The Miracle Of The 4.man Body
(fl One)
There are some whodaelnytbeexistence "miracles".
Others maintain that the age of "miracles" has pessed,
The truth is, all existence is a "miracle", miracle wort.,
shops carry on daily , ,and 'hourly, within our own body,
We eat 'common food, and at once digestion .ancl
sorption begin to take place. 'From the time food enters the
mouth, a ,chemical process of digestion begins, and food is
broken clown into different elements, Some elements are
eliminated as waste or poison; other elements are filtered
refined, and transformed into body structure---muscle and
bone, hair, skin, and pails—end no mistake is made in its
distribution to where it is needed.
Consider glands. The liver, which is the largest, daily
secretes several pints of ,bile essential in process of diges-
tion. The pancreas produces pure insulin, vital in breaking
down and -utilizing blood sugar; but it does more—it sec-
retes a vital digestive -enzyme as well. Then consider spleen
and other glands, the function of which is little known, yet
they are important to health. Kidneys, with miles of
tubules, serve as a filtering .and refining plan vital to
existence. There are millions of lesser lymphatic and other
glands, all playing an important part in function and health.

PART 1
Hearing of the deeonsecration service conducted at St.
Ja.hri!s Church, Varna, Sunday afternoon, Noverribee 21, by
the Rt. Rev. H. F. G. Arppleyard, D.D., Bishop of Georg-
ian Bay, sent Lucy's' thoughts back to Pithleer Days.
She coulcfft help but feel sad that this little white frame
church of simple Gothic design with its tall spire pointing
heavenwards, would no longer be the home of a small unlit
of the Anglican communion.
Built in 1862 when the Rev. Robert James Roberts was
the incumbent, the land on which it 'stands was given by
George Beatty and his wife Jane Reid, off their farm.
What great rejoicing there must have been on the put
of the pioneers' of the church of England or Ireland when this
place was erected — doubtless with great sacrifice and labour
on the part of those hardy men and who lived close to
God!
Who would 'they have been? Besides the George Beatty
family, they probantly included the Andrew Stinson, Charles
Logan, Matthew Johnston, Thomas Johnston, James Arm-
strong, Jacob Diehl, Charles Weekes, Benjamin Higgins famil-
ies:, and possibly those of George Powell, John Boles and John
,Foster. The Jahn ,Gallaraithe and John McNaughton
Presbyterians, following union were affiliated with St. John's,
Varna.
Families listed in the parish record in 1899 were Lancelot
Beatty, John IVIcNaughton (son of 'the pioneer) Charles' and
Miss Annie Foster, John Wilson Reid, Henry Diehl, Robert
Colclough, Joseph Jacobe, Henry Galpin, Themes C. Delgaty
(Brucetield). Added to this list in subsequent years were
Thomas Stinson, Robert Morton Elliott, Robert A. and Miss
Evelyn Elliott, Charles R. Stephenson, John H. Seeley (Bruce-
field), D. A. and Miss Ada Galbraith.
In 1916, the households, with numbers indicating the
number of 'children reads as follows; Weekes, Isaac Franklin
and Rachael; Logan, William and Miss Euphernia; McNa.ugh-
ton, John and Lillian (3); Reid, John Wilson and Margaret
Ann (2); Diehl, Henry and Margaret Jane (3); Colcough,
Robert and Harriett (1); Colclough, Wm. John and Harriett
L. (5); Beatty, Lancelot and Elie:a:bath (4) ;i Elliott, Robert,
Morton and Bertha Lillian (4); Elliott, Robert and Miss
Evelyn; Stinson Thomas and Ms, Stinson (4); D. A. and
Miss Ada Galbraith;, Beatty, John. and Mrs. Beatty, George
Beatty and Miss Edith IVIassop; Weekes, Mrs, Roxanna;
Albert Johns and John Johns; Woolley,, Arthur and Ruth (3).
In a rearrangement of the Parish, St. Luke's Church,
Goshen was. closed and St. James' Church, Middleton, added
in 1922.
Members. of St. Luke's who became associated with St.
Chiureh included Arthur (McClinchey, Miss Frances
Sharp, Henry Hayiter, James Stephenson and later the Joseph
IVIossop
Old families haVe died out and, others have moved away;
new families have come and gone; .and Whets .have drifted
from' the church in the last half century. But memory ever
takes.. one back 'to happy days as illUstrated by the fact that
in 1964 on their 49th wedding anniversary; Mr, and Mrs. Guy
Stanley Freeland (the former Ethel Mae Johns), Toronto,
who were' married July 28, 1915 came to St. John's and stayed
for Evensong with the Rector, the Reverend E. J. )3. Harrison.
In 1915 there were 14 families comprising 52 souls with
'an average attend'an'ce 43; five Sunday School teachers., 18
scholars with an 'average attendance, of 13. And in 1898, the
Rev. Sylvester L. Smith presented 18 at St. John's Church
Varna for confirmation by Bishop Baldwin — all from that
congregation.
:Maas. Charles Marks (a daughter of John Galbraith) when
asked who were the earliest organists she remembered, re-
plied: "My sister Mary 'and Rachel Beatty."
Carl and his sister Enna remember also that Miss. Lottie
Weekes and MiSs Charlotte Cook (Wileon Cook owned the
hotel oh the southwest corner in Varna) played the organ.
Others who gave fine leadership to the song of praise in this
Way over the years included, Mrs. John McNaughton, Mrs.
Lancelot Beatty and Mrs. Edwin Chuter.
Lucy has very happy Memories of St. John'e Church,
• Varna, and the Warm Fellowship of the congregation.
She helped out ih the their with others from Trinity on
special occasions and their dhoir members returned the coin-
pliment. Choir members recalled were. William Logan, Edwin,
liuter, It Elliott, George Beatty, Rachel Beatty, Edith
Galbraith, Erma and Fanny Diehl, Mrs. Taek Smith.
The interior of the church reflected the 'bare 'Puritan in,
Masten, Ada Galbraith, Enna and Fanny Diehl, Mrs. Jack
Smith.
