(Vicky Bremner photo) Groundhog Day forthcoming It’s rodent checking time. How the groundhog got to this level of influence in human life is truly quite amazing. The prominence of the Wiarton festival and the success rate of seeing the shadow defy all odds, so good for them. The shenanigans are still happening in the village, keep alert and be sure to report any unusual activity to the OPP or Crime Stoppers. Broken articles and graffiti are irritating but it’s the mental issues of destruction, a need to damage property that are hard tocomprehendBirthdays, especially winterbirthdays are a great way to enjoy the days of January. The Vicar of Dibley, oh I meant the Pastor of Brussels United celebrated her birthday with friends last week. Stories are always a good part of every birthday and able to join this year was retired Archie McDonald and friend Rosemary. Life experiences, no matter how calm or bizarre give the best entertainment. So here’s to another year Sandra with fun, friends and food. The weather on Saturday was wonderful. Blowing snow and not too cold. It’s January and time to enjoy the white stuff. Looking ahead, if you want some fun and a bargain, get your ticket for the Valentine’s dance at Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre for Feb. 11 from Joan or Audrey. It will cost you more if you wait untilthat night.Take care.Bye now, Betty G.W. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Mait-Side Orchard Apples, Apples, Apples Most grades and varieties Apple Butter & Honey Fresh pressed cider weekly Open Monday - Saturday West end of Brussels 519-887-6883 By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 A NOTE FROM BETTY At the Branch Snow hurts numbers By Jo-Ann McDonald The general meeting of Brussels Legion Branch was held on Tuesday evening with only six executive members attending. The usual business was conducted with reports from committee heads attending. The catering committees reports one function booked for February and groups wishing fish fry events this year have begun to book. There are already six events booked at this time. Comrade Elaine Nichol is still a patient in Oakville Hospital. The Thursday night darts had only a few players in attendance due to the weather. Winners were: first, Gord Jacklin; high, Gord, 118, Sharon Robbins, 107. The Friday night supper crowd who trust whatever is on the menu will be good, were happy to enjoy a roast beef dinner. This week will be ham and scalloped potatoes. The inclement weather on Saturday resulted in a very small crowd for euchre. There were four- and-a-half tables of players, so the chances of being a winner were high. Winners were: first, Frank and Betty Hulley, 80; second, Ed Stewart and Glen Sellers, 75; third, Bill Coleman and Grace Corbett, 74; lone hands, Charlie Shaw and John Pollard, five; low, Hazel McGonigle and Faye Dalrymple, 50. Euchre is every two weeks. The Branch had four Comrades participating in Zone Mixed Double and Mixed Team darts on Saturday. Comrades Ron Schmidt and Daisy Wong were the winners of the Mixed Doubles and joined forces with Comrades Ken and Linda Bird to finish second in the mixed team darts. They played in Goderich and it was a very long day with play starting at 11 a.m. and not finishing until nearly 10 p.m. There was great participation in spite of the poor weather. Congratulations to our Comrades who advance to District play. The Sunday night dance crowd must have been fearful of the weather as less than 50 attended. There was plenty of room for dancing and lots of lunch for all. The music provided by the Red Rascal Band was great as usual and the next dance will feature the Country Versatiles. Londesborough store owners speak to Horticultural society The Brussels and District Horticultural Society held its January meeting on Monday, Jan. 23 at the Brussels Library. The meeting opened the singing of O’ Canada. Mary Douma read a poem entitled “Feeding the Birds” and then introduced the speakers, Jen and Tim Elliott, owners of Nature’s Nest in Londesborough. Jen gave the group an overview of their business and Tim showed the many different kinds of bird feeders that he had on display. He spoke of lifetime warranty bird feeders, easy cleaning bird feeders, suet feeders, fly-through feeders and squirrel- proof feeders. If you want plenty of birds place your bird feeder as close to trees as possible. If you are hanging your feeder on a tree limb make sure it is four feet from the ground. If you are hanging a feeder on a steel rod keep it four feet from your deck or a railing because of squirrels. Tim had many different kinds of bird seed mixtures on display. The best bird seed has a lot of oil seeds in it, such as black oil sunflower seeds. Wheat and or/oats are often added as fillers so choose your bird seed wisely. Anti-squirrel seed is popular. Tim also presented many different kinds of suet cakes and a four- seasons (heated) bird bath. Hummingbird feeders should be filled around Mother’s Day with four parts boiling water and one part sugar. Do not add food colouring. Sharon Freeman thanked the Elliotts for their interesting talk. President Phyllis Mitchell presided over the business part of the meeting. In the absence of secretary Lois Lee, Leona Armstrong read the minutes of the last two meetings, followed by the correspondence and the treasurer’s report. Phyllis called for volunteers or motions for a President and Vice- President with no results. An executive meeting to plan the programs for the coming year will be held at Phyllis Mitchell’s home on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 1:30 p.m. Several lucky draws were made with Yvonne Knight winning the beautiful bird feeder donated by the Elliotts. The Elliotts also donated a bag of bird seed to every person present. Twenty-six memberships were collected. Anyone interested in joining the Horticultural Society please pay $5 to treasurer Leona Armstrong who can be reached at 519-887-6753. At least 50 memberships are required in order to obtain a grant from the Province of Ontario. Happy birthday was sung to Leona Armstrong and she was presented with a potted hyacinth. Laura Barbour and Donna Knight served a very tasty lunch. When you need to get the job done ~ Call us! CONSTRUCTION LTD.
