It was not a bad week for March
Break and many families stayed
around the area and some travelled.
Unfortunately, the snowmobile trails
were not the best with the early week
rain, but with expected bad weather
again this week, maybe they will
ride again. Most hockey teams have
finished up their season but we still
have the midget team playing. Good
luck to them this week in the series
against Belmont.
The younger Novice team
participated in the Knights of
Columbus tournament in Huntsville
on the weekend. They had a great
three days and finished first in their
pool after playing three games. They
played the Huntsville Otters in the
“A” championship final and were the
runners-up. They came home with
medals and had a great time. They
played mini-stick hockey and
between games went swimming at
the hotel. The tournament was held
in the Canadian Summit Centre. The
facility featured two ice surfaces and
the boys played on an Olympic-
sized ice surface. The facility seated
1,500 fans and Kyle Stevenson’s
comment was the building was too
nice to be an arena. Congrats to the
Novice team.
We will soon be into spring and
the motocross season will begin inearly April. To get ready and to getinto racing form, the Godkin familytravelled to Alabama for a week’s
training. Mitchell and Lucas had a
great five days of riding preparing
for the season ahead. Many Ontario
families journeyed to Monster
Mountain, just outside of
Montgomery, to train for the week.
Katrin reports the weather was good,
in the low 20s during the day but
dropping to freezing at nights. They
had good weather for the over 16-
hour drive and were away eight
days. We hope the early training gets
the boys’ “wheels” under them and
ready for a great season ahead.
Congratulations to Alvin and Pam
McLellan on becoming grandparents
again. Their daughter Melissa and
husband Paul of Wellesley
welcomed a second son named Nate
to their family. Big brother Nolan is
excited about a baby brother.
Congratulations to Murray Lowe
on celebrating 50 years in the
barbering business. Many of his
customers along with many of his
“lady” friends dropped in to enjoy a
piece of cake. Murray just kept on
working through it all, while Ruth,
Nicole and Beckett entertained those
who dropped by. Congrats Muzzy!
We can report that tiny Emmitt
Houston, son of Darryl and Jody, is
now in a London Hospital. Our
thoughts and prayers are with them.
Brian McGavin is a travelling man
these days. Brian has just returned
from Kansas after a four-day visit.
He was touring the Kraus/Kuhn
headquarters. He was learning about
the new technologies, equipment
and lines available for field
equipment.
Neil McGavin reports that the sapat the maple syrup farm is notrunning very well. There have beenonly a few days of “just right”
weather. Warm days and cool nights
are needed. Hopefully the weather
will turn around and they will have a
successful season.
The Freedom Syrup farm hosted
the Winthrop United Church for
breakfast last Sunday. There were
about 60 members of the church
attend following their regular
morning service. Paul Dodds and
Doug Schroeder cooked the
pancakes and sausage for all to
enjoy.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had a
good group of players on hand for
their Wednesday night of darts. It is
always a boisterous and exciting
evening at darts. Teams One and Six
were the winners of four gamesapiece. Team one consisted of GayleSpeiran, Murray Houston and SteveBowers and Team six included Sarah
Klingenberg, Kathy Workman and
Rita Bowers. Top honours go to Rita
Bowers hitting 98 and Murray
Houston and George Zwep tying
with 100 points each.
My apologies to members of
Duff’s United Church who thought
they would enjoy breakfast this past
Sunday. I had the wrong date in
mind, so folks will have to wait untilApril 14 to help support the 4-HBreakfast Club.Celebrating birthdays this past
week included Cassandra Banks,
Jack Nelemans, Bob Alexander,
Edward Clark, Ray Huether Jr.,
Celeste Ryan, Cora Alcock,
McKinley Ryan, Don Chesher, Art
McNaughton, Eric Steinman, Carol
Henderson, Keith Wilbee, Cathy
Regele and Geffrey Bauer. Happy
birthday to all.

NEWS
FROM WALTON
At Huron County Council’s March
13 Committee of the Whole meeting,
council appointed a performance
review committee for the county’s
chief administrative officer.
Newly-hired CAO Brenda Orchard
brought forward a recommendation
in accordance with the report made
by consultant George Cuff last year
that a committee be formed to
review the performance of the CAO.
Reviews would take place at the six-
month mark, the one-year mark and
then annually after that.
Cuff recommended that the
committee be comprised of five
councillors: the warden, the past-
warden, the chair of Committee of
the Whole day one, the chair of
Committee of the Whole day two
and one other councillor.
Following Cuff’s recommenda-
tion, council appointed Warden
George Robertson, Past-Warden
Bernie MacLellan, Committee of the
Whole day one Chair Jim Ginn,
Committee of the Whole day two
Chair Paul Gowing and Central
Huron’s Dave Jewitt.
Ginn recommended Jewitt for the
committee, saying that he has had
plenty of experience in hiring and
performance reviews and would be
an asset to the county in such a
position.
Jewitt accepted and said he would
serve on the committee.
“I appreciate the vote of
confidence from council,” he told
councillors.
