The Citizen, 2013-09-05, Page 7THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2013. PAGE 7.September barbecue debated by Huron East CouncilA Huron East charity barbecueraised some eyebrows around theHuron East Council table at the Aug.13 meeting, concerning costs and
staff time.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight presented council with areport on the proposed barbecuemunicipal staff hoped to have nextmonth in an effort to raise funds for
the United Way of Perth-Huron.
Newly-sworn-in Councillor
Allison Dekroon was concerned, however, about setting a precedentwith such an event, fearing that aUnited Way barbecue would pave
the way for other area charities
expecting the same treatment. She
also didn’t want too many staffmembers tied up by the event.Knight told councillors that theintent behind the event was that the
municipality would donate the
materials for the barbecue and a
large grill would be donated byHuron East Chief Building OfficialPaul Josling, so supply costs werelikely to be minimal.
Councillor David Blaney said it
was great that municipal staff
wanted to get involved and give back
to their community.
Knight told councillors that the
municipal office would continue to
run during the lunch-time barbecue
and that no municipal office services
would be interrupted due to the
event.
The barbecue is tentatively
scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12,
but Councillor Bob Fisher said
there may be a conflict with an
event held by the food bank, which
also operates out of Huron
East’s municipal office in
Seaforth. Staff was instructed to
investigate the date, and potential
conflicts, and report back to
council.
Our condolences to the Carnochan

on the passing of Brad Carnochan.

He was a dedicated family man, a
farmer and a popular friend to many.
Our sympathies to all.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Engel family on the passing of
John Engel. He will be sadly missed
by his wife Pat and family Pam,

Celebrating a birthday last week
was Nora Stephenson. She was
treated to a birthday lunch by Isabel
Wheeler and Donna Knight at the
Dinner Bell in Clinton. They stopped
in to see Margery Huether at the new
Seaforth Retirement Home for a
visit. They had a very nice afternoon
together.
Returning from a three-day trip
with the Cattlemen group are several
folks I know. Bob and Joyce
Alexander and Glenn Johnston and
Jane Hall enjoyed a trip to Kingston
and Gananoque. They went on a
Thousand Island Tour and went to
the Colonial House for a show. It
was a great show.
Congratulations to Karin
McDonald on becoming a
grandmother again. Daughter
Kendra and her husband Louis have
welcomed a bouncing baby girl to
their lives. Gabrielle arrived in the
early morning hours of Sept. 2 in
Calgary with Grandma Karin
already there to welcome her arrival.
She is another niece for the
McDonalds to love.
Many members of the McDonald
family, including Jim and Linda and
Marilyn McDonald, and Bremner
family members from our area
attended the wedding of Andrea
Bremner and Mike Frias. Andrea is
the daughter of Pat McDonald Parr
and Barry Bremner. The wedding
was held near Sombra on Sunday
afternoon and was a very lovely
affair. Following the ceremony, a
dinner and wonderful reception was
enjoyed by everyone. The young
couple resides in Victoria B.C.
Congratulations to the couple.
Steve and Marni Knight and Rick
and Jo-Ann McDonald spent a
beautiful Labour Day weekend in
Niagara Falls together. They went on
Saturday afternoon and arrived to
enjoy a lovely walk to the falls and
around the area. Dinner and
entertainment concluded the day.
The next day was spent on Clifton
Hill enjoying Frankenstein’s
Haunted House, the Revolving Eye
ferris wheel and target shooting.
I am pleased to report, Rick and I
tied for highest shots! A visit to the
casino on a couple of occasions was
enjoyed with ups and downs for all.
A little shopping, a stop at Niagara
on the Lake on the way home and an
enjoyable weekend was completed.

Filming a coffee break
Jeanette Sears, middle, was really excited about the
upcoming coffee breaks for Alzheimer’s Disease. Hosted by
the Alzheimer Society of Huron County as well as local
businesses and individuals, the event raises money to
search for a cure for the disease. Businesses like the
Queens Bakery, represented here by part-owner Les Cook,
right, are encouraged to participate and the organization
hopes the commercial they were shown shooting here will
spread the word. For more information, visit
