The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1937-12-23, Page 2'liHCRSDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1937 THE EXETER TIMES-ADVOCATE HE AV AS A DITCH BOY Christmas was celebrated long be fore Santa 'Claus was ever thought of. His prototype was the Dutch boy bishop, St. Nicholas, who on December *5th used to go around and -punish little children who did not say their prayers and rewarding those who did. Gradually he was changed from a boy into a jovial man, while the sled and reindeer are modern additions. Actually, San ta Clans was unknown in England a hundred years ago. The Dutch founders of New York introduced him to America, and England' bor rowed him from the States.—Lon don Tit-Bits Magazine. Odd Beliefs at Christinas Akhougih Christmas is celebrated in much the same manner all over the world, different countries have certain customs peculiar to them- „,. lves. Germany is one that has the greatest number of these perhaps, for German children regar4 Christ mas Day with far more reverence than do those of any other nation. It was from Germany that the Christmas tree, laden with gifts, was first introduced. The idea, how ever, is really of Roman origin. : A firm belief among German chil dren is that on December 25 th, ani mals have the gift of speech for 24 hours, Their inability to under stand what they say is due, so theii parents tell them, to the fact that they have misbehaved during some portion of the previous 12 months. In Norway there is a pretty cus tom of providing a good dinnei' on Christmas Day for all domestic ani mals. The farmers give their horses and cows an extra supply of fod der while sheaves of corn and <ilsh.es of grain are put out in the yard for the benefit of the 'birds. •One of the commonest, as well as one of the oldest, practices still as- ■Of Pt al- had that was that the pre- !•======•“=■ sociated with the observation Christmas in England is burning a “Yule” log. it ways lighted from a brand been carefully saved from vious years’ log. The word “Yule" it is interesting to note, is derived Lorn an old Anglo-Saxon on.e mean ing December. There are many curious beliefs and superstitions associated in dif ferent parts of iGreat Britain with Christmas. One that is obtained in Devonshire is that a -bright sun on December 25th means a good apple crop , . . In Yorkshire there is a strong feeling against being married on -Christmas Day ■ . . The villag- ers in remote parts of AVprchester- sbire consider it very unlucky to have new shoes or boots in their houses any time between Dec ember 8 and. 25 ... In certain parts oi Scotland there is a fixed belief that the first member of tihe family to open the door of a house on Christ mas morning will have more luck during the next 12 months than anybody else in the (house. If it does no other good the superstition is, at rising year. any rate, 'conducive to early on at least one day of the Renew Now! NEAR THEIR DESTINATION Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Sparl ing, who are now on their way back to their work in West China, have •been having a pleasant voyage across the Pacitic. They reached Honolulu on December 2. The C.P.R. steamer will not stop at Shanghai as usual on account of war conditions but will proceed to Honk-Kong, From there the Sparlings will go on thro' Jndo-China and northward to the Province of Cze Chuan by train and bus.
