The Citizen, 2012-04-19, Page 29THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 2012. PAGE 29.Boundary bridges spark debate at countyThe ongoing saga of Boundary
Bridge 25 in South Huron continued
at Huron County Council’s April 11
Committee of the Whole meeting
with several councillors refusing to
commit Huron County tax dollars to
fixing a bridge half in Perth County.
“It’s not our responsibility that
half of the bridge is in another
county,” Ginn said. “It sets a bad
precedent.
“I do not think that Huron County
taxpayers should be paying for the
property of another county.”
Director of Public Works Dave
Laurie says that Huron County has
an agreement with other counties on
boundary bridge repairs, but there is
no agreement between lower tier
municipalities that are in different
counties.
This is an issue that is of particular
concern to Huron East, a
municipality that is home to eight of
the 16 remaining boundary bridges
in the county that will be
downloaded over the next few years.South Huron Mayor GeorgeRobertson said that South Huron has
held steady on its position on the
bridge and that his municipality is
not happy about the downloading.
“We don’t want it and we won’t
take it,” Robertson said.
Howick’s Art Versteeg
sympathized with Robertson, saying
that it shouldn’t be Huron’s
responsibility 100 per cent.
“We shouldn’t be paying to repair
bridges in Perth County,” Versteeg
said. “There’s no way we should be
building bridges in Perth County.
That’s just wrong.”
Warden Bernie MacLellan said
that unfortunately if the county feels
the bridge needs to be repaired,
which it does, the other parties (such
as South Huron and Perth County)
don’t necessarily need to agree with
Huron County.
“If we don’t agree on both sides of
the fence,” MacLellan said, “we
have to either pay it or do it.”
Versteeg said it would be
worthwhile to investigate a potentialbylaw for the future with the coststhat are going to be incurred incoming years.
With the number of bridges that
will be downloaded from the county
to Huron East over the next fewyears, Laurie said costs will easilyexceed $1 million before they are allrepaired.
“For that kind of money, we can
change the bylaw,” Versteeg said.
In the end, the motion to downloadthe bridge to South Huron and agreeon a one-time cash payment for the remediation of the bridge to
be paid to South Huron was
carried.
