Spring supposedly arrived last
Wednesday in case you missed it. On
the first day of spring, there were lots
of slippery roads, on and off snow
flurries, a cold wind and many folks
having to run their snowblowers,
hopefully for the last time. The
groomer for the snowmobile trails
was out working with the
snowmobile enthusiasts hoping to be
able to have a few more rides. I did
see a few machines out but not that
many. The trails were busy on the
weekend though.
It may have been the road
conditions or maybe poor visibility
or maybe lack of judgement, when a
hydro maintenance truck with wood
chipper decided to enter the P&H
property in Walton. Unfortunately,
the truck was about 100 feet short of
being on the driveway and was
stuck. Just one of many vehicles
stuck across the countryside on the
first day of spring.
Congratulations to the Brussels
Blyth Midget hockey team as the
new OMHA champions. They
defeated Belmont on Sunday
evening to win the championship. Ifyou could hear sirens on Sundayevening around 11:30 p.m. that wasthe boys celebrating with the
traditional ride on the fire truck
around Brussels.
The BW Trailblazers met at
Walton Hall on Wednesday evening,
the first day of spring. They
discussed how the season has gone
and any problems encountered over
the year. They made plans for their
wrap-up evening to be held in April.
We are sorry to hear that Ruth
Schade is in hospital in Seaforth at
this time. We hope she is improving.
Stopping in for a visit with
Margery Huether this past week in
Victoria Hospital was Karen Hoegy.
She had a nice visit with Margery
who sends hellos to all her Walton
friends.
An update on Hayden Flood is that
he is coming along. He is still
sidelined at home but can transfer
very carefully with crutches from
place to place. He is not allowed any
weight-bearing on the broken leg yet
but hopefully it is healing well. Time
is long on a young man sitting
around, but he is making the best of
it.
Congratulations to Tanner and
Loni Leslie who are the proud
parents of a bouncing baby boy. The
arrival of Ryan Adam makes it an
even two girls, two boys for
Grandma Patty Banks.
The Cranbrook Dart club has
another night in the books. Team
two, consisting of Evelyn Blake,
Teuni Smith and George Zwepcaptured five out of six games. Thedart queen reins again as newcomer,Rita Bowers takes top place with the
high score of 121 and Murray
Houston represented the men hitting
a high of 105. Way to go members of
Cranbrook darts.
Our condolences to Mark and
Caitlin Gillis on the passing of her
mother Cynthia Bellamy. The
funeral was held in Owen Sound.
Our sympathies to all.
Welcome back to Gary and Kelly
McNichol. They have spent about
eight weeks away in the south. They
spent about a month in Alabama and
a month in Florida. Gary reports
enjoying the hot weather and having
a fantastic and relaxing time.
Lorne and Bonnie Glanville have
returned from a three-week holiday
in Arizona. They spent time visiting
with Lorne’s brother Alex and wife
Gail. They enjoyed the great weather
and catching up with the “western”
connection of the Glanville family.
The couple flew to Arizona but drove
a vehicle home. Welcome back.
A few weeks ago, Alex and Gail,
had other Walton visitors. Murray
and Sherry McCall and Jack and
Nancy Storey went down for a visit.
They enjoyed the visit with big sister
Gail.
Returning from a weekend in the
west is Don Chesher. He flew to
Calgary to have a short visit and
birthday celebration with his son and
family. He attended a Calgary
Flames hockey game against the
Nashville Predators, (Calgary won)with his son Darren. They celebratedhis grandson’s birthday, March 16and then Don’s birthday March 17
with a party. A shopping excursion
rounded out the four-day stay and
Don flew home on Tuesday. Don
reports it was very cold in Calgary
and he returned to our snowstorm
here on Tuesday. Welcome back
Don.
Anne Ryan, Olene Dennis and her
daughter Laura enjoyed a day at the
Canada Blooms event in Toronto.
They went by bus and had the day at
the combined Blooms and Home
show held in the Royal Winter Fair
building. Anne reports that the
flowers were beautiful.
Returning from a very memorable
trip was Jerry, Sandra, Nic and Cole
Zwep. They joined Marion Hunt,
Doug O’Neill, Jadon and Kolton,
Tracey Lee and Caden for a week’s
vacation in Courchevel, France.
They were guests of John and Marci,
Alivia and Indre McCall MacBain at
their home in Courchevel. The group
enjoyed skiing everyday and it was
awesome. During one night, they
received 40 centimetres of fresh
snow and the skiing was more of a
challenge. They also tried a form of
luge, where they slide down a snow-
covered track. Nic reports it was fun.
They watched movies at night and
had a great time. Even the eight-hour
plane ride was enjoyed. Welcomeback.Celebrating birthdays last weekinclude John Gillis, Kennedy-Ann
Huether, Ben Finlayson, Cathy
Regele, Brandi Williamson, Randal
Linton, Dave Watson, Kerrisa

Gulutzen, Ashley Hoegy, Ken

(Laverty) Chadwick. Happy birthday

The residents of St. Columban are
going to court, says Huron East
Against Turbines (HEAT) member
Rob Tetu.
At Huron East Council’s March
19 meeting, Tetu told councillors
that a group of residents from St.
Columban has retained Julian
Falconer from Falconer Charney
LLP in a lawsuit against the
Ministry of the Environment.
The lawsuit, Tetu says, deals with
the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,
part of which would be an injunction
against the wind turbines companies
that would put a halt to the work
being done.
Beyond that information, Tetu
says, not much else could be
revealed, but he did want to be clear
that the lawsuit is being launched by
residents of the St. Columban area,
not HEAT.
