no Theans..exhattsthie; yet we
sometimes found over 30c
difference in the prices of
the same brand and size of
toothpaste. And although the
price for an ounce of a par-
ticular brand was usually
lower the larger the size of
the tube, this was not invar-
iably true, as the table shows,
If, you are not fussy about
WhiCh brand you use, We
found that you can buy en
ounce of toothpaste for as
little ..as 9c (fAsterine' in. a 5
oz. tube) and for as much as
29c (Stripe in a 41 gm. tube).
We weren't looking . for
'bargains' when we bought
our test samples, but we.
couldn't avoid them. Bauid-
ages and toothbrushes and
gift coupons and innumerable
'specials'. One bargain. :ap-
peared to have made even
the retailer give up — he ,
,charged 52c for an 82 gm.
size of Colgate Fluoride which
was labelled '59c special' and
had a 7c coupon to be used
on the next purchase.
CAC has long campaigned
against 'cents off' claims. The
question is 'cents off what?'
The manufacturers have no
right to establish retail pric-
es and therefore their 'cents
off' labels are misleading.
Such claims also often prove
to be meaningless in terms
of the actual prices charged
by the retailers, Colgate in
the 238 gram size cost our
shopper in Toronto 98c, our
Vancouver shopper 92c; both
tubes were labelled '25c off'.
At the same time, our shop-
per in Montreal paid 81.19,
for the same brand and size
labelled '20c off'.
And then there was the
shopper's nightmare—CoIgate
again. Of two otherwise
identical cartons, 55c was the
price marked on the one lab-
elled '8c off' while 57c was
the price on the one labelled
'10c off,' * *
`. . I just 'haven't the
time to figure out all these
sizes and prices, Besides, I
can't even read a few of
them, the print is so small
and the marked prices are so
smudgy. I'm just going to
ask my 'dentist if camphorat-
ed chalk, or baking soda, or
something cheap and sensible
like that isn't as good . ."

The Other 'Vehicle Gtr' Away
This sight greeted James Cruickshank of RR 2 Clinton when he returned
to his car last. Wednesday evening. He had parked it on the north shoulder
of Highway 8, about two miles east of Clinton and returned to it about 7:30
p.m. Ontario Provincial Police from the Goclerich Detachment said they are
continuing their investigation to find the driver of whatever vehicle destroyed
the Cruickshank car and failed to remain at the scene.
