he had been nominated at
the national level for his sports
photography.
At the same awards, another team
from The London Free Press
received a Citation of Merit for its
photographic coverage of the August
tornado in Goderich. The team was
edged out by coverage of the
earthquake and tsunami in Japan
photographed for The Globe and
Mail.
An article detailing Ruttan’s
win and featuring the picture in
