The Citizen, 2013-09-26, Page 28After more than a year of work,
Monday, Sept. 23 marked the
official induction of the Brussels
Leo Club charter.
The group, which gives youth the
opportunities to reach out, support
and get involved in their community
while having fun was the result of
work between a group of motivated
young people as well as Lions Club
members like the new group’s Leo
Advisor Paul Nichol. It was
sponsored by the Brussels Lions.
Led by Leo President Seth Nichol,
Vice-President Sean Mitchell,
Secretary Sarah Mitchell and
Treasurer Emily Mitchell, the group
has been fundraising alongside the
Lions for the past year to prepare for
officially becoming a club.
Seth explained that the group has
some funds raised and will soon
pick a project to help their
community grow.
The group helped with the Lions
Elimination Draw, as well as, with
the help of the Lions, hosting their
own barbecue fundraisers at
Brussels Foodland and the Brussels
Farmers’ Market.
Paul said he has taken a lot away
from the group so far.
“It’s a privilege being the Leo
advisor really,” he said. “I’m
learning a lot from these kids. It’s a
humbling experience.”
Former Brussels Lions President
and current Lions member Paul
Mutter said if the past is any
indication, the group should fare
well.
“We had a great turnout of
potential Leos when we first started
meeting,” he said, adding the
parents were also great to have out.
Mutter also explained the group
was really born out of an idea
suggested by current Brussels Lions
President Gord Mitchell.
The club is a re-chartered club as
there was one in Brussels 25 years
ago, however, it was reported this is
the first new Leo club in District A-
9, which spans from Mitchell in the
south to Ferndale in the North and
from Lake Huron in the west to
Orangeville and Amaranth in the
east.
The club joins the ranks of the
more than 5,700 Leo Clubs world-
wide with a mandate to help
members develop leadership
through participating in projects that
enrich their community.
The group was presented with its
charter document which included a
list of the charter members who are:
Colin Barbour, Scott Dolmage,
Chris Exel, Leanne Exel, Jenna
Hopper, Mitchell McKee, Taylor
McKee, Emily Mitchell, Sarah
Mitchell, Sean Mitchell, Amanda
Morrison, Seth Nichol, Jasmine
Vader and Timothy Waechter.
The Leo Club will meet every first
and third Monday of the month at
the Brussels Business and Cultural
Centre starting at 8 p.m. The
meetings will include both a
business meeting and recreational
fun. The group is open to youth ages
12 to 17 and anyone interested in
joining can contact Seth at 519-525-
3338 or seth_nich13@
