Chiropractic Viewpoint
YOU AND YOUR SPINE
People, in general, are not aware of the importance of
their backbone, Perhaps this is because it is located be-
hind them, where they cannot readily see this part of their
Man's spine is really 'a marvelous structure, In fact
it is the keystone of the bony framework of your body,
It not only supports your head, holds your body erect, gives
attachment to the ribs, pelvis and muscles, and supports in-
ternal organs, but it serves to protect the vital spinal cord
whioh sends nerves between the spinal bones to all parts of
the body. Electrical engineers boasted when they invented
the coaxial cable, but this is a mere toy compared with the
complexity of the spinal cord with its millions of "wires"
and thousands of automatic "switches".
The spinal ' bone or vertebra is in the general
form of a signet ring and it is piled one upon
another like a stack of doughnuts to form the
spinal column and the spinal canal. The front part of
each vertebra is a heavier, thicker, rounded portion known
as the "body". Between the bodies of the upper 24 movable
vertebrae are gristle or cartilage plates known as the spinal
discs, which allow movement between the bones and act
as shock absorbers in the spinal column, Each vertebra
sits on the one next lower through a tripod arrangement
of its body and its 2 joints. Between the individual verte-
bra emerge the important spinal nerves as they branch
off from the spinal cord. The possibility of a conflict be-
tween a displaced vertebra and these vital nerve trunks,
makes the spinal column a vital factor in health and
disease.
