The Citizen, 2013-09-26, Page 12PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2013. Local plowmen compete against weather at IPM
The weather this past week has
again been a very mixed bag.
Beautiful weather for the early days
of the International Plowing Match
(IPM) and for the Brussels Fall Fair.
A good crowd at the fair, but some
disappointed children with no
midway. A series of events caused
the midway group to cancel their
attendance. The Agricultural Society
did their best to have the bouncy
houses in place for the Tuesdayevening. Many of the children had agreat time and parents saved money.
Maybe, it’s a sign that some other
“good, old fashioned” entertainment
is a way to go. Ideas are always
appreciated by members of the
Agricultural Society, so contact
them if you have an idea!
We went to the IPM on Thursday
and it was a beautiful day. I had only
a few hours to look around, but we
covered every road. We saw the
dancing tractors for the first time and
they were amazing. The tight turns
and the intricate patterns of square
dancing calls they follow is great.
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson
was the caller that afternoon and she
said that they are seven of the
original members with one new one
since they started at the Teeswater
IPM. We will admit to not going into
every tent to see the displays, only
some, but we were there to hearKayla Bishop’s speech. Well done! The other highlight was the show by
the Snowbirds. Very noisy, but very
good. They were amazing with the
precision flying and were quite
worth seeing. We supported the
Mitchell Legion, Branch 128 Bacon
burger booth for lunch and saw the
line-up for the Perth County
food booth was very long each time
by. Our local fellow Jeff Cardiff
and his crew must have been kept
very busy. We ran into many other
local folks enjoying the match as
well that day. Unfortunately, the
weather did not hold for the IPM
and Friday was very wet in the
morning and Saturday the match
site was even wetter and they
had to cancel the day. Safety for all
comes first, but a disappointment for
the organizing committee from
Perth. It was announced that
vendors could enter the property onSunday, with some conditionsapplying, to try and get their sites
cleaned up.
Many of our local plowman
participated at the match and did
well. I understand Brian McGavin
and Paul Dodds both finished third
in their respective classes. Scott
Baan finished fifth and Craig Baan
finished seventh in their classes.
There are others that I did not get to
speak with but hopefully they did
well. Congratulations to all.
The final races at the Walton
Raceway were cancelled due to their
downpour of rain. The early rain of
Friday morning had made the track
questionable, but the pouring rain of
late Friday afternoon made the
decision easy. The track will now be
seeded down and rested for the
winter and the planning for next
year’s season will begin.

PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON
NEWS
FROM WALTON
Two couples wed in Walton-area over weekend
It was a weekend of weddings and
we congratulate two happy couples.
Duff’s United Church in Walton was
the setting for the exchange of vows
for Jennifer McClure and Marco
VanDriel. The lovely bride wore an
off-white gown and wore a veil
made by her mother Heidi. The
groom and groomsmen were attired
in black to complement the lovely
bridesmaids in peach gowns.
Following the wedding ceremony,
guests enjoyed a social time at the
farm of Fred and Heidi McClure,
while the wedding party had pictures
taken. The dinner and reception was
held at the Seaforth Community
Centre. The guests were welcomed
at the entrance by a beautiful garden
setting and the hall was decorated in
a outdoor rustic theme with peach
and brown accents. Congratulations
to Jennifer and Marco, who will be
living in Seaforth.
The second celebration was the
marriage of Candice Ross and Chris
Riley. It was held in a tent on the
farm of Chris’s parents near
Cromarty. A cool wind greeted the
guests who witnessed the vows of
the lovely bride, Candice, in a
beautiful white gown with sparkling
accents and her handsome groom in
black. The guests enjoyed hors
d’oeuvres at the farm before
attending the wedding dinner and
reception at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. Brown
and sage green with camo accents
adorned the tables and the wooden
rustic back drop. The bridesmaids
looked lovely in chocolate brown
gowns. Candice is the daughter of
Eric (Deb) Ross and Jayne (Keith
White) Ross. Congratulations to
Candice and Chris who will be
living in Brussels.
A surprise birthday celebration
was held for Chris Blake on the
weekend. He was quite surprised
when he arrived at the farm of Scott
and Alicia McDonald to find about
40 friends and family waiting in the
dark to surprise him. The party was
about a week early of his birthday,
so turning 30 next week, will just be
another day! Happy birthday Chris!
Congratulations to Kelly and
Amanda White on the arrival of a
beautiful baby girl. She is named
Alexis Jane and is welcomed home
by grandparents John and Sandra
Dorsch and Keith and Jane White.
A few familiar faces have been
seen around Brussels in recent
weeks. Gerald and Joan Miller have
been in our area visiting with their
family and friends. They drove here
from their home in Claresholm,
Alberta and have spent around three
weeks here. They enjoyed a campout
with family and friends the first
weekend here and have been busy
visiting with many old friends. They
spent time with relatives at the
Thresher Reunion in Blyth and other
attractions to fill the days. Time flies
and they will be heading home soon.
Many folks who remember
Doreen Rutledge will remember her
entertaining sister Ada Mae from
Las Vegas. She has been in Ontario
for about a month and has spent time
visiting with many of the friends she
met over the years around Brussels
and Seaforth. She stayed with friend
Fern Chesney in Seaforth and they
were a busy pair touring around. She
had good visits with the Rutledge
nephews and with Lloyd and Mabel
Glanville and others.
It is hard to believe that a year has
passed since the opening of the
Huron Country Hardware store. The
store was opened by Mike and
Michelle Dauphin and Andy and
Sarah Overholt, with the hopes of
continuing on the tradition of the
main street hardware store. They
have expanded their product lines to
aid the consumers of Brussels and
we hope they are doing well.
Congratulations on their first year in
business.
We can hope that more business
opportunities will come to the
downtown core of Brussels. There
are many empty storefronts available
and maybe a combination of
businesses could make it more
viable for a new venture to open on
main? Sometimes it just takes a
casual remark among friends to
spawn a great business
combination – a thought to ponder!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week was Ben Driscoll, Heather

Schmeltzer. Happy birthday to all.
