Central Huron Council is having a
change of heart.
Thanks to lobbying by Councillor
Brian Barnim, Central Huron
Council is choosing to meet with a
concerned group of citizens with
regard to its draft procedural bylaw
though Barnim’s original request to
hold a special meeting failed to
garner council’s support at the Feb.
19 session.“I guess that is kind of a
compromise,” says Mayor Jim Ginn.
While Barnim was absent from
the March 5 meeting, Ginn told
councillors ongoing concerns
expressed by Barnim leads him to
believe a special invitation is in
order. Councillors agreed to invite
the group to speak to the matter at
their March 12 Committee of the
Whole session.
Councillors Alison Lobb and
Marg Anderson both expressed
support for the plan. Ratepayer Bill
Stevenson, who also addressed
council at its Feb. 19 session,
commended councillors on their
willingness to communicate with
the public on the procedural bylaw,
which sets the protocol for council
meetings.

Ginn reported that Central Huron
representatives took time out to
meet with provincial leaders during
a recent Ontario Good Roads
Association and Rural Ontario
Municipalities Association
conference in Toronto. One goal was
to address ongoing issues with the
Provincial Policy Statement (PPS),
which guides municipalities in land-
related decision-making processes.
Central Huron Council is on
record as stating the PPS is in need
of reform in order to properly deal
with issues like surplus dwelling
severances, which are frowned upon
by Queen’s Park but often preferred
by rural municipalities that are eager
to keep population and assessments
within their boundaries.

team. They lost the bronze medal
game to Cornwall after starting the

victories.
Congratulations to Anna
McNichol as she celebrates her 89th
birthday on March 13. She gathered
with her family at the Queen’s Hotel
in Seaforth for a family dinner
together on March 9. Her family
includes Don, Gary, Neil, Margaret,
Ray, Jim, Dianne, Murray and Larry.
Gary was the only child not able to
attend. After the delicious dinner,
they returned to Anna’s home to
look over many of the old family
pictures. They had quite a few
laughs about how the styles, haircuts
and the overall look have changed
as the years have gone by. They
all agreed, they have changed for
the better! Happy birthday to
Anna.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Kaleigh McCallum,
Neil McDonald, William
Ringgenberg, Jerry Zwep, Allison
Braecker, Eric Ross, Fred McClure,
Carali McCall, Alex Melady, Linda
Bird, Allison Baan, Colton
Hastings,Victoria Williamson,
Joanne Black, Jo-Anne Workman,
Parker Grobbink, Lisa Gingerich,
Jim Humphries, and Ross Mitchell.
Happy birthday to all.
The UCW members of Duff’s
United Church met for a planning
meeting last week. The social
committee was in charge of the
meeting. Jo-Ann McDonald called
the meeting to order and the minutes
of the last meeting were reviewed.
The treasurer’s report was also
reviewed. Heidi McClure gave a
report on the upcoming Margaret
Trudeau event being held in April.
The two churches, Duff’s and
Bluevale United will co-ordinate
together on the light lunch to be
served.
The church is still looking for a
church member to be the archive co-
ordinator. The job entails recording
and keeping any pictures from the
paper or taking pictures at special
events for the church and UCW. A
history of the events at Duff’s
United. Occasionally, requests for
information from the history books
are asked for. Contact Karen Hoegy
if you are a history buff and would
be interested in the job.
The catering groups have four
events on the schedule at this time.
The Lenten lunch at Brussels United
Church is March 25 and Duff’s
group one will look after it. There
are two Blyth theatre dinners
scheduled for June 14 and Aug. 31.
Anniversary service is June 9 and
lunch will need to be arranged. The
motion was also made to host the
yearly turkey supper, scheduled for
Nov. 6. It will be advanced tickets
only and to prepare for 675. There
are going to be special meals
following church throughout the
coming month and hopefully more
church members will attend and
bring a guest. The first special event
is this week and is the 4-H Breakfast
Club preparing breakfast for all.
There are 14 members in the Club,
with Duff’s children Emma Baan
and Amanda Morrison involved.
Monique Baan is a leader of the
Club. Donations will be gratefully
accepted for their 4-H activities.
Marion Godkin provided a light
lunch for the eight ladies present at
the meeting.
The monthly breakfast served on
the second Sunday of the month was
held following the service at Duff’s.
Marie McGavin was in charge with
her many helpers. A good group
enjoyed the delicious fare. A special
treat will be breakfast again this
week by the 4-H kids.
