Experts from across the North American Swine industry made an impressive line-up of speakers for the 2012 London Swine Conference (LSC). The 12th annual event boasted record attendance with over 350 participants on March 28 and 29. Under the theme “A Time for Change” the program highlighted change in available technology, economic conditions and the level of public concern with the welfare of farm animals. Over 20 excellent speakers from Ontario, across Canada and the United States filled the new conference format. For the first time topics were divided by production type, targeting sow production on day one and grow-finish operators on day two. Attendees had the opportunity to network with a cross-section of the pork industry. Overall, comments were very positive. Participants stated that the conference was “very informative” with “a wide variation of topics” and were “impressed by the intense knowledge of the speakers”. The LSC program covered practical pork production, including the future of barn design ideas for alternative feed ingredients and production data benchmarking. Speakers challenged participants to be ready for a changing business environment by making research based decisions, using on-farm trials properly and knowing their key financial data. Presentations included updates on the new marketing environment in Ontario and a thought provoking session about being an advocate for modern agriculture to a public that is more and more distant from the farm. The planning committee extends their thanks to Industry Partner level sponsors Agriculture Management Institute, Better Pork Magazine, Elanco, Gentiporc, Hypor, Reproquest, Total Swine Genetics and Zinpro/Jefo, along with 30 industry sponsors. With their strong support, LSC continues to be one of the largest education events for the swine industry in Ontario. Congratulations to Gerard Van Den Boogaard, the winner of free registration to the 2013 London Swine Conference. The conference proceedings will soon be available online at www.londonswine conference.ca/proceedings along with proceedings from all past conferences. The London Swine Conference began in 2001, and continues as a joint effort of the University of Guelph, Ontario Pork, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ontario Pork Industry Council.
