The Wingham Ironmen got ready
for the 2013-14 season by playing a
pre-season exhibition game at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex last Friday evening against
the Walkerton Hawks.
Walkerton scored the first two
goals of the game, only to have the
Ironmen tie the score by the end of
the first period. Wingham took a 5-2
lead in the second period and then
hung on as the Hawks made it close
with a pair of late third period
markers. The Ironmen won the game
5-4.
Aaron Armstrong paced the attack
with a pair of goals. Brett Brophy
and Tyler Fritz each picked up a pair
of assists. Netting single goals for
the Ironmen were Josh Stewart,
Jeremy Ross and Blake Pickering.
The Ironmen competed in the
Junior C showcase in Kincardine
over the weekend, playing Midland
and Dorchester. Coach Louie
Livingston said he thought the team
played a smart game.
“There are some guys out there
looking for a job with the Ironmen,”
he said. “They played hard, they
worked hard and that’s what you got
to do if you’re going to make this
Ironmen team.”
The coach said he will be carrying
20 players this year. “We have a few
returning players and we think we
have a lot of good rookies that are
going to be on this team also.”
According to Livingston, Aaron
Armstrong will be the captain, but
the alternates have yet to be decided.
Derrick Shrier will be one of the
goalies this year. “The other goalie
has yet to determined,” he said. “We
have a good little Brussels goalie in
Nathan Watson out there and he’s
doing really well.”
“Brody TenPas was not out there
tonight [Friday] but he will be there
tomorrow [Saturday] playing in our
exhibition games,” he said. “He’s
signed and he’s one of our rookies
we have.”
Coach Livingston said he likes the
look of the team this year. “We have
a good crop of veterans and we have
some good young rookies this year,”
he said.
The Ironmen open the season on
the road this weekend, playing the
Walkerton Hawks on Friday,
beginning at 8:20 p.m. And then
travel to Mount Forest on Saturday
for a game getting underway at 8
p.m. The first home game for the
Ironmen is Sept. 20 when they host
the Hawks, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.

Saugeen Lightning nearly win
‘B’ gold in first season tourney
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning kicked off its 2013-14
season at the Stoney Creek
Showcase tournament this past
weekend. This year’s team consists
of: goaltenders, Morgan Baker,
Kincardine and Rebecca Ropp,
Milverton; defencemen, Kailyn
Soers, Ciara Lark, both of Mildmay,
Jordyn Sholdice, Brussels, Jamie
Simpson, Sebringville, Maddie
Duncan, Kincardine, and Nikki
Zabel, Palmerston; forwards Dawn
Pletsch, Neve VanPelt, both of
Mitchell, Cassidy Colhoun,
Kincardine, Ashlee Lawrence, Owen
Sound, Tori Terpstra, Atwood, Lexi
Smith, Brussels, Avery Reeves,
Mount Forest, Mel Nolan, Dublin
and Sarah Biesenthal, Chepstow. Joe
Chaffe is the head coach, along with
Bill Lark and Derek Simpson.
Trainers are Kelly Colhoun and Lori
Zabel and Rob Duncan is the
manager.
Game one in Stoney Creek had the
Lightning up against the Alaska
Icebreakers. The Lightning opened
the scoring early in the first on a goal
by Colhoun from Nolan and
Lawrence.
Smith made it 2-0 on a pass from
Terpstra in the second and they
picked up their third goal in the third
period on a nice passing play with
Terpstra getting the goal top shelf
from Smith and Biesenthal. Alaska
got one back late in the third but that
was all they would get as the Bolts
picked up a 3-1 win with Baker
between the pipes.
Game two had the Lightning up
against Peterborough and they
struck early in the first and never
looked back posting a 4-0 victory.
Ropp picked up the shutout. Goals
were scored by Terpstra from Soers,
Herman from Soers and VanPelt,
Smith unassisted and Biesenthal
from Terpstra and Smith.
Game three the Lightning lost a
tough game 2-1 to Syracuse. VanPelt
picked up the goal and Baker was in
the cage. This ended the round-robin
portion of the tournament and the
Bolts ended up in third in the
grouping. This put them in the B
championship round and their first
opponent was Little Caesars of
Detroit. It was a back-and-forth
game with regulation ended in a
scoreless draw. Overtime began and
shortly into the extra frame
Lawerence sealed the victory with a
wrap around goal on a setup from
Herman. Ropp picked up the
shutout.
Quarterfinal play began early
Sunday morning against Chatham.
Less than four minutes into the game
the Bolts established 2-0 lead on
goals by Reeves from VanPelt and
Hannah Herman and Terpstra from
Biesenthal. Chatham got one by
Baker but that is all she would allow
them and Colhoun sealed it from
Lawrence and Simpson for a 3-1
victory. Up next in semifinals was
Ottawa, which resulted in another
Bolts victory by a score of 2-0.
Terpstra from Smith and Zabel and
VanPelt from Lawrence. Ropp
picked up the win.
In the finals the Lightning faced
North Bay. In a hard-fought affair,
the Bolts came out on the wrong end
of a 3-0 score.
It was a great start to the season
for the Lightning.

The Wingham Gold and Curling
Club had a busy week last week
despite the fall-like weather
conditions.
On Tuesday, Sept. 3 Gayle Neil
sank the longest putt to take home
the weekly Tuesday Ladies Day
prize. The Wednesday senior men
had 24 golfers on a cool, but clear
morning. Ken Verbakel finished first
with Hugh Clugston, second and
Brian Skinn, third. Brian Carr was
winner of the longest putt while
Terry Taylor captured closest to the
pin. Ed Daer shot 39 for the low
round of the day.
The Thursday night men had 64
golfers on a super golf night. Jay
Marston and John Dailleboust both
fired great rounds of 35 to share low
gross. The pin winners were longest
putts, Gord Fisher, Jamie Chester,
Wayne Gordon and Don Bone with
Dailleboust taking home longest
drive. The closest to the pin were
won by Trevor Hopf and Bone while
hidden score winners were Greg
Tiffin, Ray Walker and Don Watson.
The monthly wing night on
Friday, Sept. 6 was a huge success as
Cheryl and the girls served close to
1,500 tasty wings. Next month’s
wing night on Oct. 4 will be the final
of the season.
Saturday, despite the wet weather,
the club held its annual lefty/righty
competition. The righties were just
too strong this year taking home the
trophy and bragging rights until next
year.
The annual fall barbecue is
Sunday, Sept. 28. Tickets are
available from any golf or
curling member as well as at the pro
shop.
