merit to tell, .chiefly because
there once Was a Sir George
Williams. As background for
my tale, playing a part rather
like a, hamonious theme, let me
relate briefly a little of the
history of Sir George Williams
University.
It wasn't always a university.
It came into, being through edu-
cational work in ttre Montreal
YMCA and developed. into a
formal education program of
that association. Inaugurated
in 1573, unit evening courses
were held- covering vocational
and general -education subjects.
These were later co-ordinated
into the system. to' become•
known as the YMCA Schools.
By 1920, an evening high
school was convened. In 1926,
this up-until-then nameless ven-
ture was given the appropriate
title "Sir George Williams
College". It was also made co-
educational. In 1929 the college
program was 'extended to in-
clude the first year of studies
at university levels in Arts,
Science, Commerce, and pre-
Engineering, Operated ,under
the charter of the YMCA dur-
ing greatly .exp.ancling develop-
ment, Sir George William Col-
lege was finally awarded, nn
1949, its own Charter as a col-
lege or university. By sPecital
by-law however, it still operates
as the formal educational arm
of the Montreal YMCA.

expanding and endeavoring to
meet educational needs of
young men residing in a large

As if trying to understand
his own attitudes he remarked
that he has one foot in the '20s
the other in the '60s. It seems
to me he has straddled these
years quite successfully. I have
since learned he has again reg-
istered at Sir George Williams
University, this time for a
course in history. To add to his
credits 'he is writing a thesis on
the history of the ON. This
shouldn't be too hard for him
after researching facts for
since his youth he has lived
through many of the ups and
downs of this railway.
