Chip and a Putt

On Aug. 10, at 7:30 p.m. Brussels
will be playing host to a very special
concert as Danny Brooks and the
Brotherhood will be giving a
freewill offering performance at
Melville Presbyterian Church.
“If it’s true, as Ringo Starr once
said, that “you’ve gotta pay your
dues if you wanna sing the blues”,
then Danny Brooks has enough life
experience to share with a dozen
fledgling performers”, said Mark
Rheaume of CBC Radio. He sings a
powerful blend of
Blues/Gospel/Country like he’s been
there, and that’s because he has.
Danny started doing club dates in
and around southern Ontario when
he was 16. From there he went to
Boston with, what he describes in
his book, Miracles For Breakfast, as
a Mafia R&B band. Later it was
L.A., up to Vancouver and back to
Ontario. Unfortunately at the same
time he also moved from glue
sniffing to MDA and speed with
booze on the side. In the early 1970s
he spent 15 months in the Guelph
Reformatory for break and enter and
robbery. Upon coming out Danny
struggled with the straight life with
regular jobs and a little music.
Unfortunately, the old demons of
booze and drugs were still there and
as he tried to build a music career
they became the crutches that both
held him up and kept him down.
By the early 1980s his love of
performing had him back on stage
but his personal life was a mess as
his first marriage came apart. For the
next six years he sang and drank his
way around Ontario. He also met
Debi, who not only became his
second wife, but whom he credits
with being a very important part of
what is now over 20 years of
Brooks concert set for Melville
