Festival Singers to perform Hakkers honoured for years as administrator Years of service Deb Hakkers was thanked for her years of service as office administrator for the Blyth United Church on Sunday with some potted flowers. Albert Wasson had the honour of thanking Hakkers for her work and dedication. (Photo submitted) The Blyth Festival Singers are exploring new ground in their next concert, the “Music of the Americas.” They will be introducing their audience to classical, traditional and contemporary pieces of music from countries of the Western Hemisphere, with help from their special guest, the Huron Harp School. Expect some amazing surprises as we present an eclectic mix including soulful numbers from Jamaica, contemporary pieces like “I Dreamed of Rain” and the “Seal Lullaby” from North America, songs from Guatemala and other Central American countries with a lively beat, a smattering of Stephen Foster and more! What characterizes most of the choir’s pieces is its lively, yet universal appeal. After her recent travels to teach at a cultural centre in El Salvador, Sharon Johnston, together with the Huron Harp School are sure to have some surprises in store, as they perform a whole new style of latin harp music. Add some percussion and the acoustic space of Clinton United Church and it will be an altogether lively and interesting concert. Founded in 2006, Huron Harp School has over a dozen members of all ages and abilities who join together in a casual setting to create a magical sound. Huron Harp School members can be found performing at weddings, churches, special events, and often on summer evenings “harping down the sun” at a local restaurant. Their two CDs are “Hearts, Hands and Harps” (2007) and “Hearts, Hands and Harps at Christmas” (2009). “Music of the Americas” will be performed in Clinton United Church on Sunday, April 7 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for children and are available at Blyth Centre for the Arts 519-523-9300, at Fincher’s, Goderich; The Citizen office, Brussels; The Dutch Store, Clinton; from any Blyth Festival Singer or maybe even at the door. The Blyth Festival Singers, averaging 40-50 members, form a county-wide, community choir under the professional direction of Robert Blackwell and accompanied by Laura McAlpine. The Singers perform primarily in Huron County and endeavour to present a high standard of choral singing. They are certainly looking forward to their annual Dinner and Cabaret on June 1 in the Varna Complex. This “Canadian Connections” cabaret, featuring Blyth Theatre alumnus David Archibald, will definitely be a rollicking good time. Be sure to mark your calendars. Greeting worshippers at the Blyth United Church on Palm Sunday, March 24 were the members of the Sunday School. The service was held in the auditorium of the church. The children, along with their teachers, told the Easter story under the direction of Superintendent Lorna Fraser. Reid Button and Braidon Abell-Rinn had the main parts of the program. The call to worship was the singing of the hymn, “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus”. The story of the call of the disciples was Jesus asking the fishermen to help spread the news. The children sang the song, “Twelve Disciples”. The children were handed palm branches to wave and paraded in the aisles. The next hymn was, “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”. Karen Glousher read the story of the washing of Jesus’ feet. The members of the Sunday School went among the congregation and anointed their hands with oil. The children sang the song, “Give Me Oil in My Lamp”. Hope Button read the story of theLast Supper. The offering was received and Connor Brooks said the children’s prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. Deb Hakkers read the story of Jesus going into the garden to pray. Lorna Fraser read the story of Jesus’ arrest. The last hymn was the singing of “Go Now in Peace”. At the service Deb Hakkers was presented with a bouquet of flowers for her years of service as church secretary. After the service everyone was invited for coffee and treats before going home. By Marilyn Craig Call 523-9318 From Marilyn’s Desk The Citizen offices will be closed on FRIDAY, MARCH 29 for Good Friday The deadlines for the April 4 paper will be the same as usual: Monday, April 1 2 pm in Brussels and 4 pm in Blyth All to save you from wrath to come! (Brooks, “The Golden Key to Open Hidden Treasures”) Christians, spend your days in admiring the transcendent love of Christ—in undergoing hellish punishments in your stead! Oh pray, pray hard that you “may be able to comprehend what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of that love of Christ, which passes knowledge!” Ephesians 3:18-19 The love of Christ put Him upon these bodily and spiritual sufferings—which were so exceeding great, acute, extreme, and universal—and all to save you from wrath to come! His miseries, sorrows, and sufferings are unparalleled, and therefore Christians have the more cause to lose themselves in the contemplation of His matchless love. Oh, bless Christ! Oh, kiss Christ!, Oh, embrace Christ! Oh, cleave to Christ! Oh, follow Christ! Oh, walk with Christ! Oh, long for Christ— who for your sakes has undergone insupportable wrath and most hellish torments. Oh, look up to dear Jesus, and say, “O blessed Jesus, You were accursed—that I might be blessed! You were condemned—that I might be justified! You underwent the very torments of hell—that I might forever enjoy the pleasures of heaven! Therefore I cannot but dearly love You, and highly esteem You, and greatly honour You, and earnestly long after You!” A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 Call Today 519-606-4001 14IsaacSt,Clinton Open:Tues-Fri-9:30am~5:30pm &Sat-9:30am~4:00pm QualityClothing,CasualtoCocktail, SM-3X,VintageClothing,Purses, ShoesJewelry&Furniture Clothingtakenbyappointment Getyour“LOOK”on!
