C,oloquially, the meetings were sometimes, referred to as
the "Missionary Meeting". An anecdote arising from this ap-
pellatien is told by a Sunday School teacher of a small boy.
"Who was at, Andrew?" she !asked, "The first missiOnary" he
promptly replied, "What do missionaries do?" she asked the
cklpsts. "Quilt" was the answer from -the same scholar..
But along with the prayer business and work sessions,
sometimes, when the place of meeting was at a distance, ill.-
stead of serving afternoon tee, the hostess would serve supper
to 'Which their menfolk were invited.
Apart from the women',5 Anxillary, congregational fowl
suppers and social evenings were enjoyed 'at one or the other
of the homes for many years.
' During the pastorate of the Reverend F. H, Paull and
Reverend' W. G. Bugler, there was' a flourishing A.Y.P.A.
comprising grotips from St, John's, 'Varna, St. James, Middle-
'ton, and Trinity, Hayfield,
In 1937 when 'the Reverend W. G, Bugler was Rector, the
75th Anniversary of St. John's Chervil was celebrated on Oct-
ober 31. Records show 43 attended- the communion service in
the morning, and 102 were present at night when Archdeacon
Roy D. Mess was the special speaker:"
In 1939 when the Reverend John Graham was the incum-
bent, the attendance at the 77th Anniversary service Was 140
tin the morning and 120 at Evensong. Archdeacon Wm. A.
Townsitend (now Bishop) was the special speaker.
Throughout the years, ft would be difficult to estimate
the spiritual influence Which has gone out from St. John's
Church, Varna, She gave 'two of her sons to be priests —
Reverend Henry Diehl and the Reverend Louis Diehl, of the
Diocese of Huron.
The only member now living in Varna who is a descend-
ant of a pioneer family, prominent in St. John's, is Miss E'd'ith
Beatty. She is ,treasurer; Mrs. D. AldWinekle is vestry clerk;
Adam Wilson is Rector's warden and: George Wilson is
'People's warden for 1965.
The Reverend E. C. Jennings officiated at a wedding in
St. John's Church, Varna, on July 3, 1901 when Mies Annie 3.
Beatty, daughter of Geoege Beatty and Jane Reid became the
bride of William 0. Woods, Listowel.
The last wedding in the church was that of Mary Eliza-
beth Beatty, daughter of George Beatty 'and Marie Welsh
to John. Alexander MacVicar, London, August 27, 1953. Of-
ficiating was Archdeacon Alford Abraham, assisted by. the
Rector, the Reverend E. Carew-Jones.
The last service of holy baptism held in the church was
on September 21, 1958, for Sylvia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
George Wilson. The Reverend E. J. B. Harrison; Rector, of-
fieieted.

Help For Family
Given By RCAF
Girl Guides
For the second year in a row,
the 2nd Clinton RCAF Girl
Guide Company has acted as
Santa for a needy family in the
local area. In liaison with the
Children'e Aid Society of HUI"-
on County, a large far-rely was
selected and as a result of the
girls' individual efforts a family
will have a happy .Christmas
this year.
Each patrol gave a special
gift Wrapped present to -one
member of the family and a
cash donation stow,ards the pur-
chase of that all important'

clothes, toys and canned food
was so goad 'that the assistance
of the RCAF, Clinton Mobile

obtained and their timely help
is. appreciated by the Guide
