Maintaining programs and services, keeping taxes competitive, attracting economic development and supporting our business community will help us retain our residents as well as attract more residents and investment. What you think matters to us. This is our community and your future. Let’s continue to work together. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2012. PAGE 27. On Saturday, April 14 the Blyth United Church Women (UCW) will hold their 18th annual Women’s Day Out event. The event will feature presentations from the Huron County Community Emergency Coordinator Linda Rotteau about emergency preparedness and a presentation by the author of one of The New York Time’s 2010 best new cookbooks The Happy Baker: A Girl’s Guide to Emotional Baking and Blyth-native Erin Bolger accompanied by entertainment. Local entertainers include the Contemporary Dance Studio from Goderich, the Almost Famous Players from Wingham and area, Rhythm and Shoes with Sherry McCall and Anne Elliott portraying Granny Pasqually with special guest Les Cook. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” organizer Lorna Fraser said. “It gives us a chance to make money and a chance for women to sit and relax.” Fraser said that women are so busy that the chance to relax and be entertained is something theytreasure. The event features coffee andmuffins in the morning after the 9 a.m. registration and a meal served mid-day. While there isn’t a set-in- stone schedule as of yet, Fraser said that Bolger and Rotteau will be making their presentations in the morning along with the Contemporary Dance Studio. The rest of the acts will be held after lunch. The mid-day meal, which is typically a cold meal comprised of salads, will be served by a catering crew of mostly men to give the women a chance to relax Fraser said. Bolger told The Citizen during an interview last week that she’s always excited and a little nervous to attend events like this. “I do guest appearances like this and chat about my journey and experiences and it’s always exciting,” she said. “There are always a lot of questions about self- marketing and self-publishing and how I got started.” Bolger said that a lot of her presentation revolves around how her success has come to be. “A lot of questions look at self- marketing and how I get myself out there,” she said. “I tell people that it really has to come naturally. You have to be comfortable doing it.” Recently Bolger has been featured at the London Women’s Lifestyle Show and a similar event at Kitchener and she said that people usually want to hear more about the hows of The Happy Baker brandthan the what. She said she welcomes everyoneat the Women’s Day Out to bring their questions as there isn’t a lot she isn’t comfortable answering. “People don’t have to be shy, I will be very honest,” she said. “I will answer pretty much everything.” She said that ability to be open and speak in front of people is something she has had to develop. She tries to impress upon people how important being open and comfortable is for entrepreneurs looking to create their own brand. “Owning a business is about facing fears,” she said. “I’m fine on television. I can talk there until the cows come home, but when I’m in front of people I feel like I’m back in Grade 7 doing public speaking.” She said facing that fear is one way she has pushed herself and business owners have to push themselves to become successful. Bolger said she looks forward to events like Women’s Day Out because they’re great networking opportunities not just for the presenters but for everyone involved. “It’s amazing how many opportunities you can miss out on if you don’t attend events like this,” she said. “You can meet a lot of people and learn to appreciate their goals and works and that appreciation leads to greater things. You have to look at these events and think outside the box and realize that, if you have a future project, this is the perfect time to talk to peopleabout it.”Tickets for the event are availablefrom Joann MacDonald at 519-523- 9274, Radiant Life Christian Books in Goderich or The Gift Chest in Wingham in advance for $22 and some will be available at the door.
