Hallelujah! Happy Easter! On
Sunday churches and synagogues
celebrated the best religious holiday
of the year. Easter! This spring time
celebration reminds us that we are
not alone, that there is life after
death and that in life there is hope.
So worship services here, were full
of colour, life and joy. This, after the
week of pondering the story of the
cross and the tomb, so once again
Easter Sunday was a time of great
joy.
What great weather for a weekend
with visitors. Sunny and bright days,
just makes holiday weekends so
much more enjoyable. Hopefully
everyone had their fill of family,
food and fun. The larger the family
the more challenging it is to get
everyone together for festivities, but
we keep on trying. Visitors were in
abundance in the village, the church
and seen out strolling and enjoying
family and friends.
Once again we’re into the food.
The stewards at the United Church
held their holiday bake sale on
Saturday and were pleased with the
donations of great looking baking,
candy and preserves. A happy crowd
came forth to another time of
everybody wins – great Easter
baking to share at home, the church
had a nice profit and the bakers
enjoyed sharing their skills. Thanks
to everyone.
If you need something to do on
Wednesday afternoons 1:30 to 3
p.m., come to Links at the United
Church for good conversation and a
few games. Don’t forget about Soup
and More on Fridays 11:30 a.m. to 1
p.m. for good food and new friends.
Take part in community, we all win.
Enjoy the new breath of spring
and don’t forget to wash your hands.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

Congratulations to them both.
The month of April has some very
significant days in Canadian Armed
Forces history. It is the 95th
anniversary of the Canadians’
capture of Vimy Ridge. It was from
April 9-12, 1917 that the Battle of
Vimy Ridge took place. It is
considered the turning point of
World War I. It was considered to be
the greatest battle the Canadian
Forces encountered. Thousands of
Allied troops had tried to capture the
Ridge, but to no avail. The offence
was turned over to Sir Julian Byng
who commanded the Canadians into
the battle. The Canadians suffered
great losses in the battle, 24,000
Canadians died, but a ferocious
attack by the 85th Highlanders
Battalion of Nova Scotia drove the
Germans back.
By the end of the day the Ridge
was in Canadian hands and over the
next three days, the rest of the ridge
fell. The Canadians would never let
it go.
Historians say that this was the
turning point for Canada, no longer
being considered a colony but an
independent country. The Vimy
Memorial erected in 1936, by
Canada on the Ridge, stands as a
testament that the battlefield
remains a site of memory,
mourning, victory and
commemoration for all Canadians to
remember and be proud of our
heritage.
