in the overtime session after
coming from behind in the ^ast
three minutes of regulation

nigh Vs 7-5 verdict was taken in
by the largest crowd to ever
jam the Exeter Arena some
1,800 in all. Nearly 300 fans
had to be turned away.
In ,the first game at llderton
the Lucan Irish edged the home
team 5-4 while in Exeter llder
ton came back to win 4-1.
Both teams put up a clean,
hard fought struggle in the de
ciding tilt that had the railbirds
on edge for the full seventy
minutes of hockey, ,Lucan three
times came from behind and in
the second period took a handy
two-goal leads before the players
skated off for their second well-
earned breather.
In the finale, however, the
Irish couldn't hang on. The II-
derton squad scored early in the
period and with less than, three
minutes to go potted the equal
izer to send the game into over
time.
In the extra period llderton
scored two goals that sent them
into further W.O.A.A, ‘B’ play

early in the second when Ward’s

minute Gerry Paul went through
the llderton squad single-hand
ed to put the teams on even
terms for the second time.
Paul took the puck away
from one of his rivals and clear
ed out to Chown to put the Irish
in the lead for the first time at
the 7 minute mark. Then llder
ton went up on the attack and a
Shantz to Carmichael play again
squared the two teams at 4-4.
However the Irish on goals by
Paul and Stretton jumped into
a two goal lead before going in
to the third.
R, Evans .and Loft made the
play for Ilderton’s first goal of
the third with R. Evans doing
the sharpshooting. At the 17:23

THREE POINTS are all that
separated the local lassies from
a W.O.S.S.A, *‘B” championship
last Saturday in the basketball
finals at London. In the prelim
inaries, Exeter trimmed Aylmer
33-9 but in the evening the
locals dropped a close 16-13 de
cision to the same squad that
put them out last season.

THEY EVEN piled them in on
the rafters and they peeped in
■through the vent windows and
the back door Monday night, as
some 1,800 fans jamed the Exe
ter Arena for a record crowd to
get a glimpse at the deciding
tilt between llderton and Lucan.
« * * *
Although the ice was slights
soft, the match was a ding-dong
battle from start to finish. Un
fortunately, the Lucan puck
chasers threw away a two-goal
lead in the third period and lost
out in overtime. This group’s
popular B representatives have
thus been eliminated and llder
ton will go on into further play
downs.* * * *
THE EXETER squad came
back to win two straight from
Parkhill last week and will now
meet the winner of the Welles
ley-Southampton series which
will be played this week. Souta-
ampton, Monday night, won the
third and deciding game with
Wingham.« « # «
AT TIME of writing a benefit
game is being arranged for the
players’ fund. An announcement
may appear on the back page.
Local fans are asked to give
this their support.

WHEN ONE SEES the way
the Lucan and llderton followers
back their team, it certainly is
a poor show the support the
local squad receives from their
home-town fans. Exeter is big
ger than any of these other
places and while the district
fans appear to be in regular at
tendance the fans right here'in
Exeter have been very poor in)
their support of their team.
Let’s make up for it, Exeterites,
in the final round of the play
offs and in the benefit game,
if played.

with a 6-4 verdict ou Saturday
night. The first game ended in a
5-5 tie, All three matches were
played at the Exeter Arena.
There was no doubt about
Thursday night's ,6-3 win. The
locals had the puck mastery for
most of the contest. After Sang-

Trites, Shaw and D. Brintnell
worked together on the first
counter with right winger Trites
catching the hemp. In less than
a minute Doug Brintnell got the
draw from a face-off in centre
and beat Gibbs with a long shot,
Exeter kept up the attack in
the second and widened their
lead by a 4-1 margin. Ryckman
sent Trites coasting in ,on top of
Gibbs to beat the agile goalie.
The hard working Stire shot in
the fourth marker when a Park
hill defenceman cleared the
puck out to him

The third was
fair with Griffeth
Sturdevant’s rebound and Exe
ter retaliating on Ryckman’s
second goal on a two-way play
with Bill Tuckey. Then it was
Parkhill’s turn when Griffeth
sent Yelle in the clear on a rink-

near the end of the period when
Doug Brintnell and. Ryckman

Waun took Yelle’s passout and
Yelle and McLeod worked a two-

square the count again,
Exeter’s first line accounted
for their fourth goal before the
bell rang at the end of the first
when .Shaw and Trites again
worked together. This time it
was Shaw who beat Gibbs.
In a complete reversal of
hockey Parkhill scored the only
goal of the second which sent
the teams into the third all tied
up at 4-4. Yelle dished the
