Yvonne Knight named Brussels Citizen of the YearYvonne Knight of the Cranbrook
area has been named 2013’s Citizen
of the Year for Brussels and its
surrounding communities.
Knight received six nominations
for The Citizen’s annual award and
all spoke of her hard work and
dedication towards both the Brussels
and Cranbrook communities.
Upon being told she had won,
Knight said it was a “real surprise”
to win the award that she hadn’t
anticipated.
“A lot of great people have won
that award, so to be in that group is
something great,” she said. “It’s
something I never expected.”
One nominator said that Knight isa devoted wife and grandmother, butalso a lifelong community worker inthe Cranbrook and Brussels
communities.
Knight has worked for several
community organizations over the
years, including working as a
community correspondent for
Cranbrook in The Citizen for five
years.
Knight has been a member of the
Majestic Women’s Institute for 50
years and is currently the institute’s
district director. She is also very
involved with both the Brussels
Agricultural Society and the Brussels
and District Horticultural Society.
Volunteerism has been very
important to Knight over the years,
as she has spent time working withboth the Canadian Cancer Societyand the Huronlea Home for the AgedVolunteer Auxiliary.
Knight has led 15 4-H clubs and
has taken numerous 4-H courses
herself. She has also served as a
member of the Huron County 4-H
Council. She has been the president
of the Brussels Lawn Bowling Club,
the president of the women’s
division of the Brussels Curling
Club and was an active member of
the Cranbrook Hall Board.
Serving as the assistant pianist for
the Cranbrook Presbyterian Church,
Knight has also taught Sunday
School at the church for 50 years.
She now leads one of the church’s
Bible study groups.
She was an active member of theGrey Central Home and SchoolAssociation where she directed oneof the association’s plays.
Knight is also a historian, whose
recorded history of Cranbrook is
kept at the Brussels Library.
“Her positive attitude and
dedication has been a benefit to our
local community,” one nominator
said of Knight.
“She is certainly deserving of
recognition,” said another.
In her interview with The Citizen,
Knight says that she certainly
doesn’t do what she does for the
recognition, just to help improve the
community around her.
“Yvonne is a very kind, caring and
community-oriented person,” one
nomination said.
Another nominator painted the
picture of Knight welcoming
newcomers into the community,
saying that she often brings new
residents into her home for a “treat”
from her kitchen.
The nomination went on to read,
“Yvonne has been a community
volunteer for many years and still
spends many hours each week trying
to make her community a great place
to live.”
The Citizen will honour Knight
with a plaque in recognition of her
decades of selfless acts and
volunteerism at a later date.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Fall marks leisure time for some
It smells like September. You stick
your head outside just before
tucking in for the night, or first thing
in the morning, and it hits you: the
autumn season has fully arrived.
There are many folks who don’t
need to smell to know that
September is here. The bus drivers,
the kids and teachers are a week into
that fact. Leisure time is a little more
available to the Thresher
establishment folk now, as the
details of 2013 are reviewed and
rehashed. The success of the reunion
can be enjoyed, the pressure of the
week is off, so September becomes
manageable. Ball players have had
their schedules and tournaments,
and they too are ready for a little
more leisure in September. Oh yes
the hockey tryouts are here and
some are done already. Yes it’s fall.
Fall fair planners are now in high
gear, Belgrave this week and
Brussels next. Both these fairs are
part of our history and many could
tell stories of their past that could
cause a giggle or two. School prizes
for writing/printing, poems and
stories, notebooks or pieces of art,
all with the promise of cash.
Receiving the cash in a wee brown
envelope weeks later spread the joy
