(Mark Royall photo) Like many young boys in the area, James Young Houston liked to play hockey and baseball. He grew up on the family farm outside the village of Auburn on the Nile Road. James enrolled in the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph with hopes of continuing a life of farming, but then a World War changed his plans. On Feb. 21, 1941 at the age of 18 James travelledto London, Ontario where heenlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After doing his flight training at Camp Borden, attending Wireless School in Montreal and finally finishing Bombing/Gunnery School in Mount Joli, Quebec, James received his wings on Aug. 15, 1942. By early November, he was in England and after a couple of initial postings he settled in with the RCAF #405 Squadron. James’ family kept in touch with him while he was overseas.
