A SPECIAL MESSAGE TO CUSTOMERS. OF THE EV OF M
What "My Bank"
did with your
dollars in 1965
Kenneth Flett, Manager
Clinton Branch
Bank of Montreal
They were active dollars, those savings dollars you
placed in the keeping of the Bank of Montreal in
1965. As manager of the local branch of "My Bank",
I would Iike to take a few moments to fill you in
briefly on the use that the Bank made of them.
Every dollar you saved during, the past year was
put right to work helping people directly or in-
directly. Many of those dollars were used to aid
people in financing things that meant an improved
way of life for them such things as cars, home
improvements, household appliances of all kinds.
Another substantial number was lent to small,
medium and large business enterprises, encouraging
them to expand and employ more people_
The personal savings of people like yourself
amounted to very nearly one-half of the total de-
posits of $4,605,387,144 at the Rank's year-end on
October 31st. This figure represents a record high
for deposits in our 148 years of operations and in
turn permitted us to record a new all-time high in
total loans of $3,167, 990, 306.
Another $811,767,061 was invested in high-grade
government bonds which have a ready market, plus
$163,541,999 in other securities—mainly short-term
credits to industry,
What else did your hard working dollars do in
1965? Well, they breathed new vitality into vir-
tually every community across our nation, They
financed new industry and created new jobs . .
helped farmers improve both their farms and their
way of living . , constructed new schools and
helped students get a better education ... aided
fi'shermen to increase their catches and their in-
comes . built new roads and highways . . sup-
ported community, projects, large and small, of
many kinds,
Yes, your savings dollars worked hard in 1965 —
and hardest of all for you, For, steadily accumulat-
ing at interest, they are a sound investment in a
better future for yourself and your family.
On behalf of the Bank of Montreal, may I Say
"thank you" for your confidence in '.`My Bank" and
for the opportunity ybu are giving us to work with
you in building a more prosperous Canada,

It was our opinion that the

trOrerSY Over School probleMS
bas heralded the local PaPPMt
While Ives and cons on both
sides have _at least kept the
interest at a, point of 14n:forget-
aKtity, we now find ourselves
facing an ;election, Who is right
and where do we go from here?
At the ,Stanley %wnship nom-
lnatitrn Meeting 'the .school iin-
spector made the _statement
that in. the very near future,
we would find .ourselves' 'under
compulsory Jurisdiction to send
our children to kindergarten.
As if that were not. enough, he
went on to acid that plans in
the department were to start,
children into a. junior or Pre-
kindergarten at the early age
of three and one-half years,.
Toronto is presently taking
steps in this direction,
am asking, "How long can
we .remain silent to this die-
tation from the department in
terms' of our education?" As
we know in the next feW years
we und.oubtedly' see our .as-
sessment rise to the tune of
200% -ate- mainly to the :fact
oin' present asset SMent as based
On 'the Property values of the
.early fortys.
Where are MO taxes, 'ping_
to be terminated? The Inspector
wont en. to educational
:trends were to large -central-
ized schools and that .shortly
the smaller schools woolci find
no place in our 'sysitein,
would like to inform him
that smaller schools .serve
us. well and ,continue to sin so if
we allow them 'to. In the .sep-
arate system we find
many four and six room schools.,
being built with just as high
and often _higher portion lof
grants being reeeived than we
do in our Sell'OOls system.
Therefore on the be,sis
grants the inspector'S argu-
ment on this matter fis defeated.
He also agreed that 'bussing
is tiresome to small children,
What te'tlin. would be use to
describe the fatigue expexienc,
ed by three and' orie, lialf year
aids- riding our school buses?.
To the parent this means much
inconvenience as kindergarten
is only a half day affair, This
means we would find ourselves.
obligated to be present every.
noon at the schOol to take
.children either to or from sch,
aol, This would impose heavily
on the farmer who; in the midst
of many demanding duties of
the, farm, would be obliged to
meet this responsibility..
We all know, education is es,
sential and that times do
change, However let's also re-
member that the Winn child is
still a small child and that he
or she deserves our careful
thought and consideration.
Let us berealistic about this
qUestion of education, using
common. sense — if need be
perhaps rejecting these so call-
ed educators and their philoso-
phy on education — and per-
haps we can come together on
a mutual agreement as to what
is best for our children and our
pocketbook.
