Stingers hold on to AA trophy at Brussels tourney

annual Tigers tournament
Huron County Fastball League
teams captured all four titles of the
42nd Brussels Tigers Fastball
tournament, held on the weekend,
with the Belmore Stingers repeating
as the AA champions.
It was a cool, damp weekend, but
the schedule was not affected with
the exception of the final game on
Saturday. That game was played
Sunday morning at the arena
diamond.
The AB championship was
claimed by the Fullarton A’s, with
the BA title being won by the
Brussels Tigers and the BB crown
was captured by the Walton Brewers.
In the AA championship, Belmore
scored two runs in the bottom of the
fourth inning, and then hung on to
claim a 4-2 decision over Harwood
Corners.
Harwood scored two runs in the
top of the first, with Belmore putting
one runner across the plate in the
bottom half of the inning. The
Stingers thought they had scored two
runs, but the second runner was
called out for not touching second
base. They evened the score in the
third inning and then added two
more in the fourth.
Kris Wright went the distance on
the mound for Belmore.
Nelson Gayman, Kris Wright and
Josh Brogan had two hits apiece for
Belmore. Contributing single hits
were Brett McPherson, Jordan
Grubb and Nathan Mawhinney.
Kevin Rolston had two hits for
Harwood.
Belmore defeated Melbourne Mile
8-4 in the AA semi-final.
Fullarton A’s easily won the AB
final, scoring a 17-0 decision over
the Kitchener Selects, with the
Selects walking off the field in the
bottom of the fourth inning with the
A’s still at bat.
Brady Siddal and Tom Fransom
hit home runs for the A’s, with Siddal
adding a single. Scott Kemp and
Jamie Pfieffer each had a triple and a
single. Andrew Pearn had two
singles and a double.
Scott Cook had a single for
Kitchener. Kitchener edged past the
Straffordville Stealth 2-1 in the AB
semi-final.
Brussels scored a 5-4 decision
over league rival Goderich Grizzlies
to claim the BA title.
Andrew Baker had two doubles
and two singles for the Tigers. Jamie
Hickling had a double and single,
with Ty Sebastian rapping out a pair
of singles. Contributing single base
hits were Brian McArter, Steve
Scholl and Adam Corbett.
Shawn Daw started on the mound
with Sebastian taking over in
relief.
Devin Johnson hit a three-run
home run for Goderich with Mike
Mathers rapping out three singles.
Shawn DeGroot was the pitcher
for Goderich.
Veteran player Jason Kellington
said it was a great weekend,
with some great ball being
played. “Everybody helped out to
make the tournament a success,” he
said.
According to Kellington,
Goderich made a game of the finals.
Daw pitched great at the start of
the game and Sebastian came on in
relief and also pitched great. “We
had some timely hitting and some
timely pitching,” he said,
In the BA semi-final, Brussels got
past the Zurich Rangers 9-0, with
Sebastian recording nine strikeouts
in picking up the win. McArter was
2-3 at the plate.
Matt Shortreed connected for a
three-run home run in the top of the
seventh inning as the Walton
Brewers defeated Wroxeter Royals
8-6 to claim the BB championship.
Walton scored three runs in the
first inning, put single runs across
the plate in the fourth and sixth
innings before getting three in the
seventh.
Wroxeter scored two runs in the
first inning and added three more in
the fourth inning before getting a
single run in the fifth.
Darryl Houston, Jeff Smith, Chad
Annis and Kevin Murray each
rapped out a pair of hits. Getting one
hit apiece were Jamie Wicke, Barry
Young , Adam Verkley, Andrew Van
Vliet and Scott McDonald.
Veteran player Paul Dolmage said
the team got off to a slow start in the
tournament. He indicated that things
started going better for the team in
games three and four.
“It was a total team effort,” he
said. “We had some timely pitching
and timely hitting by Matt Shortreed
to put us in the money.”
Walton got past Wingham 3-2 in
the BB semi-final.
Chad Annis hit a home run for
Walton, with Scott McDonald
scoring two runs. Paul Dolmage did
the pitching for Walton.
Dennis Wintemute did the pitching
for Wingham and also accounted for
the team’s runs as he connected for a
pair of home runs.
In the first round of games,
Belmore defeated Brussels 5-2,
Straffordville downed Wingham 4-0,
Fullarton beat Wroxeter 10-0,
Harwood Corners got past
Goderich 7-3, Kitchener doubled
up Zurich 6-3 and Melbourne
defeated Walton 7-3.
Results of the first round games on
the championship side, were
Belmore over Straffodville 5-1,
Harwood Corners edging past
Fullarton 2-1 and Melbourne
squeaking past Kitchener 2-1.
In the first round on the
consolation side, the scores were
Brussels over Wingham 8-1,
Goderich over Wroxeter 8-1 and
Zurich getting past Walton 7-6.

The executive meeting for July
was held on Tuesday evening. There
were six Comrades present.
Discussions included the upcoming
booth duties for the weekend. The
food booth was cleaned by Sandra
Josling and Jo-Ann McDonald.
Comrade Deb has a new piece of
countertop and she will install it
before the weekend in the shack. Jo-
Ann will arrange to have someone
move it to the park, as well as the
other items needed.
The fastball tournament food
booth required many hands to
accomplish the weekend of work
and thanks to all Comrades who
helped. The setup crew of Greg
Wilson, Jim and Chris Brown, John
Lowe and Jo-Ann mcDonald had the
booth ready for action for Friday
night. The crew of Lisa Glanville,
Peter and Terry Grey, Sharon
Robbins, Ron and Daisy Schmidt
and Jo-Ann McDonald managed
very well feeding the spectators
and players of the two games
played.
The Saturday morning crew of
Lisa, Sandra Josling and Catrina
Josling was followed by Bob and
Monica Richardson and Mabel
Glanville. The evening duties were
handled by Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy
Lee, Deb Cann and Chris Brown.
The Sunday shift started with
George Adams, Glenn Bridge and
Nicole Noble followed by Randy
White, Eric Ross and Nanci
Ducharme with Jim Brown,
Mike Dauphin, Judy Lee and Jo-
Ann McDonald helping with
winding up the evening. Good job
folks.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 13-and-a-half tables of players.
Winners were: high, George and
Deanna Bacon, 73; second, Marion
Harrison and Olave Little, 72; third,
Norm and Helen Dobson, 71; lone
hands, Mae Ritchie and Florence
Machan, low, Carol Hexall and Jean
Bridge.
There was no dance on Sunday
night.
