EDGEWOOD Miss Gerty McKnight spent the week-end with her parents in St. Marys. Mrs. Suchard’s car took fire while she was driving it on Sunday afternoon. Miss Florence Armstage is out of school for a while with eye trouble. Thursday morning Mr. Mid­ dleton had a run away with his horses but escaped injury. Miss D. We are very sorry to report that Mrs. Ernest V.odden was taken to the hospital in London on Friday of last week. We- hope for a very speedy recovery. Exeter SOLICITORS GLADMAN & COCHRANE Exeter Surprise Party A pleasant surprise birthday party took place last Saturday afternoon for Mrs. M. Amy when her niece, Mrs. L. Belan­ ger, of Pheonix, Aria., who is staying with her, invited a num­ ber of neighbors and friends. After spending a while with soc­ ial chat they enjoyed a tew games and sang “Happy Birth­ day". Mrs. Amy responded by saying it was a complete sur­ prise to her and thanked them for their kind wishes and for the Jovely gifts. A sumptuous lunch was served including tea sandwiches, icecream, birthday cake and other delicacies. All went out on the lawn and had their picture taken. Before leav­ ing Mrs. R. McInnis moved a vote of thanks to Mrs. Belanger and Mrs. Willard, who served the lunch, and for the wonder­ ful afternoon and to Mrs. Har­ rison and Mrs- Mathers for their kind assistance. Womens Missionary Society The /Women’s Missionary Soc­ iety of the Hensall United Church held their annual Birth­ day party in the Sunday School on Friday evening- at 8.30 p.m. The school room was beautiful­ ly decorated with spring flowers Members of the Hillsgreen and Goshen Line organizations were the guests. The meeting opened by singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. The president, Mrs. W. B. Cross, presided and extended a hearty welcome to the guests. The scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Albert Shir­ ray after which Mrs. E. Geiger led in prayer. A beautiful piano solo played by Mrs. Fred Apple­ by "was much enjoyed. Miss Vel­ ma Ferguson gave a splendid reading entitled ‘If you .were God and God were you". Mrs. Hedden and Mrs. Geo. Hess favoured with a vocal duet ac­ companied by Miss Gladys Luk­ er at the .piano. Rev. Mahoney, of Exeter, gave two splendid musical selections on the ac- cordian. Hymn “In ChfTst There is no East or West” was sung followed by a reading by Miss Ellis entitled ‘Rev. Jt>hn Smith’s Sermon”. Misses Audrey Walsh and Marlene Petskie favoured with a vocal duet. Miss Gladys Luker contributed a beautiful piano soln. Miss Velma Fergu­ son gave a reading entitled “St Peter at the Gate". The guest speaker, Rev. Mahoney, kof Exe­ ter, gave an interesting address. •The meeting concluded by sing­ ing “Jesus Shall Reign" and Rev. Mahoney pronounced the Benediction. Refreshments were served. Anthony, of Exeter, oc­ cupied the pulpit here on Sab­ bath last, in the absence of Rev Mac Williams. Rev. Anthony has a wonderful memory and preach­ es a wonderful sermon for his age. A wonderful sight for the children recently was the huge bulldozer which was making the excavation for the cellar for the new home of Mr. Gardiner. It would .push out trees and huge shovel fulls of earth, a great saving of work for the men and saves time. Mr. Gard­ iner has chosen a lovely spot for his new home on north Main st, to retire. The funeral service of Mr. Daniel Oestreicher, who passed away Monday, May 24 at his residence, was held Thursday of last week. Rev. A. E. Pletch of St. Jacobs, Ont., and Rov. J. V. Dahms, of Crediton, conduct­ ed the Memorial services The private service at the home was followed by a public service in Zion Church, Crediton. Inter­ ment was made in the local Eva angelical cemetery. Dan Oestrei­ cher was of a quiet unassuming makeup a friend to everyone. Three nephews and three great nephews acted as pallbearers; namely, Messrs. Samuel, Aaron, William Oestreicher; William Brown, Carl Oestreicher and Dr. Donald Oestreicher.
