Brussels Fall Fair brings bevy of quality goods
I’m starting out thinking about the
weather again. It’s been another
week of change – Bruce Philips, a
meteorologist was on Canada AM
and is always fun to listen to as he
reviews the weird and wonderful
weather of Canada. He has helped
compile the Weather Calendar for
many years and with a smile
mentioned that this hot topic
calendar outsells even Playboy. So
no wonder we start with the weather.
Excellent fair last week. Lots of
participation with quality products,
be it art or craft, grain or beans,
sewing or knitting, fruit or
vegetables, bread or brownies,
flowers or photos, alpaca or holstein.
It is amazing to see all the things that
people do and the results of their
labours. Thanks again for showing
us the blessing we have in our
agriculture community.
The IPM was near at hand near
Mitchell and if you went the first few
days you had a good time. Later rain
ruled. Stories will be told for years
to come about the mud and water
depth by Saturday. Prior to that the
place was amazing with well-
organized parking and wagon rides
to the site. The many displays were
interesting – equipment old and new
on display, products you didn’t know
existed, and of course food andentertainment to no end. Sowandering the site showed a lot of
our community visiting and taking a
keen interest in how agriculture is
doing.
For us Saturday started with a nice
chat with Nancy and Bruce Corriganat Cinnamon Jim’s. They’re herefrom Port Hawkesbury/Port
Hastings, Nova Scotia to check on
Mother Betty Gowing and catch up
on the family news. So if you’re in
the Cape Breton area stop in.
Belgrave United was the place tobe for organ music and food onSaturday. Each hour the type of
music changed to show the century.
Twelve hours of organ music takes a
lot of preparation and it was played
by the talented Ann Clarke, the
church organist. As well as themelodies, breakfast then chili couldbe enjoyed then later peruse the
many silent auction and food items
available. A good place to spend a
rainy Saturday. Good idea.
There are lots of things to do on
the weekend – Jamie Warren at
cinnamon Jim’s, the Legion Fish
Fry, Community Living Dinner and
Dance, Harmony Kings in Seaforth
and to top any of those Ross
Nichol’s 90th birthday party is on
Sunday, then you can rest.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Starting the festivities
Brussels Fair Ambassador, Kabrina Bishop, left, and Fair Committee Chair Nicole Noble
kicked off the Brussels Fall Fair last Tuesday when they participated in the ceremonial cutting
of the corn stalks. The event, which ran from Tuesday to Wednesday night, shines a spotlight
on the crafts, skills and agricultural prowess of people of all ages from Brussels and the
surrounding communities. (Vicky Bremner photo)

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At the Branch
Comrades kept busy all week
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was Legion Week across the
province and the Brussels Legion
had its annual booth at the Brussels
Fall Fair. Comrades Glenn Bridge
and Cecil Moore manned the booth
on Tuesday evening. Information
about the Legion was available from
Comrades Cecil and Deb Cann on
Wednesday. The Legion Comrades
were also accepting donations
for the Alzheimer’s Society and
giving a free coffee mug to all who
donated.
Saturday was the annual trip to
Parkwood Hospital by Comrades of
Zone C1. A bus picked up over 40
Comrades from Kincardine to
Exeter to spend the afternoon with
the residents of Parkwood Hospital.
Each of the Branches sent along 10
goody bags filled with items for the
residents. Attending from Branch
218 Brussels were Veterans Service
Officer Mabel Glanville and her
daughter Sharon Robbins. The
afternoon included a variety show
presented by the Comrades
attending. This was the 25th year the
Legions across Zone C1 have
been going to the hospital to
entertain.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 14 tables of players hoping to be
winners. The euchre was held
upstairs due to the washroom
renovations. Winners were: first,
Edna Cox and Shirley Gilders, 77;
second, Edna McLellan and friend
Lois, 73; third, tied, Mae Ritchie and
Lillian Appleby and Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 70;
lone hands, Tom and Eileen Sloan,
seven; low, Olave Little and Barb
Alexander, 45.
The catering crew was busy on
Saturday with the Ross/Riley
wedding. They cooked everything
but the meat and served the meal for
the 200 guests for the wedding
dinner. Congratulations to Candice
Ross and Chris Riley on their
marriage. Helping for the Branch
was Judy Lee and Jo-Ann
McDonald with the early day prep of
taking necessary items to the arena.
Helping with the food prep were
Judy, Jo-Ann, Deb Cann and Rick
McDonald cutting the meat.
Assisting with serving and clean up
was Jean Bridge, Nanci Ducharme,
Alica McDonald, Mabel Glanville,
Daisy Schmidt and two young ladies
working for community service
hours. Great job by all.
The Sunday night dance had the
music provided by the Country
Versatiles. A good crowd of over 80
dancers enjoyed the evening.
Helpers for the evening were Rona
and Daisy Schmidt, Deb Cann, Judy
Lee, Mabel Glanville and Jo-Ann
McDonald.
Following the dance, the ladies
arranged the tables for the next day
event. They arrived Monday
morning to prepare for the Lions and
Leo dinner upstairs and the Optimist
dinner downstairs, to be held that
night. Helping with prep work was
Deb Cann, Mabel Glanville, Jo-Ann
McDonald and Sharon Robbins.
Helping with the evening meal of
roast beef was Deb, Jo-Ann, Judy
Lee, Rick McDonald, Nanci
Ducharme, Judy Emmrich. The
Optimist had about 30 attend their
ladies evening and the Lions had
about 75 guests for the inaugural
Leo night.
