At the St. Paul’s Anglican church Rev. Mr. Farr delivered very inter­ esting sermons at bot'h services. The many friends of Mr. Charles Jinks will be sorry to hear he is con­ fined to his home through illness. Miss Verda Watson and Gladys Passmore spent the week-end with the former’s parents, at Londesboro. Mrs. J. B. McLean has returned home after several weeks’ visit with her son and other relatives in Chi­ cago. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Beavers and little daughter Norma, of Farquhar, visited a day last week with rela­ tives here. Mrs. (Dr.) Reid left Friday for her home in Port Rowan after tending the funeral of her fa’ther the late Edward Sheffer. She was accompanied home by ‘her mother who will visit her for some time. S. of Carmel Presby­ terian Church held their first meet­ ing of the new year on Thursday, January 9th at three o’clock in the school room of the church with a good attendance when The Presby­ terian Women’s Day of Prayer was observed. The meeting opened by the call to worship by the president, Mrs. Hudson, followed by a few minutes silent prayer and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. A hymn was then sung, Mrs. Jas. A. Bell then read the Bible lesson from John 1:1-14, followed .by prayers by Mrs. Young, Miss McGregor and. Mrs. Workman. Mrs. Hudson read a paper on “Our resources in God’s word.” Verses were then read by different members A hymn was sung. Mrs. Parkis and Mrs. Dallas led in prayer when an­ other group of Bible verses were read Dorothy Daters sang a beautiful so­ lo. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The business period was taken by the president. Mrs. Young gave a most excellent address on “The Open Door.” Mrs. Jas. Paterson, gave an appropriate solo andi the meet­ ing closed with a hymn and the bene­ diction. Member Honored The W. A. of the St. PaUls Angli­ can Church held their regular monthly meeting in t'he schoolroom of the church oh Thursday afternoon there was a good attendance of mem­ bers. It being the 43rd anniversary of the society. A very interesting feature of the meeting was an ad­ dress and presentation of a beautiful silver bowl filled with roses to Mts. G. C. Shower for Bride On Friday eventalg, January 10th, the Young Ladies Class of the Sun­ day School met at the home of Mrs. Oscar Pfaff and in honor of the re­ cent bride, Mrs. Oscar Brine, (nee Pearl Brethour) presented her with a liovely cream and green granite shower. Pearl thanked the girls in a few well chosen words. The ev­ ening was spent' in various' amuse­ ments. Lunch was served -by the girls of the class. Presentation On Friday evening last the Young Me/nfs Class of Woodham Sunday Slchool assembled at the parsonage to do honour to. the newly-wed mem­ ber of the class, Mr. Oscar Brine, and presented him with a nice clock. The address was read by John Tom­ linson and Fred Jaminson made the presentation. We regret to reiport that Mr. Wm. Finkbeiner is confined^ to his home with an infection in his foot. We hope he will soon be improved. Dr. .Misener, Medical Officer of Health, has had an analyses made of a sample of water taken from the school well and the report received from the Department of Health in London, states the water to be in Class “A”, which means the water is of excellent quality. The interest did not wane when an excellent lunch was served at midnight. Crediton Women’s Institute A regular meeting of the W. I. was held in the hall, January'"’'7 th with a good crowd present. Four new members were added to the roll. The president in charge, opened the meeting by singing the “Ode” and repeating t'he Lord’s prayer in uni­ son. .Roll call was answered, by tel­ ling a humorous story. Motto, “The best days of a woman’s life are those in which she renders service,” A-: number of letters of appreciation were read from those who received boxes at Christmas. It was decided to have oui* annual social evening and) entertain t'he husbands and friends on January 21st. Mrs. J. W. Johnson! took the chair for the fol­ lowing program: song, New Years reading by Mrs. T. Mawliinney; piano solo by Mrs. E. Lawson; cur­ rent events were given by Mrs. H. K. Eilber; vocal duett by1 Mrs. F. W. Clark and Mrs. Woodall; a paper on Home Economics was given by Mrs: W. Oestreicher. Following this Mrs. Irwin Finkbeinei* (recent bride) was presented with a handsome table­ cloth. Mrs. C. Misener read t’he ad­ dress and Mrs. Ewald made the pre­ sentation. Mrs. Finkbeiner in a few well chosen words thanked the ladies for their gift. A dainty lunch was served and a social time spent, a vote of thanks was tendered the hostess and to all who took part in the program. Mother Dies Mrs. M. W. Telfer, of Crediton, was called1 to Wingham recently ow­ ing to the serious illness of her mother Mrs. Charles Albert Rintoul, who passed away on Sunday, Janu­ ary^ th. Mrs. Rintoul was ill only a few days with pneumonia. Deceas­ ed was in her 73 rd year and was a lifelong resident of that Community. Her husband predeceased her in 1928. Surviving are four daugh­ ters and one sori, Mrs. Fred L. Mac- Lean, and Alex, of Wingham; Mrs. M. W. Telfer, of Crediton; Mrs. Har­ old Ross, of Detroit and Mrs. Fred Staples, Stevensville. She is also survived by one brother, John Shiell, of West Wawanosh and nine grand­ children. The funeral was held from the home of her daughter Mrs. Mac- Lean followed by a service in the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church., of which the deceased was a member, Rev. Mrs. Arthur McFalls, the president, opened the meeting with hymn 293 and prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. The annual re­ ports for 1935 were read amd show­ ed that our society had a very suc­ cessful year. Mrs. Powe gave a read­ ing on “How our Missionaries would suffer if funds were withheld.” It was decided that oui* society would work together* this year and plans for an oyster supper were made, the supper to be served on St. Valen­ tine^ night,, February 14th. The meeting was closed with hymn* 288 and Mrs. L. Hicks pronounced the benediction after which Mrs. Isaac served lunch. Women's Association The January Meeting of the Wo­ mans’ Association was held in the schoolroom of the church on Thurs­ day afternoon, January 9th with 25 members present. Mrs. Al. McFalls was in the chair for .the devotional exercises. The meeting was opened by the use of hymn 25 5 aftei* which the leader led in prayer. The Scrip­ ture lesson was read by Mrs. Tom. Emillie. The president, Mrs. L. Hodgsonl then took the chair for the business and the reception of annual reports. The reports showed that the association, had a very successful year. The Association divided in two groups for the .purpose of making money, the money to be handed in at the April meeting. Mrs. Andrew Isaac was appointed convenor of Group 1. This group will hold a sup- pei* and) program in the basement of the church on Friday plight of this week. Mr. W. J. Brown amid Mr. Elton Curts secured a piece of woodland in the swamp last Friday and are planning for several bees to bring it to the United Church. Every one will be welcome. Several others in community bought timber rights same day. Miss Lois Browni is spending a weeks in London. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family of the late Mrs. John Grieve (nee Caroline Wilson) who was buried in Park­ hill on Saturday. Mrs. Grieve was bornl and spent her girlhood and the early years of her married life here and many life-long friends will re­ gret her passing. The Harmony Glass held a very successful meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd, Brophey Friday evening. The president, L. Carmel was the scene of a pretty wedding when Madeline 'Coughlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Coughlin was united in marriage to James Dalton, son of James Dalton, of Goderich, Fr. Murry, of Toron­ to, uncle of the bride, officiated and also celebrated nuptial mass. The bride was given) in marriage by her father and looked charming in a gown of white satin with wreath and veil, white pumps and other matfeh- ing accessories. .She carried a white prayer book with streamers. She' was attended by hei* sister Miss Helen Coughlin gowned ini pink crepe silk and wore small black hat, black pumps and carried a white prayer book. .Dinnis Doyle, of London, was the groomsman. During the signing of the register Mr. James Dalton, father of the groom sang an approp­ riate solo. The meet­ ing opened with the new president, Miss Evelyn Hunkin in the chair. We sang hymn 356 followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approv­ ed. The treasurer’s report was then read followed by the roll call, the response being a New Year’s resolu­tion. After the business was dis­ cussed hymn 252 was sung. Miss B. Ballantyne then took charge of the meeting. Hymn 502 was sung fol­ lowed by the Scripture and prayer by Miss Vera Pollen. Miss Mary Gardiner and Miss Beth Ballantyne sang a duet; Mrs. Mair gave a read­ ing on people in Africa; Miss Evelyn Hunkin then favored us with an in­ strumental. Hymn 501 was sung fol­ lowed by the Mizpah benediction. A jolllyi half hour was spent over the tea cups. A very enjoyable evening was spent by the choir at the home of Mr, and Mrs. John Hodgert on Wed­ nesday, when after preparation for Sunday they joined their husbands in a social time. A delightful lunch Was served and appreciated. Before leaving Mr, Moodie tendered a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hodgert In which all participat­ ed for their hospitality. Mr. A. Campbell, of Exeter, was a visitor for a day or two with 1'iis old neighbors the past week. SHJPKA The regular meeting of the Ladies’ Aid was held Wednesday, January 8 at the home of Mrs. Albert Gaiser, eleven members being present. The meeting was opened by the president Mrs. A. Gaiser followed by a hymn and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. The Scripture lesson, 90 Psalm was read by Miss P. Keyes and the' minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. The remainder of the afternoon was spent in quilting. Miss Louise Ball from London is spending a few weeks at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Sweitzer Miss Elsie Finkbeiner, of Dunn- ville, spent a few days with relatives here. Mr. Arthur Webb spent Sunday in Leamington, Mrs. Webb and family returned home with them, Mr. Matt, filweitzer visited with relatives in Melbourne Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Baynham and t family from Centralia visited with r relatives here on Sunday. The annual congregational meet­ ing was held Tuesday, January 14, at the United church. Rev. Mr. Johnston presided. The meeting opened with hymn, prayer and Scripture lesson read by Mr. John­ ston. Reports were given by the various organizations showing them to be in a splendid condition. The Ladies’ Aid Society showed a bal­ ance on hand of $91.i51. Election of officers took place as follows: Elders Ernest Keys and Geo. Scott; Stew­ ard's, Milton Ratz, Wm. Lovie, Verne Sharp and Albert Keys; Organist, Miss Pearl Keys, assistant, Mrs. M. Ratz; M. and M. Treas., Miss Pearl Keys; ushers, Milton Ratz, Verne Sharp; Auditors, Mrs. Milton Ratz and Verne Sharp. The meeting closed in the usual way. Miss V. Adams is in Exeter where she intends to remain for a time. ZION Society Harold the 9th. The Women’s Missionary met at the ‘home of Mrs. Hern on Thursday, January Our new president Mrs. R. E. Pooley was in charge of the meeting which ■> opened by singing ’‘More" Love, O Christ to Thee” followed by repeat­ ing the Lord’s prayer ital unison. The minutes of the last meeting were read and the roll called with eight members present. The reports of 1935 were read. It was decided to make the quilts as usual. A letter was read from Mrs. Thos. Morley, thanking the auxiliary for the box of fruit sent her. The devotional leaflet was read by Mrs. Warren Brock. A committee was put in to decide on getting up a play or coim- cert. Hymn “When I Walk) in God’s Clear Sunlight” was sung. Prayer by several of the members. The first chapter of the study book “A New Africa” was taken by Mrs. R. E. Poolley. A few short readings were given by several members. Mrs. W. J. Brock, invited the Auxiliary to her home for the February meeting. We then sa(n|g “I Love to Tell the Story” Mrs. Pooley closed the meeting with prayer and the benediction. There was no preaching service on Sunday on account of the illness of the pastor Rev. Mr. Peters. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Jaques visited in Exieter with the latter’s mother Mrs. A. Gunning during, the past week.
