On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on a steady market. Choice steers and heifers sold $118 to $124 with sales to $127. Second cut sold $114 to $117. Cows sold on a strong active trade at prices $2 to $3 higher. On Thursday beef veal sold steady to last week’s prices while holstein veal traded $2 higher. Lambs and goats sold on a steady market. Sheep sold under pressure. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on an active market. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned six steers averaging 1,545 lbs. selling for an average of $123.77. One gold steer weighed 1,375 lbs. and sold for $123.50. Niel Edgar of Wingham, consigned 11 steers averaging 1,404 lbs. selling for an average of $120.02. Two red heifers averaged 1,435 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $119.75. Southlore Farms of Palmerston, consigned nine heifers averaging 1,206 lbs. selling for an average of $116.20. One charolais heifer weighed 1,355 lbs. and sold for $118.50. There were 243 cows on offer. Export types sold $63 to $74 with sales to $74.50; beef, $67.50 to $86 with sales to $89; D1 and D2, $54 to $63; D3, $45 to $52; D4, $37 to $45. Gary O’Neil of Denfield, consigned seven cows averaging 158 lbs. sold for an average of $76.40. Two charolais cows averaged 1,583 lbs. and sold for $89. Jacob D. Miller of Lucknow, consigned two cows averaging 1,445 lbs. selling for an average of $85. One gold cow weighed 1,475 lbs. and sold for $85. There were eight bulls selling $70 to $82.50; Jaime Helzle of Harriston, consigned one limousin bull weighing 2,110 lbs. selling for $82; Ronald Doerr of Formosa, consigned one charolais bull weighing 2,370 lbs. selling for $82. There were 204 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $110 to $150 with sales to $159; good holsteins, $80 to $88 with sales to $95; medium holsteins, $70 to $80; heavy holsteins, $80 to $85 with sales to $88. Premier Blues of Dublin, consigned six veal averaging 741 lbs. selling for an average of $135.88. One Belgium blue steer weighed 800 lbs. and sold for $159. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned nine veal averaging 796 lbs. selling for an average of $130.08. One limousin steer weighed 815 lbs. and sold for $154. Ervin W. Shantz of Wallenstein, consigned six veal averaging 823 lbs. selling for an average of $127.01. One limousin heifer weighed 725 lbs. and sold for $155. Lambs under 50 lbs. sold $180 to $234; 50 - 64 lbs., $169 to $225; 65 - 79 lbs., $165 to $195; 80 - 94 lbs., $145 to $162; 95 - 109 lbs., $148 to $157; 110 lbs. and over, $131 to $142. Sheep sold $40 to $70 with sales to $90. Goats: kids sold $60 to $110 with sales to $135 per head; nannies, $50 to $100 per head; billies, $150 to $250 with sales to $310 per head. Top quality stocker steers, 400 - 499 lbs. sold $142 to $176; 500 - 599 lbs., $134 to $170; 600 - 699 lbs., $128 to $153; 700 - 799 lbs., $119 to $144; 800 - 899 lbs., $118 to $147.25; 900 - 999 lbs., $109.50 to $133.75; 1,000 lbs. and over, $107 to $131.25. The Huron County Junior Farmers are ecstatic to share their successes from this past weekend. The Huron County Junior Farmers attended the Junior Farmers Association of Ontario’s March Conference, held in London this year. The banquet was held on March 9. The club was awarded the Overall Club of the Year Award for 2012. The club was chosen for its participation in local communities, membership participation, leading agriculture education, joint youth activities, conservation projects and supporting the JFAO mission statement, “ To build future rural leaders through self help and community betterment” and the year’s theme, which was, “Hooked on JF.” The club also had new member, Wade Doelman receive the Most Outstanding Novice Member of the Year for 2012. Wade was chosen for outstanding leadership and dedication in organizing and/or participating in club and provincial events, initiative in new programs and promoting Junior Farmers. The club also received several communication awards. The club received the Best Scrapbook Award for their efforts in preserving highlights of 2012 and including the theme, “Hooked on JF”. Huron County Junior Farmers won the award for the Best News Article for submitting an article that was published about what they have been up to this past year. The club also won the Best Club Photo Award for capturing club action showing community betterment which was composed of our road side clean up. The club also received the Best New Fundraising Idea Award for sharing why their ice cream stand at local events is the best. The club is very thrilled with their accomplishments and look forward to what 2013 has in store. The club is always happy to have new members join. Anyone between the ages of 15-29 is welcome to come out. The club meets once a month for meetings, and plans social and community events throughout the year.
