The return of cooler weather had
everyone shivering, but at least we
didn’t have to get out the snowboots.
The beautiful spring flowers that had
bloomed were a sad sight at my
house, especially my miniature
tulips. A very short showing for
them. The end of March was
forecast as to go out like a lion, but I
would say the day wasn’t bad at all.
As we head into April, we hope for
good weather and a good planting
season for the farm crops.
There was sad news on the streets
of Brussels last week. Warren
“Gabby” Hayes passed away in a
London Hospital on the weekend.
Although many people will not
know Warren, he was a regular
fixture on main street. He would be
seen walking his four-legged friend,
Oliver, for Murray and Ruth Lowe
several times a day. He had a heart of
gold his friends say and would do
anything for you if he could. A
lovely memorial service was held at
the Brussels Mennonite Fellowshipon Thursday afternoon with manykind words of remembrances
spoken by his friends. Our
condolences to his family.
Returning from a trip across “the
pond” are Murray and Sherry
McCall, Doug and Shawna, Jaeden
and Kolten O’Neill, Jack and Donna
Storey and Marion Hunt. They spent
a week in Courchevel, Switzerland
visiting with John and Marci McCall
MacBain, Alivia and Indre. They
enjoyed beautiful weather and spent
time skiing and snowshoeing. They
had fresh snow after arriving and
were able to build a snow slide,
something they did not do here in
our Ontario weather this year!
Bob and Rose Robinson have
moved into their new home on
McKillop-Hullet Road a couple of
weeks ago. They are enjoying their
new surroundings and the children
of Jeff and Erin Robinson are happy
to have grandma and grandpa so
close.
What a difference a week can
make. The Glanville house was
taken down last Monday and by
Monday evening, it was cleaned up.
The basement area was cleaned up
and the footings were poured by
Tuesday night. Basement forms
were up and in place by Wednesday
evening and the walls were poured.
By Friday night, the forms were
gone and it looks like a nice
foundation for the new house. It’samazing what can be accomplishedin a week!
It was happy birthday time for my
old friend Anna McNichol. Her first
party was with her children at the
Dinner Bell in Clinton on her
birthday. Her children able to attend
included Marg Lamont, Dianne
Miller, Gary, Larry, Murray, Jim,
Neil and Don McNichol. The second
party was with her granddaughters.
Anna has many grandsons, but it was
the seven special granddaughters
who came to celebrate. They
brought a lovely potluck dinner for
them and had a wonderful afternoon
visiting with grandma. The
afternoon was made extra special
with the announcement that a great
grand child will arrive later this year.
What a great gift for Anna for her
88th birthday!
The end of March signals the end
of the Cranbrook Dart Club. March
28 ended the 2011-2012 season for
darting. They had an eventful
evening starting with a delicious
roast beef dinner and refreshments
for the 22 team players. Top scorers
for the season were Karen Bowles
with 140 and Ern Lewington with
160. Jane Zwep was presented with
a small trophy to signify her perfect
score of 180 earlier this year, which
can be passed on. They presented a
beautiful plant to Hein and Jose
Kiujpers, who have left Moncreiff
Road and moved to the Strathroyarea. They are going to operate theirown farrow-to-finish farm. They
have been playing with the
Cranbrook Dart Club for four years
and will be missed as good players
and neighbours. The club wished the
family all the best in their new
surroundings.
The group played some fun darts
and had Karen Bowles, Teuni Smith
and Frank Workman finding
themselves skunked in one of their
games during the evening. Ending
the great season and the fun-filled
night was Sandra Josling taking
top honours with a high of 101
and George Zwep hitting a high
140.
The congregation of Duff’s United
Church was small gathering for
Palm/Passion Sunday. Members and
guests were welcomed by Ross and
Margaret Bennett. The Lent
Meditation was read by Teresa Baan
and the last candle of the Lenten
lights was extinguished. Jesus
entered Jerusalem on a donkey and it
is the signal of the beginning of
Holy Week. Jesus knew he would
face many challenges during his last
days but he was following the path
of God. The congregation received
palms when they arrived and the
palms were waved. It was to signify
the opening of ourselves to God’s
love and grace. The scripture
reading was by Teresa Baan. The
choir sang Hosanna-He Comes in
the Name of the Lord as the anthem.
Rev. Peter’s sermon was entitled
‘Jesus’ Joyful Entry into Jerusalem’
the offering was taken by Neil
McGavin and Kaleigh and Chad
McCallum.
Announcements included Holy
Week services are at Brussels United
Church Monday until Wednesday.
Maudy Thursday service at St.
John’s Anglican at Noon. Good
Friday service is at Duff’s United at
9:30 a.m. Easter Sunday service is at
regular time and it will also be
confirmation. Easter Sunday is also
the last Sunday that donations of
loose change or bills, as well as food
banks donations, for the Sierra
Leone school are being collected.
There is a planning meeting for
the 100th anniversary of the church
on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Parrish and Heimbecker of Walton
held a customer grower information
meeting on Friday at the Walton
Hall. They had a good crowd of
around 40 to listen to speakers Moe
Aginstno on markets, Greg Stewart
from OMAFRA on Starter Fert in
Corn and James Vanderslikke of
P&H on the fertilizer market.
Following the meeting the group
enjoyed chicken wings and fries for
lunch. The lunch was provided by
the Walton Hall Board and prepared
by Rick and Scott McDonald.
Surprise, surprise, surprise! A
gathering of family and friends at
the Arden Park Hotel in Stratford
was not what it turned out to be for
a surprised Don Dalton. The group
gathered to celebrate Don’s special
birthday a couple of weeks early and
it came as a complete surprise to
him. Wife Pat and children including
Carla with husband Eric and
children Jordan, Brody and Gerrid
with wife Val and children Braelynn,
Sydney and MacKenzie and Joel
were all in attendance. They were
joined by Walton-area friends Lorne
and Bonnie Glanville, Ken and
Betty Glanville, Clyde and Cathy
McClure, Val Shortreed, Gord and
Irma Pryce and Neil and Marie
McGavin along with others friends
from the Wingham and Bayfield
area.
The group of nearly 35 enjoyed a
delicious dinner and then an evening
of socializing at the hotel. Many of
the guests stayed over so the party
continued on. Those who stayed
over joined together for a nice
morning brunch. Congratulations
Don, even though a little early and
enjoy your last couple of weeks in
the 50s!
We send our best wishes and get-
well wishes to Marianna Ryan and
Mavis Dalton, who are both patients
in Seaforth Community Hospital.
Our condolences to the family of
Beryl Smith, who passed away this
week. She will be missed by her
children Wayne, Sharon, Kim and
Joan and their families. Beryl was a
lovely lady whom I had the pleasure
of knowing for a few years. She was
a customer at the shop and we
always had fun conversations when
she was around. She would always
tease that she had baked something,
but forgot to bring some for me! Our
sympathies to the family and the
extended Smith family.
Gerry and Anne Ryan, Jim and
Betty Ryan, Greg, Trudy and Amber
Ryan and Jeff and Maddy and Joe
and Rhonda Ryan travelled to
Toronto to join birthday celebrations
for Joan (Ryan) McDonald. Joan
and husband Don live in Montreal
but the party to celebrate Joan’s 80th
birthday was held at the home of
Grant and Monica McDonald in
Toronto. They enjoyed a lovely
afternoon of hors d’oeuvres, then
dinner and a lovely social evening
visiting. Bob and Joan travelled to
our area to visit with Jack and
Marianna later Sunday and Monday.
Happy birthday to Joan!
We have heard from Tanner and
Loni Leslie and their trip to
Australia. They report that it is very
hot in the land down under! They
have been at Fraser Island which is
the largest sand island. It is very
lovely except for the massive spiders
they have. Loni reports that she
almost had a heart attack when she
saw the first one. They swam in
Lake MacKenzie, which is a fresh
water lake that looks very similar to
the Caribbean. The sand was the
whitest of white and the water
crystal clear. Beautiful. They left
Hervey Bay and are heading to
Cairns. It was going to be a 12-hour
bus ride and they are spending their
last 10 days in that area of Australia.
They have been away eight weeks
and the time has flown by. They
have more adventures ahead and we
hope we hear from them again
before they come home.
Celebrating birthdays to finish up
March are Connor Den Dekker,
Nicole Williamson, John Baan,
Brandy Leslie and Jack McLachlan.
The month of April and April Fool’s
babies include Lily Fincham, Matt
Lee, Pam Cummings and Shirley
Clark, as well as Peter Bennett,
Mary McCall, Susan Yan Yu-
Watson, Krista Shortreed, Shirlee
Groothius, Duncan Wey, Gary
Bennett, Nate Fritz, David Baan and
Colleen Bromley. Happy Birthday to
all.
